EDD PFL: How to switch from disability to Paid Family Leave claim & get refund?
Hey everyone, I'm having some trouble with my Paid Family Leave claim. I initially filed for disability, but it turns out I needed PFL instead. Has anyone else had to switch between these two? How did you handle it? I'm worried about getting a refund for the disability application and making sure my PFL claim goes through smoothly. Any advice would be really appreciated!

Ugh, been there done that. The whole system is a mess. I had to switch from disability to PFL too and it was a nightmare. Took me weeks to get it sorted out. Good luck!

Same here! It's like they purposely make it confusing. I swear, you need a law degree just to fill out these forms correctly.

I found a way to actually get someone on the phone! I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/DOLxZQb92wM

Sounds too good to be true. Does it really work? $20 seems steep just to make a phone call.

I was skeptical too, but it actually worked for me. Saved me hours of hold time. Worth it IMO.

Interesting. How long did you have to wait before they connected you?

It took about 45 minutes, but I didn't have to sit there listening to hold music. They just called me when an agent was on the line.

Here's what you need to do: 1. Contact EDD immediately. Explain your situation and request a change from disability to PFL. 2. Ask about the refund process for your disability application. They should be able to guide you. 3. Submit a new PFL claim ASAP. Don't wait for the refund to process. 4. Keep all documentation related to both claims. 5. Follow up regularly. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. 6. If you're having trouble reaching someone, try calling right when they open or just before closing. 7. Consider using the online portal for faster communication. Remember, persistence is key. Don't give up!

This is solid advice. I'd add: make sure to note down the name of every person you talk to and the date/time. It can help if there are any discrepancies later.

have you tried reaching out to your local assemblymember or state senator? sometimes they can help cut through the red tape

OMG the EDD is such a joke. I swear they make everything 10x more complicated than it needs to be. WHY CAN'T THEY JUST HAVE A SIMPLE SYSTEM THAT WORKS?!?! 😤😤😤

Quick question - how long ago did you file the disability claim? There might be a time limit for changing it to PFL.

I filed it about a week ago. Do you know what the time limit is?

I think you should be okay then. IIRC, you have 30 days to make changes. But double-check on the EDD website to be sure!

Pro tip: document EVERYTHING. Every call, every letter, every email. You never know when you'll need to prove you did something or someone told you something. Trust me, it'll save you a headache down the road.
