EDD PFL denied - claim they never received maternity leave docs I submitted twice
I'm beyond frustrated with EDD right now! I submitted all my maternity leave paperwork for PFL baby bonding after my pregnancy disability ended in March. They claimed they never received my doctor's certification (which I definitely sent), so they scheduled a phone interview to resolve it. Well, guess what? They NEVER called at the scheduled time last Tuesday. Today I got a letter dated just 2 days after the missed interview saying I'm DENIED for all baby bonding benefits because I "didn't provide requested documentation" - over $7,200 that I was counting on! The appeal form was included, but this feels so unfair. They made their decision without even doing the interview they scheduled! Has anyone gone through this exact situation with PFL? Did appealing actually work?

omg this exact thing happened to me!!! they scheduled an interview about my pregancy disability transitioning to baby bonding, never called, then denied everything saying i didnt submit docs (i did twice!!). its like they dont even look at what u send them. i filed the appeal and sent COPIES of everything again with proof of when i sent it the first time. took like 6 weeks but they reversed it and i got paid. document EVERYTHING including when u mail stuff and take screenshots of confirmations!!

•Thank you so much for sharing! Did you just use the appeal form they sent or did you have to do anything special? I'm worried about waiting 6 weeks with no income since I'm still on unpaid leave. This is so stressful with a newborn!

This is unfortunately a common issue with EDD PFL claims. The system doesn't always properly document receipt of paperwork, especially during the transition from Pregnancy Disability to Baby Bonding PFL. Here's what you need to do: 1. File the appeal immediately - don't wait 2. Include copies of ALL documentation again 3. If you submitted online, include screenshots of confirmation pages 4. If you mailed documents, include proof of mailing 5. Write a detailed cover letter explaining timeline of submissions 6. Request expedited processing due to financial hardship The appeal process typically takes 4-8 weeks, but documenting financial hardship can sometimes speed it up. Make sure all your documentation has your EDD Customer Account Number and claim ID clearly visible on every page.

•Thank you for the detailed steps! I submitted everything through their online portal and thankfully took screenshots of the confirmation pages. I'll definitely include those with the appeal. Is there a specific way to request expedited processing? I don't see that option on the appeal form.

I had to appeal a PFL denial last year when transitioning from SDI pregnancy disability to baby bonding. The key is documenting EVERYTHING. When I submitted my appeal, I included: - Appeal form completely filled out - A timeline of all communications with EDD - Screenshots of online submissions - Copies of all forms I had submitted - Doctor certification forms (again) - Birth certificate copy - Cover letter explaining the situation My appeal was approved and I got full backpay. But here's the most important part - I kept calling EDD regularly to check status. Getting through to a human is nearly impossible though.

•Have you tried using Claimyr to get through to EDD? I was in the same boat last month - couldn't get through for days about my maternity leave to baby bonding transition issues. Someone here recommended it, and I was connected to an EDD agent in like 15 minutes instead of waiting for hours or getting disconnected. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM?si=6N1iCQ3a8Cdb2Ay5 and their site is claimyr.com. Totally worth it when you're dealing with time-sensitive stuff like appeals.

the SAME exact thing happened to my wife after our baby was born!!!! the EDD is totally broken. they say they never got paperowrk, but never tell u theres a problem until they deny you. we sent the appeal w/ ALL documentation plus proof we sent it orginally. took for ever (8 weeks!) but they finally fixed it. meanwhile we had NO INCOME and had to borrow from my parents!!!!!! call them everyday but u probly wont get thru. DISGUSTING how they treat new parents!!!

•8 weeks?? That's terrifying. We can't go that long without income. Did you do anything special to speed up your appeal? This is so stressful on top of having a newborn.

Ugh this is such a common EDD issue. When I was on maternity leave, they claimed they never got my doctor's certification too. But I requested a supervisor when I finally got through on the phone (took 3 days of calling) and they found my documents in their system! Sometimes the documents get uploaded but not properly attached to your claim. Don't just accept the denial - keep fighting it.

•This is excellent advice. I've seen many PFL claims get denied due to documentation issues that were actually EDD's fault. If you filed electronically, specifically mention in your appeal that you believe the documents were received but not properly processed. Request they search their document management system using your EDD Customer Account Number. Also, make sure all the dates on your documentation are correct - they're very strict about ensuring the doctor's certification dates match the period you're claiming for baby bonding. Double-check that your baby bonding period doesn't overlap with your pregnancy disability period, as that's another common reason for denial.

Try calling the dedicated PFL number (not the regular EDD number) right when they open at 8:00 AM. Sometimes you can get through faster. When I had issues with my baby bonding claim, I was able to reach someone who actually looked up my file and saw that my documents were there but not properly indexed. They fixed it on the spot! The appeal is good to file just in case, but talking to a live person might resolve it faster.

•I've tried that number every day this week with no luck! It's either busy signals or getting disconnected after 45+ minutes on hold. I'll keep trying though. Is there any trick to getting through to an actual person?

if ur desperate, try calling right at 8 am and also try right after lunch around 1-1:30. sometimes they answer then!!! also, did u try the online messaging system through ur EDD account? sometimes they actually respond to those! just keep sending them messages every day!!! they might actually look at ur file and fix it without an appeal. thats what finally worked for me!

•I've been trying the online messaging system too! So far no responses after 3 messages. I'll try the 1:30 after lunch trick tomorrow - I've been focusing on early morning. Thanks for the tips!

Based on what you've shared, this seems like a classic case of documents being received but not properly indexed in their system. While pursuing the appeal is necessary to protect your rights, you should also: 1. Send a written request through the online portal specifically asking for a "Document Search" of your Customer Account Number 2. Include the exact dates you submitted documentation previously 3. Reference that a phone interview was scheduled but never occurred 4. Request immediate reconsideration based on their failure to conduct the scheduled interview If you can get through by phone, specifically request to speak with a "Claim Specialist" rather than a regular representative. Regular reps often can't see all documentation in the system.

•This is incredibly helpful! I didn't know about requesting a "Document Search" or asking for a "Claim Specialist" - I'll definitely try both approaches. I'm going to send that message right now through the portal with all the details you suggested. Fingers crossed this works!

I'm going through something very similar right now! Filed for PFL baby bonding after my pregnancy disability ended, they claimed my doctor's forms were never received (I have confirmation screenshots), and then they scheduled a phone interview that never happened. Got denied two days later. What's really frustrating is that I called their customer service line over 20 times trying to get through before the denial letter came, and either got busy signals or was disconnected after waiting on hold for hours. It feels like they're setting us up to fail. I'm filing the appeal this week with all my documentation again, plus the screenshots showing I submitted everything properly. Reading everyone's experiences here gives me hope that the appeal process might actually work, even though it's going to be a long wait without income. Has anyone had success getting temporary financial assistance while waiting for an appeal? This timing with a newborn is just brutal.
