Summer P-EBT cards for kids showing $420 balance - is this the 2025 amount?

Just got a letter saying my kids qualified for the Summer P-EBT program. The letter mentioned a white P-EBT card would arrive with benefits, but I haven't received it yet. My neighbor showed me hers that just came yesterday - it has a 4.0 at the end of the card number and had $420 loaded on it. Is this what everyone's getting for Summer 2025? Also, is it supposed to be a white card? Our regular CalFresh EBT card is the gold/yellow one, so just making sure this summer one is legitimate. Anyone else get theirs yet?

got mine yesterday!!! white card, says P-EBT on it. my 2 kids got $420 each so total $840. the card number does end in 4.0 - i think thats just how they number these summer ones to tell them apart from the reg school year ones?

Thanks for confirming! Did you have to activate it differently than the regular EBT card? I'm still waiting for mine to arrive.

Yes, the Summer P-EBT benefits for 2025 are $420 per eligible child. The white card is correct - it's different from your regular CalFresh EBT card because P-EBT is administered through a separate program even though the benefits work similarly. The cards ending in 4.0 are specifically for this summer distribution cycle. You need to activate it when it arrives by calling the number on the back of the card. Keep in mind that Summer P-EBT benefits are being distributed on a rolling basis through August, so don't worry if yours hasn't arrived yet.

so we keep the card after using the benefits? or do they expire? my kids got these last year but i think we threw the cards away after spending

Definitely keep the P-EBT cards! If your children qualify for future P-EBT benefits, they'll be loaded onto the same card. The benefits themselves will expire after one year from issuance date, but the card remains valid for future distributions.

Is anyone else SUPER CONFUSED about who actually qualifies for these Summer P-EBT cards??? My neighbor got one for her kid but I didn't get any for my 3 kids even though we're on CalFresh too! Called the county office EIGHT TIMES and kept getting disconnected or stuck on hold forever. So frustrating not being able to talk to a real person about this!!

I was having the same problem trying to reach someone about my missing P-EBT card. After getting disconnected 5 times, I tried using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to a real person at the CalFresh office. Their service called for me and got me connected to a live worker in about 20 minutes instead of waiting on hold for hours. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. The worker explained that P-EBT eligibility is determined by the school district, not just CalFresh status. Your kids need to be enrolled in free/reduced lunch at a school that participates in the National School Lunch Program.

To clarify some confusion I'm seeing here - Summer P-EBT 2025 benefits are $420 per eligible child as part of the permanent Summer EBT program that was established after the pandemic. Eligibility is determined through school free/reduced lunch enrollment or direct certification through CalFresh/CalWORKs, but there are some exceptions. The white cards with 4.0 at the end are indeed the correct cards for this distribution cycle. A few important points: 1. Cards are being mailed in batches through August 2025 2. Benefits remain available for 12 months from issuance 3. You must keep the P-EBT card for future distributions 4. Activation requires calling the number on the back and setting a PIN 5. These benefits are separate from regular CalFresh and don't affect your normal benefit amount If you believe your child should qualify but haven't received a card by mid-August, you should contact the P-EBT helpline directly rather than your regular CalFresh office.

Thank you for explaining all this! What's the direct P-EBT helpline number? Is that different from the regular CalFresh customer service?

Yes, the P-EBT helpline (877-328-9677) is separate from the regular CalFresh customer service. Keep in mind it can be extremely busy, especially when new card batches are sent out. The best times to call are early morning right when they open or late afternoon before closing.

Wait I'm confused - is this Summer P-EBT the same as CalFresh? My kids get free lunch at school but we don't have CalFresh (we applied but made like $50 too much or something ridiculous). Will they still get these P-EBT cards??

P-EBT and CalFresh are different programs, though they both provide food benefits. If your children qualify for free/reduced lunch at school, they should be eligible for Summer P-EBT even if your household doesn't receive regular CalFresh benefits. The eligibility is tied to the school meal program participation, not your CalFresh status. You should receive cards if they're enrolled in the free/reduced lunch program at a participating school.

I experienced something strange with the Summer P-EBT last year that might happen again this year. We received a card for my older child who was in elementary school, but my preschooler didn't get one initially even though both qualified. After calling multiple times, I learned that different age groups and schools are processed in separate batches. My preschooler's card came almost 3 weeks later. The important thing is documenting when you received each card because the benefits expire exactly 365 days from when they're loaded, not when you activate the card.

wait they expire??? i thought just had to spend by end of summer!

Update: Our P-EBT cards just arrived today! White cards with 4.0 at the end for both kids, $420 each just like everyone mentioned. Already called and activated them. Thanks everyone for the helpful information!
