Confused about EDD SDI online form date - file on disability start date or day after?

I just got a medical leave from my doctor yesterday (10/12) and I'm confused about when I should submit my disability claim online. The EDD website says to file after your first day of disability but I'm not sure if that means I should put 10/13 (today, my first full day off work) or 10/14 (the day after my first disability day). My HR department told me one thing but then my doctor's office said something different. Does anyone know the exact date I'm supposed to use on the DE 2501 form? I don't want to mess this up and delay my benefits. Thanks in advance!

You file after ur first day being disabled so 10/14. just went thru this in august

Thanks! Did your benefits start processing right away? I'm worried about messing up the dates and having to start all over.

The previous response isn't quite right. Your first day of disability is 10/13, so you should be filing on 10/14. The date you enter on the DE 2501 form should be 10/13 as your disability start date. Remember that SDI has a 7-day waiting period before benefits kick in, so you won't receive payment for the first week regardless of which date you enter. Make sure your doctor's certification matches your start date too, or you'll run into processing delays.

I think people are mixing up two different things here: 1. Your disability START DATE (which is 10/13 based on your post) 2. The DATE YOU FILE the claim (which should be 10/14 or after) You need to put 10/13 as your disability start date on the form, but you should be submitting the form on or after 10/14. Hope that clarifies things!

That makes so much more sense! Thank you for explaining the difference. So I'll file tomorrow but put today's date (10/13) as my actual disability start date on the form.

Just wanted to make one more clarification - the first day of your disability would be the first day you couldn't work due to your medical condition. So if 10/13 is your first day unable to work, that's your disability start date. The EDD SDI system allows you to file your claim online anytime after that date (even months later, though you shouldn't wait that long). Also, make sure your doctor submits their certification within 9 days of your disability beginning - that's often where delays come from, not the date issue. And yes, be prepared for the 7-day unpaid waiting period that starts on your disability date!

My doctor took 15 days to submit the certification and my claim was delayed by WEEKS. I wish someone had told me to stay on top of them about it!!!

Everyone here is making this WAY too complicated!!! Just call EDD and ask them directly!! I spent hours trying to figure out my disability dates and ended up with wrong info from forums.

LOLOL good luck calling EDD... I tried for 2 weeks straight and kept getting disconnected. The system is completely broken!

If you really need to talk to EDD, try Claimyr.com - it got me through to an actual person in less than 30 minutes when I was dealing with my disability date confusion. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd showing how it works. Saved me hours of frustration when my claim had date problems.

Thank you everyone for the responses! I'm going to file my claim tomorrow (10/14) but put 10/13 as my disability start date. I'll make sure my doctor's certification matches this date too. I appreciate all the help - this process is more confusing than I expected!

Perfect plan. And just remember to be patient - even when everything is done correctly, the initial payment can take 2-3 weeks to process. Good luck with your disability claim and your recovery!

my cousin works for edd and he says they dont even look at the exact day u submit just the dates on the form so dont stress too much about when u submit

One last tip: take screenshots of everything you submit online. The EDD SDI online system sometimes has glitches, and having documentation of what you submitted and when can save you a lot of headaches if there are any issues later. I learned this the hard way when they claimed I never submitted a form that I definitely did submit.

That's great advice - I'll definitely do that. Better safe than sorry!

Just wanted to add - if you're still within your first few days of disability, you might also want to check if your employer has any specific requirements for notifying them about your SDI claim. Some companies want a copy of your claim confirmation or want to be notified within a certain timeframe. It's worth double-checking with HR to make sure you're covering all your bases, especially since you mentioned they gave you different info than your doctor's office initially.

Hey Malik! I went through this exact same confusion last year. The key thing to remember is that your disability START DATE is when you actually became unable to work (10/13 in your case), but you can file the claim anytime AFTER that date. So you're doing it right - file tomorrow but use 10/13 as your start date on the form. One thing I wish someone had told me: keep checking your EDD SDI online account every few days after filing. Sometimes they'll request additional documentation and you won't get notified by email, so you have to log in to see if there are any pending requests. Also, if your claim gets stuck in "pending" status for more than 2 weeks, that's when you definitely want to try calling (or using one of those callback services people mentioned). Good luck with your recovery!

Thank you Steven! This is really helpful advice. I didn't realize I needed to check the online account regularly for additional requests - that's exactly the kind of thing that could cause delays. I'll make sure to log in every few days after I submit tomorrow. Really appreciate everyone taking the time to help me navigate this process!

I just went through this same situation a few months ago and it's definitely confusing at first! You've got the right approach - file tomorrow (10/14) with 10/13 as your disability start date. One thing I'd add is to make sure you have all your paperwork ready before you start the online form, including your doctor's contact info and your employer details. The form times out if you take too long, and I had to restart twice because I was scrambling to find information. Also, write down your confirmation number as soon as you submit - you'll need it if you have to call later. The whole process took me about 20 minutes once I had everything organized. Hope your recovery goes smoothly!

