When are COVID emergency CalFresh allotments being deposited? July 23 but which day?

I'm totally confused about the COVID emergency allotment for CalFresh this month. Just checked my EBT card balance and nothing's there yet. The paper notice I got said something about July 23 but I can't remember if that meant it would arrive ON the 23rd or AFTER. Does anybody know if it's coming today or tomorrow? I've got 3 kids at home and we're running pretty low on groceries right now. Can't get through on the county phone line (as usual) 😠

Wait what?? Are you serious? Nobody told me anything about them ending! I was counting on that extra money this month!

The COVID emergency allotments for CalFresh officially ended in February 2023. There are no more extra payments being issued now in 2025. You're just getting your regular monthly benefit amount loaded on your usual issuance date based on your case number. Check your last approval letter to see what your regular benefit amount is.

OMG I had no idea! I've been waiting for these extra payments every month. No wonder nothing ever came. Why didn't they tell us???

Emergency allotments ended more than 2 years ago. What you're seeing on July 23rd is probably just your regular monthly CalFresh benefit deposit. Benefits are distributed over the first 10 days of the month in California based on the last digit of your case number. The 23rd date might be referring to something else like your Semi-Annual Report (SAR7) due date or your recertification month.

This is correct. I work for the county. Regular benefits are issued between the 1st and 10th of each month based on the last digit of your case number. If you're seeing July 23, that's likely your SAR7 due date or when your recertification is due. If you miss either deadline, your benefits will stop.

July 23rd is NOT a regular issuance date for CalFresh in California. It's definitely either your SAR7 due date or your recertification deadline. CHECK THIS IMMEDIATELY! If it's your recertification and you miss it, your benefits will stop completely and you'll have to reapply. If it's your SAR7, you have until the end of the month to submit it before your benefits stop.

Oh no! I found the letter and you're right - it says I need to complete my recertification by July 23 or my benefits will stop. I thought it was talking about the extra payment! What do I do now? Can I still complete it or is it too late???

You can still complete it today! Log into BenefitsCal.com right now and submit your recertification online. If you can't do it online, go to your county office first thing tomorrow morning and ask for help completing it. They MUST help you if you go in person. Bring your ID and any income verification you have (pay stubs, etc).

u should also call ur county worker directly if u can!! I missed my recert deadline last yr and they helped me do it over the phone in like 20 mins and i didn't lose my benefits. but getting through to them is IMPOSSIBLE sometimes lol

If you're having trouble getting through to a CalFresh worker on the phone (which is super common), you might want to try Claimyr. I used it last month when I was desperate to reach someone about a similar situation. It basically keeps calling for you and gets you through to a live person without the wait. Saved me hours of frustration. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. Much better than trying to call over and over or taking time off work to go to the office.

Thank you! I just tried calling again and got disconnected after waiting 45 minutes. I'll check out that service right now. I'm desperate to get this fixed before we lose our benefits completely!

my cousin works for calfresh and she said they sometimes give u a grace period if u call and explain u misunderstood the letter. worth a shot

This is partially correct. There's a 30-day restoration period after benefits are discontinued where you can complete your recertification without having to reapply. However, there might still be a gap in benefits depending on when you complete it. Best to do it immediately to avoid any disruption.

UPDATE: I was able to get through to my worker using that Claimyr service and you were all right - the July 23 date was my recertification deadline, not a payment date. The worker let me complete the recertification over the phone and said my benefits should continue without interruption! She also explained that the emergency allotments ended in 2023 and told me about some local food banks I can use if needed. Thank you all so much for your help!

Glad you got it sorted out! Just a tip for the future - always pay attention to the recertification dates on your approval notices. Your next recertification will be in 12 months, but you'll need to submit a SAR7 report at the 6-month mark. Missing either one can cause your benefits to stop.

I see this happen ALL THE TIME. The notices can be confusing. For everyone reading, here's a quick guide: - Regular benefits: Issued between 1st-10th based on case number - SAR7: Due twice a year (6-month intervals) - Recertification: Once per year - Income changes: Must report within 10 days if you go over your Income Reporting Threshold (IRT) The COVID emergency allotments gave everyone the maximum benefit for their household size regardless of income, but that ended in February 2023. Many people are still adjusting to the lower benefit amounts.
