EDD Backpay stopped after 2 payments - postpartum disability claim issues
I finally filed for disability backpay for my postpartum period after putting it off way too long. Had my baby in November and then she needed unexpected surgery, so dealing with disability paperwork was the last thing on my mind! At my 6-month follow-up in May, my doctor helped me file for retroactive disability benefits. I got two payments within a couple weeks (the first on June 12 and second on June 26), but nothing since then. It's been over a month with no additional payments or updates on my claim status. The EDD website just shows the last payment date with no explanation. Should I be worried? Has anyone experienced payment gaps like this with retroactive claims? I'm starting to stress because I was counting on this money to catch up on bills from when I was out of work.

•I've tried calling like 15 times but can never get through! It just disconnects me after the automated message about high call volume. Do you know if there's a better time of day to call?

The EXACT same thing happened to me back in January!! My backpay for pregnancy disability started coming and then BOOM just stopped after 2 payments. I was freaking out!!! Turns out they were doing an "eligibility review" or whatever they call it for retroactive claims. No one bothered to tell me until I finally got through to someone after calling for DAYS. They ended up sending the rest of my payments about 3 weeks later, but I almost had a heart attack waiting. The system is soooo broken!!!!

•That's actually really reassuring to hear it might just be a review. Did you have to provide any additional documentation during that 3 week waiting period? Or did they just suddenly start paying you again?

•Nope, they didn't ask for ANYTHING else from me! Just randomly started payments again. The lady I finally talked to said something about how retroactive claims automatically get flagged for review after initial payments. Super frustrating they don't tell us this!!!

This is fairly common with retroactive disability claims, especially for pregnancy/postpartum situations. EDD typically processes the first couple of payments to provide immediate financial relief, then conducts a more thorough review of the claim before releasing the remaining backpay amounts. A few things to check: 1. Log into your SDI Online account and check for any correspondence or requests for additional information in your inbox 2. Verify that your doctor submitted all required medical certification forms (DE 2501) for the entire retroactive period 3. Make sure your retroactive claim dates don't overlap with any employment periods where you received wages The review process typically takes 2-4 weeks but can be longer during busy periods. If you haven't received any updates by mid-August, I would recommend actively trying to reach an EDD representative.

•Thank you for such a detailed response! I checked my SDI Online account and there aren't any messages or requests. My doctor definitely certified the whole period (from November through April). I didn't return to work until May 1st, so there shouldn't be any overlap. I guess I just need to be patient, but it's so stressful not knowing when the rest might come.

wait i'm confused... are u talking about SDI or PFL? cuz those are different things. SDI is for when YOU are disabled (like recovering from childbirth) but PFL is for bonding with baby. did u file for both? they have different timelines and stuff

•Good point about the different programs. For clarity, postpartum recovery typically falls under SDI (State Disability Insurance) for approximately 6-8 weeks after delivery, depending on delivery type. After that period, parents can transition to PFL (Paid Family Leave) for bonding time. Since the original poster mentioned retroactive benefits from November to April after her 6-month checkup, this sounds like a combination claim that might include both programs, which could explain part of the processing complexity.

I've seen this happen frequently with retroactive claims that combine SDI and PFL. The system processes them differently, and there's often a pause between the initial payments and the remainder while they conduct verification reviews. Based on my experience helping others with similar situations, here's what might help: - Double-check that your claim spans are accurate in the system (SDI for the 8-week recovery, then PFL for the bonding period) - Verify the "last day worked" on your claim matches your employment records - Look for any certification gaps that might be holding up specific weeks of payment If everything looks correct, the remaining payments should resume once their review is complete. The fact that you received initial payments is actually a good sign - it means your claim was initially approved and just needs to complete the verification process.

•this makes sense! i remember now when i did my pregnancy stuff last year there was like a weird gap between when the recovery payments (SDI) stopped and the bonding (PFL) started. nobody told me that would happen and i freaked out!

Have you tried using Claimyr to get through to EDD? I was in a similar situation with my backpay (though for a different medical condition) and couldn't get answers for WEEKS. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and they got me connected to an actual EDD representative in about 20 minutes. There's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd The rep I spoke with was able to tell me exactly why my payments had stopped (they needed one additional form from my doctor) and helped me resolve it right away. Saved me weeks of stress and uncertainty.

•I've never heard of Claimyr before! That sounds amazing compared to the endless busy signals I've been getting. I'll definitely check out that video. At this point, I just need to talk to a real person who can tell me what's going on with my claim.

I want to add something important about retroactive disability claims that might explain your situation. When you file retroactively like you did, EDD often sends the first couple payments quickly to provide immediate relief, but then they have a mandatory review process for the remaining backpay amounts. This review is more common with claims that span both SDI and PFL programs. In my experience working with many disability claimants, these reviews typically take 3-4 weeks to complete. The system doesn't communicate this well, so many people get worried when payments suddenly stop. As long as your doctor properly certified your disability period and you haven't received any notices requesting additional information, your remaining payments should resume after their review is complete. One thing that might help: when you check your claim status online, look at the "claim effective period" dates to make sure they cover your entire expected backpay timeframe. If those dates look correct, it's likely just in the review queue.

•Thank you for this explanation - it's really helpful! I just checked my claim effective dates and they do show the entire period (November 15, 2024 through April 30, 2025), so that's reassuring. I guess I'll try to be patient for another week or so before really panicking.

The EDD is ALWAYS doing this!!! They start paying people and then randomly stop with NO explanation!! It's so frustrating!! My sister's coworker had her disability payments stopped for SIX WEEKS while they did some stupid "review" and she almost got evicted!!! The system is completely broken and they don't care at all about people suffering. I bet if we were big corporations they'd make sure the money came on time!!!

•While I understand your frustration, it's important to note that these reviews are actually designed to prevent fraud and ensure benefits go to eligible claimants. That said, EDD absolutely should communicate better about when reviews are happening and their expected timeframes. The lack of transparency is the real issue here, not necessarily the reviews themselves.

Update: I finally got through to EDD this morning! Used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and was connected to a rep in about 15 minutes. The representative confirmed exactly what many of you said - my retroactive claim is under routine review since it spans both SDI and PFL programs. She said the review should be completed by next week, and if approved, the remaining payments will be released all at once. Such a relief to finally get an answer! Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions.

•Great news! Thanks for updating us. This is exactly the standard process for retroactive claims that span multiple benefit programs. Glad you were able to get confirmation directly from EDD.