This is super helpful! I was wondering about the timeout issue - I'll definitely gather all my documents first before starting the form. Quick question: do you remember if they asked for your employer's EIN or just the company name and address? I want to make sure I have everything ready. Thanks for the tip about writing down the confirmation number too!

From what I remember, they asked for both the company name/address AND the EIN number. I had to dig through my pay stub to find the EIN, so definitely have that ready! Also make sure you have your doctor's office phone number and fax number - not just their name. The form is pretty thorough about contact details for everyone involved. One more thing - if you're planning to file tomorrow morning, try to do it early in the day. I noticed the EDD website tends to be slower in the afternoons, probably due to higher traffic.

I just went through this exact process two months ago and had the same confusion! You're absolutely right to file tomorrow (10/14) with 10/13 as your disability start date. One thing that really helped me was calling my doctor's office the day before filing to confirm they had received the disability paperwork from my visit and would be submitting their certification promptly. I also made sure to ask them exactly what date they were putting as my disability start date on their form - you want these to match perfectly or EDD will flag it for review. Also, don't panic if your claim shows "pending" for the first week or so - that's totally normal while they verify everything. The 7-day waiting period is unpaid anyway, so you're not losing money during that initial processing time. Just keep checking your online account every few days like others mentioned. Good luck with your recovery and hope you get back to feeling better soon!

This is really reassuring, thank you! I'm definitely going to call my doctor's office first thing in the morning to confirm they have the right date before I file. That's a great tip about making sure the dates match exactly - I can see how even a one-day difference could cause problems. I appreciate everyone sharing their experiences here, it's making me feel much more confident about the process. Hopefully everything goes smoothly and I can update this thread with good news in a few weeks!

I went through this same situation last month and it was so confusing at first! You're definitely on the right track - file tomorrow (10/14) but put 10/13 as your disability start date on the form. That's exactly what I did and everything processed smoothly. One thing I wish someone had warned me about: make sure to save your claim confirmation number somewhere safe AND take a screenshot of the confirmation page. I thought I had written it down correctly but apparently made a mistake, and when I needed to reference my claim later, I couldn't find it anywhere in my email. Luckily I had taken a screenshot as backup. Also, after you submit, you'll probably get an email saying they received your claim, but don't expect to hear much else for about 10-14 days while they process everything. The waiting is nerve-wracking but totally normal! Hope your recovery goes well and the claim process is smooth for you.

Thank you so much Zara! That's really good advice about saving the confirmation number in multiple places - I definitely don't want to run into issues later if I need to reference it. I'll make sure to screenshot everything and write it down too. It's reassuring to hear that your claim processed smoothly when you did it the same way. The 10-14 day wait sounds long but I guess that's just how the system works. Really appreciate you sharing your experience!

Just wanted to chime in as someone who's been through this process recently! You've gotten great advice here - definitely file tomorrow (10/14) with 10/13 as your disability start date. One thing I'd add that I learned the hard way: if you're using any browser extensions or ad blockers, try disabling them before filling out the EDD form. I had my form reset twice because my ad blocker was interfering with some of the page elements. Also, make sure you're using a supported browser - I had issues with Safari but Chrome worked perfectly. The whole process is stressful enough without technical glitches adding to it! Wishing you a smooth filing process and a speedy recovery.

Thanks for the technical tips Jamal! I wouldn't have thought about browser extensions causing issues - that's exactly the kind of thing that could turn into a major headache. I'll definitely use Chrome and disable my ad blocker before starting the form tomorrow. It's amazing how many little details there are to consider with this process, but everyone's advice is making me feel much more prepared. Really grateful for this community!

I'm currently going through this same situation and all the advice here has been incredibly helpful! Just to add my experience - I initially got confused because my HR department told me to wait until my "first full day off work" to file, but they meant that as the disability start date, not the filing date. It sounds like you've got it figured out now though - file tomorrow with 10/13 as your start date. One small tip: when you're filling out the form, there's a section where they ask about your last day of work - that would be 10/12 in your case. Make sure that date is consistent with your disability start date of 10/13. The form logic checks for these kinds of inconsistencies. Good luck tomorrow!

•

This is such a helpful clarification Aaliyah! I hadn't thought about the "last day of work" field but that makes perfect sense - if my disability starts 10/13, then my last day of work would indeed be 10/12. It's good to know the form checks for these consistency issues because I definitely don't want to create any red flags that could delay processing. Thanks for sharing that detail about what your HR department meant too - it sounds like there's a lot of room for miscommunication in how these dates get explained. I'm feeling much more confident about filing tomorrow now that I understand all these nuances!

