How long after completing WTW job search form until I'm added to my CalWORKs case?
I finally signed all the paperwork for Welfare to Work job search program yesterday. The worker said something about me being added to the case but didn't explain when I'd start receiving benefits. Does anyone know how long it typically takes after completing the job search agreement before I'm officially added to my mom's CalWORKs case? I've been living with her and my little brother (he's 4) for about 3 months now, and she reported the household change, but they told her I needed to do the WTW stuff first before they'd increase her cash aid. Really need this to happen soon because I'm contributing to bills but only working part-time right now.

I think it depends on when in the month u signed? Like if its before the 10th they might add u for the next month but if its after they might wait till the month after. Atleast thats what happened with my cousin when she moved in with me

•I signed on the 14th, so I guess that means I'll have to wait until next month? That's gonna be tough.

The timing depends on a few factors. Generally, when you sign your WTW plan and job search agreement, the county should process this as a mid-period change and add you to the assistance unit for the following month. Since you're an adult being added to your mom's case, you'll need to meet participation requirements to receive benefits. Time frame specifics: - If all verification is complete and you've signed your job search plan, it typically takes 10-15 business days for processing - The actual increase in benefits should appear the following month after processing is complete - Your mom should receive a Notice of Action explaining the change in benefit amount I would recommend calling her caseworker to confirm the exact timeline for your situation, as counties can vary slightly in their processing times.

•Thank you! That's really helpful. The worker didn't mention anything about a Notice of Action. Do they mail those out automatically or does my mom need to request one?

Yes, the Notice of Action (NOA) is automatically generated and mailed whenever there's a change to benefits. Your mom should receive it before the change takes effect. It will show the new household size, the updated benefit calculation, and the effective date of the change.

•Not always true!!!! I had my nephew added last year and NEVER got a NOA. Benefits just showed up different on my EBT card with no explanation. When I called they said "oh yeah we processed that" but couldn't tell me how they calculated it. You should ALWAYS call and check!!!

Your timing is unfortunate - mid-month additions like yours can sometimes fall into administrative limbo. The county processes SAR7 reports and recertifications first, then handles mid-period changes like yours. Some counties are much faster than others. I've had several clients who struggled to reach their workers to check on this exact issue. If you need to confirm when you'll be added, I'd suggest trying Claimyr (claimyr.com) - they helped one of my clients get through to her worker after weeks of trying. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE Also worth noting: be sure your job search logs are being submitted properly. If you miss submitting job search verification, they can delay your addition to the case or even remove you after adding you.

•Thanks for the tip about Claimyr. My mom's been calling for days and just gets the automated system. I'll check out that site. And thanks for mentioning the job search logs - I didn't realize I need to start submitting those right away!

•This is why I hate the CalWORKs system! They ALWAYS "lose" paperwork and then blame us. I've started taking pictures of every single form I submit with date stamps. It's ridiculous we have to go to these lengths just to get basic help we qualify for.

Signing the job search agreement is just one part of being added to a CalWORKs case. Did you also have to provide: - Photo ID - Social Security card - Citizenship/immigration status verification - Income verification (pay stubs) If any of these items are missing, they won't process the addition. Also, did you sign up for the required orientation? Sometimes they won't process until that's complete too. For WTW participation requirements, you typically need to do 20-30 hours per week of approved activities. Since you're already working part-time, those hours count toward your requirement, but you'll need to make up the difference with job search activities.

•Yes, I provided all of those documents when we first reported the household change about 2 months ago. I did the orientation last week (it was online) and then signed the job search plan yesterday. My part-time job is only 15 hours a week right now, so I need to do job search for another 15 hours to meet the 30-hour requirement. The worker explained that part.

When I went through this last year, they told me 30 days but it took closer to 45!!! And I had to call MULTIPLE times because they kept saying they were "working on it" but nothing was happening. The system is so broken. My suggestion: call EVERY WEEK to check status. Don't trust when they say it's "in process" because that could mean it's sitting in someone's pile doing nothing. Be polite but persistent!

•That's really frustrating! I was hoping it would be quicker since we're struggling financially right now. I'll definitely start calling regularly to check on it.

Honestly depends on whether the worker actually submits the paperwork when they say they will... my sister had to wait 3 MONTHS because her worker "forgot" to process it even though she signed everything. When the worker finally did it, the benefits were backdated but that didn't help her when she needed money for those 3 months! The system is a joke sometimes.

One important thing to remember: once you're added to the case, you'll need to meet your WTW hours consistently. Make sure you understand exactly how to document your job search activities and your work hours. Each county has specific forms and procedures for this. For job search documentation, generally you need to show: - Names and contact information of places you applied - Dates of applications/interviews - Follow-up actions - Time spent on each activity Keep detailed records of everything. If your worker determines you aren't meeting the requirements, they can issue a sanction, which would remove your portion of the grant (though not affect your mom's or brother's portions).

•Thanks for the detailed explanation! The worker gave me a form to track my job search activities but didn't really explain what details I needed to include. This helps a lot. I definitely don't want to get sanctioned after going through all this trouble to get added.
