CalWORKs renewal interview no-shows - rescheduled 4 times but workers never call
I'm beyond frustrated with my CalWORKs renewal process. I had my phone interview initially scheduled 3 weeks ago, but the worker never called. So I rescheduled. Again, no call on the scheduled date and time. I've now rescheduled THREE MORE TIMES, and they haven't called for any of them! I'm terrified my benefits are going to be cut off because I can't complete this renewal interview that THEY keep missing. I called the ACCESS customer service line today and the rep basically said there's nothing they can do except... reschedule again. Seriously?? My redetermination paperwork is all submitted correctly, I've been sitting by my phone for every appointment, and I can't afford to lose my Cash Aid because they can't keep their appointments. Has anyone dealt with this? What can I do if they miss the call AGAIN? My kids and I depend on this assistance and I'm getting really worried.

•Did your benefits automatically get suspended after they missed the interviews? Did you have to do anything special to get them back? I'm worried that's what's going to happen to me.

This is ridiculous but honestly happens ALL THE TIME with CalWORKs renewals. The county workers are so overwhelmed they sometimes mark interviews as "client no-show" even when THEY'RE the ones who never called! I'd suggest immediately requesting a "good cause" exemption for any missed interviews stating that you were available but no call was received. I also recommend asking for a specific worker's direct number or email when you reschedule. Sometimes getting assigned to a specific person helps because they become accountable directly to you.

•I didn't know I could ask for a good cause exemption for this! I'll definitely bring that up next time I call. Do you know if there's a specific form I need to request or just ask for it verbally?

•They never give out direct numbers anymore!!! I've tried multiple times and they always say "policy doesn't allow it" which is complete BS if you ask me. The system is DESIGNED to make it impossible to reach anyone.

I'm going through this exact nightmare with my SAR7 right now! Here's what has actually worked for me in the past: 1. Document EVERYTHING - write down every time you called, who you spoke with, and what they said 2. Ask to speak to a supervisor specifically about the pattern of missed interviews 3. Request that they note in your file that you've been available for all scheduled interviews 4. If your benefits do get cut off, immediately file for a state hearing (you have 90 days) The system is broken but you have rights! They cannot discontinue your CalWORKs if THEY are the ones missing the interviews.

•Thank you! I'm definitely going to start documenting everything. Do you know how I request a state hearing if it comes to that? Through the county office or somewhere else?

•You can request a state hearing in several ways: 1. Online through the CDSS website 2. Call the state hearing division directly: 1-800-743-8525 3. Complete the form on the back of any Notice of Action 4. Ask your county office for a hearing request form But before you get to that point, try one more thing: When you reschedule, ask them to send you a confirmation email or text of the appointment. Some counties now offer this. It creates a paper trail that you can use later if needed.

You might want to try using Claimyr. I was dealing with the EXACT same issue for my WTW appointment (waited 3 times, no calls). Someone here recommended Claimyr and it actually worked! The service calls CalWORKs for you and then connects you when they get through to a real person. No more waiting on hold forever or dealing with the automated system that just hangs up. I used it last week and got through to an actual worker in about 20 minutes who was able to schedule me for a SAME DAY interview. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they have a video demo too: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE

•Thanks for this suggestion! I've never heard of this service. Does it work for all counties? I'm in LA County and their phone system is absolutely terrible.

•Yes, it works for LA County! That's actually where I am too. Their phone system is the WORST. Claimyr basically waits on hold for you and then calls you when they get a real person. Saved me so much stress.

THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT OUR TIME AT ALL!!!! I've had SIX missed interviews for different programs over the past year. SIX!!!! They expect us to be waiting by the phone all day but can't be bothered to actually make the calls they schedule. Then they blame US when our benefits get cut. The whole system is designed to kick people off by making it impossible to complete the process. I'm sorry you're dealing with this but trust me you're not alone.

•While I understand your frustration, some counties are just severely understaffed. I've found that staying calm but persistent is more effective than getting angry. Document everything and follow up systematically.

•"Staying calm" doesn't get my rent paid when they cut off my benefits for THEIR mistakes!! Easy to say when it's not YOUR kids going hungry. They should hire more people if they're "understaffed" - not make it our problem!

When this happened to me, I finally asked to schedule an IN-PERSON interview instead of phone. Yes, it was annoying to go down to the office, but at least I got it done and didn't have to worry about missed calls. Some counties even have drop-in hours for renewal interviews, might be worth asking about that option?

•That's actually a great idea! I didn't think about requesting an in-person interview. Did you have to wait long when you went in? I have kids and would need to figure out childcare.

•I waited about an hour, but they did have a children's play area in my county office (Los Angeles). I brought my 4yo and some snacks and it was fine. Just make sure to bring ALL your documentation with you - ID, social security cards, pay stubs, etc. The good thing is you walk out KNOWING it's done instead of this phone tag nightmare.

I had a similar issue with my CalWORKs and CalFresh interview. I finally contacted my local legal aid office and they helped me resolve it. They can sometimes call the county on your behalf and navigate the system better than we can on our own. Google "legal aid" plus your county name.

•I didn't know legal aid would help with something like this. Thank you for the suggestion. I'll look them up if this doesn't get resolved soon.
