P-EBT amounts for child born in 2021 - first time recipient with existing CalFresh benefits

Hi there! I'm a bit confused about P-EBT benefits for my situation. My son was born in 2021 and we've had CalFresh continuously since then, but this is our first time getting P-EBT. The notification letter was super vague. Does anyone know how much we should expect to receive? Is it going to be a one-time lump sum payment, or will it be broken down by each month we were on CalFresh? The P-EBT website is frustratingly unclear about the specifics for children born after the pandemic started. Anyone have experience with this or know where I can find the exact benefit amounts for 2025? Thanks in advance - this group has seriously been a lifesaver for navigating these benefits!

P-EBT for 2025 is based on the months your child qualified during the previous school year. Since your son was born in 2021, he would've been eligible starting when he was enrolled in school/childcare program while receiving CalFresh. The current benefit is $140 per eligible month, typically delivered in a lump sum on your P-EBT card. If you haven't received a P-EBT card yet, it should arrive separately from your regular EBT card. Hope that helps!

Thanks for this info! He started preschool last September, so I guess that means we'd get $140 for each month since then? Do they count summer months too if we had CalFresh the whole time?

my daughter was born in 2020 and we just got her p-ebt last month. it was a lump sum of $980 covering 7 months. they didnt tell us which months counted tho. card came in mail separately from regular ebt and had her name on it not mine

Oh that's helpful to know! Did you have to activate it differently than the regular EBT card? $980 would be amazing - we could really use that right now.

For children born in 2021, P-EBT eligibility begins once they're enrolled in a qualifying school or childcare program while the household receives CalFresh. The 2025 P-EBT program provides $140 per eligible month, typically as a single lump-sum payment. The specific months covered are: - All months of school/childcare attendance between September 2024-May 2025 if you had active CalFresh - Summer 2024 benefits (June-August) IF you were receiving CalFresh in May 2024 You should receive a P-EBT card in your child's name. The PIN setup process is different from regular EBT - you'll need your child's date of birth and the last 4 digits of their case number (which should be on the letter you received).

This is SO helpful, thank you! We did have CalFresh last May, so it sounds like we might get summer months too. That would be amazing. I'll keep an eye out for the card in his name.

When I called about my son's P-EBT (similar situation), I just got disconnected FIVE TIMES. So frustrating!!! Then I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual person at the P-EBT office in like 15 min. They have a demo video if you want to see how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. The lady I spoke with confirmed exactly which months were covered for my kindergartener and when to expect the card. Totally worth it because the website is useless for specific situations like ours.

Does that service actually work? I keep getting disconnected too when calling about my P-EBT questions. Might try this if it saves me from wasting another afternoon on hold.

@SoccerMom528 Yes! It seriously worked for me. I was skeptical too but after spending 3 days trying to get through myself, it was worth it. The P-EBT office confirmed my son's card was already sent out but got lost in the mail, so they're sending a replacement.

i tried calling like 20 times before giving up lol. the p-ebt system is such a mess compared to regular calfresh

Dont forget you gotta spend the p-ebt within like a year i think or the benefits expire!!! My sister lost like $300 cuz she didnt know and just set the card aside

Oh wow, I had no idea they expire! Thanks for the heads up - definitely don't want to lose any benefits. I'll make sure we use them.

Just to clarify a common confusion - P-EBT benefits don't expire after a year of issuance like some think. It's 274 days of inactivity that triggers expiration. So as long as you use the card at least once every 9 months, your benefits will remain. And since your child was born in 2021, they'll qualify for the full school-year amount if they're in a qualifying program now. The P-EBT amount for 2025 was increased to $140/month from the previous $123/month to account for inflation in food costs.

Thank you for this correction! That's a relief about the expiration timeline. And good to know about the increase to $140/month - every bit helps with how expensive groceries have gotten.