I went through this exact same confusion a few months back! You're doing it right - file tomorrow (10/14) with 10/13 as your disability start date. One thing that really helped me was setting up a simple checklist before filing: 1) Doctor's contact info and fax number, 2) Employer's name, address and EIN from my pay stub, 3) Last day worked (10/12 for you), 4) First day of disability (10/13), and 5) Browser prep (Chrome with ad blockers off). The whole process took about 15 minutes once I had everything organized. Also, definitely call your doctor's office tomorrow morning before filing to confirm they're planning to submit their certification with 10/13 as the start date - having matching dates is crucial. The waiting period after filing is nerve-wracking but totally normal. Take screenshots of everything and save that confirmation number in multiple places! Wishing you a smooth filing process and speedy recovery.

This checklist is amazing - thank you so much Shelby! I'm definitely going to use this exact approach. It's so helpful to have someone break it down into simple steps like this. I've been feeling overwhelmed by all the details but your checklist makes it feel much more manageable. I'll gather everything tonight so I'm ready to go first thing tomorrow morning. Really appreciate you taking the time to lay it out so clearly!

I just went through this exact same situation last week and want to confirm what everyone else is saying - you're absolutely doing this right! File tomorrow (10/14) with 10/13 as your disability start date. The confusion is totally understandable because the wording on EDD's website isn't super clear. One thing I'd add that saved me some stress: after you submit tomorrow, write down not just your confirmation number but also the exact time you submitted and take a screenshot of your browser's URL bar showing you're on the EDD site. I had a weird glitch where my initial submission didn't go through (even though I got a confirmation screen), and having that timestamp helped when I called EDD later. Also, don't be surprised if your claim status shows as "Under Review" for the first week or so - that's completely normal while they process everything. The 7-day waiting period starts counting from your disability start date (10/13) regardless, so you're not losing any time. Good luck with your filing tomorrow and hope you feel better soon!

Thank you Ally! That's really smart advice about documenting the timestamp and URL - I never would have thought of that but it makes total sense in case there are any technical issues. It's reassuring to hear from someone who just went through this last week that the process worked smoothly when done this way. I'm definitely going to follow everyone's advice here and file tomorrow morning with all my documentation ready. This thread has been incredibly helpful - I went from being completely confused to feeling confident about the whole process. Really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences!

Just wanted to jump in here as someone who made this exact mistake! I filed my claim using the wrong start date (put the day I filed instead of my actual first day of disability) and it caused a 3-week delay while they had to review and correct everything. Definitely stick with what everyone is saying - file tomorrow but use 10/13 as your disability start date on the form. The key thing to remember is these are two separate things: when you became disabled vs when you submit the paperwork. Also, one tip I haven't seen mentioned yet - if you're planning to file early tomorrow morning, the EDD system sometimes does maintenance between 12-3 AM, so if you're up late tonight don't try to file then. Wait until after 6 AM to be safe. You've got this!

Omar Mahmoud

•

Oh wow, a 3-week delay sounds terrible! Thanks for sharing that cautionary tale - it really drives home how important it is to get the dates right the first time. I definitely don't want to go through that kind of hassle on top of dealing with my medical situation. Good point about the system maintenance too - I was thinking about trying to file late tonight to get it over with, but I'll wait until tomorrow morning like everyone suggests. Really appreciate you sharing what went wrong so the rest of us can avoid that mistake!

Hey Malik! I just went through this same exact situation about 6 weeks ago and had the exact same confusion with the dates. You've gotten some really solid advice here - definitely file tomorrow (10/14) but use 10/13 as your disability start date on the DE 2501 form. One thing I learned that might help you: when you're on the EDD SDI website filling out the form, there's actually a little "help" icon next to the disability start date field that explains it should be "the first day you were unable to work due to your medical condition." That really cleared it up for me when I was second-guessing myself. Also, since you mentioned your HR and doctor gave you different info - this is super common! I'd recommend calling your doctor's office tomorrow morning before you file, just to confirm they're going to use 10/13 as the start date on their certification too. Having those dates match exactly will save you potential headaches later. The whole process is definitely more confusing than it needs to be, but you're asking all the right questions. Hope your recovery goes smoothly and the claim processes without any issues!

Thanks so much Yara! That's really helpful to know about the help icon on the form - I'll definitely look for that when I'm filling it out tomorrow. It sounds like having that extra confirmation right there on the page would give me peace of mind that I'm doing it right. And yes, I'm definitely going to call my doctor's office first thing in the morning to make sure we're on the same page with the 10/13 start date. This whole thread has been such a lifesaver - I was honestly pretty stressed about messing this up, but now I feel like I have a solid plan. Really appreciate everyone taking the time to share their experiences and help out a newcomer!

I'm going through something similar right now and this thread has been incredibly helpful! Just wanted to add one more thing that I learned from my experience - if you have any direct deposit information set up with EDD from previous unemployment claims, make sure to double-check that it's still current in your profile before filing. I found out the hard way that my old bank account info was still on file, and it delayed my first payment by over a week while I had to update everything and wait for them to reissue it. It's a small detail but could save you some hassle later. Also, completely agree with everyone about calling your doctor's office first - mine initially had the wrong date on their calendar and we caught it just in time. Good luck tomorrow Malik, sounds like you're all set with a solid plan!
