What day of the month do Transitional CalFresh benefits get loaded on EBT cards?
I just got approved for Transitional CalFresh after my CalWORKs case closed last week. The worker mentioned something about benefits being loaded on a specific day each month, but I was dealing with my kids and didn't catch all the details. Does anyone know what day Transitional CalFresh benefits get deposited? Is it different from regular CalFresh? My account is showing $0 right now and I'm trying to figure out when I can go grocery shopping.

Transitional CalFresh benefits are issued on the same schedule as regular CalFresh. In California, benefits are loaded onto your EBT card based on the last digit of your case number. It's sometime between the 1st and 10th of each month, I think.

•Thanks!! I just checked my approval letter and my case number ends in 3. Do you know what day that would be?

CalFresh benefits (including Transitional CalFresh) are always issued according to the last digit of your case number. Here's the schedule: 0-3: 1st of the month 4-6: 2nd of the month 7-9: 3rd of the month So if your case number ends in 3, you should get your benefits on the 1st of each month. Since you said you were just approved, your first issuance might be different - they sometimes do a prorated amount for the first month depending on when you were approved. Check your approval notice for the exact date of your first payment.

•Thank you so much! That makes sense - so I should see my benefits on the 1st of next month. The letter mentions May 1st as my first issuance date so that matches what you said.

•She might be on a different program or in a different county. But standard CalFresh in California (including Transitional CalFresh) follows the 1st-3rd schedule. Maybe she's on a different schedule for some reason, but that's not typical for CalFresh.

I've been on Transitional CalFresh for about 6 months now after my CalWORKs ended, and my benefits always come on the 2nd of each month (my case number ends with 5). Your county worker should have given you this information, but I know how hectic it can be with kids - been there! If you need to reach someone to confirm, I'd recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to a human at the county office. I used to spend hours on hold, but their service connected me in minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8

•Thank you for that tip! I'll check out that service if I need to call them. Good to know your experience matches what the others said about the schedule.

One thing nobody mentioned - if this is your first month on Transitional CalFresh, they might issue benefits on a different date just for the first month. After that, it'll follow the regular schedule based on your case number like everyone says. That happened to me and I was so confused!

•THIS!!! My first month was TOTALLY different and I panicked thinking I wouldn't get anything! Called the county and they said first month is sometimes different then it goes to the regular schedule. Ugh I hate how they don't explain this stuff clearly!!!

Just want to throw in that Transitional CalFresh (TCF) lasts for 5 months after your CalWORKs closes, and you don't have to do any reporting during that time - no SAR 7 or anything. They'll send you a regular CalFresh application toward the end of the 5 months if you want to continue receiving benefits. Lots of people miss this and lose their benefits after the transitional period.

•Oh that's really good to know - I was wondering if I'd need to turn in paperwork. Do they automatically set the benefit amount based on what I was getting before?

•Yes, your TCF benefit amount is usually the same amount you were getting while on CalWORKs, or it might increase if your CalWORKs income was being counted against your CalFresh. It stays the same for the full 5 months regardless of changes in your income or household - that's why it's called "transitional." It's designed to help families who are transitioning off cash aid.

My transitional calfresh was so confusing!! I thought I was supposed to get it the same day as my CalWORKS before but it was different!!! I literally had NO FOOD for my kids for three days because I was counting on it coming the same day!!! The system is broken and nobody explains anything!!!

•That's awful, I'm sorry that happened to you. Did you try calling 211? They can sometimes direct you to emergency food resources when you're in that situation. Food banks can help too while waiting for benefits.

i think ur transitional benifits should be more than regular calfresh too. mine went up $80 when i switched to transitional. they dont count income the same way

•That's correct! Transitional CalFresh often results in higher benefits because they no longer count your earned income against your benefit amount. It's one of the advantages of the program - helping families who are transitioning off cash aid by giving more food benefits during that adjustment period.

Just wanted to add that if you're ever unsure about your benefit schedule or amount, you can also check online through the MyBenefits CalWIN portal or call the EBT customer service line at 1-877-328-9677. They can tell you your next issuance date and current balance without having to wait on hold with the county office. I keep that number saved in my phone because it's been super helpful when I need quick info about my benefits!

•That's such a useful tip! I had no idea about the MyBenefits portal - I've been trying to figure out how to check my balance without going to the store. Is the portal easy to set up? I'm not super tech-savvy but this would save me so much time compared to calling offices.

•The MyBenefits portal is actually pretty straightforward to set up! You just need your case number and some basic info. Once you're logged in, you can see your benefit balance, payment history, and next issuance date all in one place. Way easier than calling and waiting on hold. @Samantha Hall thanks for sharing that tip - I wish someone had told me about this when I first started receiving benefits!

As someone who works with families transitioning off CalWORKs, I can confirm that Transitional CalFresh follows the same issuance schedule as regular CalFresh - benefits are loaded based on the last digit of your case number (0-3 on the 1st, 4-6 on the 2nd, 7-9 on the 3rd). However, your first month might be prorated or issued on a different date depending on when your CalWORKs case closed and when you were approved. Since your case number ends in 3, you should expect benefits on the 1st of each month going forward. One thing to keep in mind is that Transitional CalFresh often provides higher benefit amounts than what you received while on CalWORKs because they don't count earned income the same way. The program lasts for 5 months with no reporting requirements, which gives families time to stabilize after leaving cash aid. If you need to verify your exact issuance date or benefit amount, the MyBenefits CalWIN portal is really helpful for checking this info without having to call and wait on hold.

•This is incredibly helpful information, thank you! It's reassuring to hear from someone who works directly with families in this situation. I was getting a bit worried seeing some conflicting information in the thread, but this clears everything up. My approval letter does show May 1st as my first issuance date, so that matches exactly what you're saying about the 1st of the month schedule for case numbers ending in 3. I'm definitely going to check out that MyBenefits portal too - it sounds like it'll save me a lot of stress trying to track everything. Really appreciate you taking the time to explain all the details about how the program works!
