CalWORKs renewal form deadline confusion - no specific date listed for April

I just got my CalWORKs renewal packet in the mail and it says I need to complete it for April, but there's no specific date listed anywhere on when it's actually due. I'm freaking out a bit because I don't want my Cash Aid to stop. Does anyone know exactly when renewals need to be turned in? Is it the 1st of April? The end of April? And can I just fill out all the forms online through BenefitsCal instead of mailing everything back? This is my first renewal and I'm so confused about the timeline.

Your CalWORKs renewal is due by the 5th of your renewal month, so if April is your renewal month, you need to submit it by April 5th. And yes, you absolutely can do it online through BenefitsCal! It's actually faster that way. Just log in, go to 'Renewals' and you should see it waiting for you to complete. The online system will also let you upload any verification documents they're asking for (pay stubs, rent receipts, etc.).

Thank you! Is the 5th a hard deadline? What happens if I submit on the 6th or 7th? Will my benefits just automatically stop?

ur supposed to get it in b4 the month starts actually... like march submission for april benefits. thats what my worker told me. but online is def easier, just take pics of all ur docs with ur phone

This isn't correct. CalWORKs renewals are due by the 5th of the renewal month, not the month before. You might be thinking of the SAR7 mid-period report which is due by the 5th of the month before the next payment period.

I hate how they never put the ACTUAL DUE DATE on those renewal forms!! It's like they WANT us to miss deadlines and lose benefits. My worker said it's the 5th too but I always turn mine in by the 1st just to be safe because one time I submitted on the 4th and still got discontinued!! Had to do the whole reapplication process all over again. The system is designed to make you fail I swear.

Omg same! I got discontinued last year even though I swear I turned everything in on time. I had to wait almost a month to get my benefits back and nearly got evicted while waiting. Now I'm paranoid and turn everything in super early.

I've been on CalWORKs for 3 years and have had terrible experiences trying to reach workers about my renewals. Last time I called, I was on hold for 2 hours and then got disconnected! I started using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to actual workers faster. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE Basically they wait on hold for you and call you back when a worker picks up. It's been a lifesaver for renewal questions since you can talk to your actual worker instead of just the call center people who can't really help with specific questions.

Thanks for the tip! I've never been able to get through on the phone so this might help. Does it work with any county?

To answer your follow-up question: The 5th is technically the deadline, but there's a 10-day 'good cause' period after that. If you submit between the 6th-15th, you'll need to explain why you couldn't submit by the 5th (like illness, emergency, etc.). After the 15th, your benefits will likely be discontinued, and you might need to reapply. BTW, no matter when you submit, make SURE you keep proof. If you mail it, get a receipt. If you drop it off in person, get a date-stamped copy. If you do it online (which I recommend), take a screenshot of the confirmation page. This has saved me multiple times when the county claimed they never received my paperwork!

This is super helpful, thank you! I'll definitely do it online and keep screenshots of everything. I'm going to try to get it done this weekend just to be safe.

THIS!!! They are ALWAYS claiming they didn't receive something even when you sent it. I started taking pictures of EVERYTHING before I send it and then screenshots of confirmation pages. Still doesn't always help because they just say "we never got it" and there's nothing you can do except resend and hope your benefits don't stop while you're waiting.

Just to add some official clarification: CalWORKs and CalFresh annual redeterminations are technically due by the 5th of your redetermination month, but the system won't actually discontinue you until the end of that month. However, if you submit after the 5th, your June benefit could be delayed while they process the late renewal. If you submit after the 15th, there's a high risk of discontinuance. When doing your renewal online through BenefitsCal, make sure you: 1. Complete ALL sections (don't leave anything blank) 2. Upload ALL requested verifications (pay stubs, rent/utility bills, childcare receipts, etc.) 3. If you're in the Welfare to Work program, include your WTW participation documentation 4. Review everything before submission - simple errors can cause delays Online submission gives you a confirmation number - save it or screenshot it as proof of submission.

Thanks for all this detail! I'm not in WTW since I have a 1-year-old (I have an exemption), but I'll make sure to include all my income proof and rent receipts. Do I need to submit my bank statements too or just what they specifically ask for?

Only submit what they specifically request in your renewal packet. If they didn't specifically ask for bank statements, you don't need to include them. But always include proof of rent/mortgage, utilities, childcare costs, and any income - these are standard requirements. Since you mentioned having a 1-year-old with a WTW exemption, make sure that exemption is still documented in your case. Young child exemptions are automatic but sometimes need to be verified at renewal.

Got it! I'll make sure to check everything carefully. I just logged into BenefitsCal and I can see my renewal is there waiting for me. Going to set aside time tomorrow to complete everything. Thank you all for the help!

Good luck with your renewal! Just wanted to add that if you're doing it online through BenefitsCal, the system will actually show you a checklist of everything you need to submit before you can finalize it. It's really helpful because it won't let you submit until everything is complete. Also, if you have any trouble uploading documents (sometimes the system is glitchy), you can always drop them off at your local office and reference your online submission. The workers can match them up in the system. You've got this!

That's so reassuring to know about the checklist feature! I was worried I might miss something important but it sounds like the system will guide me through it. And good to know about the backup option of dropping off documents at the office if there are any upload issues. I'm feeling much more confident about getting this done now. Thank you for the encouragement!
