Will our mixed household qualify for CalFresh/EBT with one income and 2 kids (plus baby on the way)?
Hi everyone, I've been stressing about our food situation and thinking about applying for CalFresh (EBT). Our household is me (pregnant), my boyfriend (not married), and our two kids (both under 5). My boyfriend is the only one working right now and his paycheck just isn't stretching far enough with these crazy food prices. We're literally overdrafting our account just to buy groceries some weeks. I'm confused about how they count households though. Since we're not married but live together and have kids together, do we count as one household for benefits? Also, does being pregnant count as another household member yet or only after the baby is born? We're barely keeping afloat and I'm worried we won't make it through next month without some help. Does anyone know what the income limits are for a family of 4 (or 5 if my pregnancy counts)? And will they look at our bank statements with negative balances as proof we need help? Thanks for any advice!

You absolutely should apply ASAP! For CalFresh, they consider you a household if you buy and prepare food together - marriage doesn't matter. Your pregnancy will count as another household member once you provide verification (usually a doctor's note). The gross monthly income limit for a household of 4 in 2025 is around $3,750, and for 5 people it's about $4,400. With only one income and multiple kids, you have a good chance of qualifying. They'll probably ask for bank statements as part of verification, and negative balances do show financial need. If you're having trouble getting through to your county CalFresh office on the phone (which is super common), I used a service called Claimyr that was a lifesaver. It holds your place in the phone queue and calls you back when a worker is available to talk. Saved me hours of waiting on hold. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a demo video that explains it: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8

•Thank you so much for this information! I had no idea the income limits were that high - we're definitely under that amount. I'll get a note from my doctor about the pregnancy too. The phone thing is a good tip because I tried calling our county office yesterday and gave up after being on hold for 45 minutes. I'll check out that Claimyr thing because I really need to get this application started ASAP.

yes u definitely qualify in your situation! me and my bf aren't married either and we get calfresh for our family. they don't care about marriage status, just who lives together and eats together. and negative bank balance doesn't matter, they look at income not what's in your account. but keep paystubs cause they'll want to see those!

•That's such a relief to hear from someone in a similar situation! We definitely keep all the paystubs so that's good. Did they ask you for any other documents besides the paystubs when you applied?

You need to know about the resources limit too. In California, the resource limit for most households is $4,250 (or $5,500 if at least one household member is disabled or 60+ years old). Resources include cash, money in bank accounts, stocks, etc. But they DON'T count your home, personal property, or retirement accounts. With negative bank balances, that won't be an issue for you. BTW they DO count you as pregnant, but it's a separate form called a CW 8 that asks for Pregnancy Verification from your doctor. They'll add your baby after they're born too. Apply now because processing can take up to 30 days!!

•Not true about the resource limits! California got rid of the CalFresh resource test years ago as part of BBCE (Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility). They ONLY look at income now, not bank accounts or resources for most households. This is common misinformation.

•Oh shoot you're right! I was confusing CalWORKs with CalFresh. CalFresh doesn't have the asset test anymore in CA. My bad for the wrong info!

I was in your exact situation 3 months ago (pregnant with 2 kids and boyfriend is only income). We qualified for $950/month for our family of 4 (they didn't count pregnancy yet cuz I didn't know to bring proof). MAKE SURE you tell them about all your expenses - rent, utilities, childcare costs if any. The more expenses you have that they can deduct, the more benefits you get. Good luck mama!

•$950 a month would be life-changing for us right now. We pay so much for rent and utilities, plus my oldest has some special needs therapy copays. I'll definitely list all of that. Thanks for sharing your experience - it gives me hope!

The system is RIGGED to make it hard to apply. They will ask for a million documents and then claim they never received them. MAKE COPIES OF EVERYTHING and get receipt numbers for everything you submit!!! And don't believe them when they say your application is complete, follow up EVERY WEEK or your app will sit there for months!!! They denied me twice before finally approving me even though my situation never changed. You have to FIGHT for your benefits!

•this is kinda dramatic lol. my worker was super nice and helpful. it depends on your county and who you get. but yes keeping copies is always smart

•Maybe YOU got lucky, but most people I know had horrible experiences. My friend's kids went hungry for 2 months because they "lost" her paperwork TWICE. The system is broken!

One more thing to consider - if you apply and qualify, you might automatically qualify for other programs too. When we got CalFresh, we also got reduced-price internet ($10/month), utility assistance through LIHEAP, and free cell phone service. My kids also automatically qualified for free school meals. It's worth applying for everything you can!

•I had no idea about these other benefits! The internet discount would be amazing since we're paying like $75/month right now. Are these other benefits something I can apply for at the same time as CalFresh?

To directly answer your question: Yes, a household of 4 with one income under the limits will absolutely qualify. Apply through BenefitsCal.com - it's the fastest way. You can upload all your documents there too. Your unborn baby counts once you provide verification. The fact that you're not married is completely irrelevant for CalFresh eligibility. Currently in 2025, a household of 4 can have gross monthly income up to about $3,750. Even if you're slightly over that, you might still qualify after deductions. Negative bank balance actually doesn't matter for eligibility - they only care about income, not what's currently in your accounts.

•Thank you for the clear explanation. I'll definitely use BenefitsCal.com - that sounds easier than trying to do it all over the phone. My boyfriend gets paid every two weeks, so sometimes months look like we get paid more if there are three pay periods. Will that affect things?

•Great question about the pay periods! For CalFresh, they convert weekly or bi-weekly income to monthly by multiplying weekly pay by 4.33 and bi-weekly by 2.167. They understand the fluctuation in months with extra pay periods, so don't worry about that. Just provide all his recent pay stubs and they'll calculate it correctly.

OP, how's your application process going? Were you able to get through to your county office? My advice is to complete the application online AND call to follow up, as sometimes online applications can sit pending if you don't call. Don't wait too long if you're struggling with food now - there are emergency food banks that can help while you wait for CalFresh to be approved.

•I actually just finished the online application yesterday! Used that Claimyr service someone mentioned to get through to a real person and they helped me make sure everything was filled out right. They said with our situation we might qualify for expedited benefits (within 3 days) since we're in such a tight spot financially. Keeping my fingers crossed! They also gave me info about a local food bank that I'm going to check out tomorrow.
