How to check CalFresh benefits for kids with last name starting with B in LA County?

My ex has custody of our kids (their last name starts with B) but they're stayin with me this summer. I'm supposed to get CalFresh benefits for them while they're here, but I don't see anything on my EBT card yet. Someone at the office said LA County loads benefits on different days depending on last name? Is that true? How do I check when their benefits should be loaded or if they're even coming? Already called the EBT customer service but was on hold forever before getting disconnected.

ya LA county loads benefits on different days based on case number not last name tho. u can check ur balance by calling the EBT number on back of card or using the app. but if ur ex has custody they might still be on their case not urs, did u already report the change to ur worker?

I thought i did? Had a phone appt back in May where I told them kids were coming for summer. The worker said she'd update my case. Do I need to call again and make sure?

LA County does stagger CalFresh benefit issuance dates based on the last digit of your case number, not the last name. Benefits are issued over the first 10 days of each month. You need to verify a few things: 1. Did your worker officially add the children to YOUR CalFresh case? This requires specific documentation including temporary custody agreements. 2. If the children were added, your benefit amount should have increased. You can check this on the BenefitsCal portal or by reviewing your most recent Notice of Action. 3. If your ex is still receiving benefits for the children while they're with you, that's an issue that needs to be reported to prevent overpayment. I'd recommend contacting your eligibility worker directly to confirm the children were added to your case for the summer months.

Thanks for explaining! I did upload our summer custody agreement through the BenefitsCal site but never got confirmation. I'll try calling again but the wait times are ridiculous.

This happened to my sister too!!! The county never processed her temporary custody paperwork and she had to feed 3 extra kids for a month with no extra benefits!! Then when they finally fixed it they only gave benefits going forward not retroactive!!! The system is BROKEN

This happened to me last year and I discovered you CAN get retroactive benefits if you can prove you submitted the paperwork on time. Your sister should file for a hearing if it was recent!

If you're struggling to get through to LA County DPSS for your CalFresh case, you might want to try Claimyr. It's a service that helps you skip the hold times when calling county offices. I was in a similar situation last month and used it to finally reach someone about a missing verification issue. They call and wait on hold for you, then connect you once a real person answers. You can see how it works at https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 and their website is claimyr.com. Much better than getting disconnected after waiting an hour.

Never heard of this but definitely gonna try it tomorrow. Getting disconnected after waiting forever is the worst! Did they actually help resolve your issue or just connect you?

They just connect you to a live person at the county office, but that was the hardest part for me. Once I actually got through to a real worker, she was able to fix my verification issue right away. Definitely worth a try if you keep getting disconnected.

check ur case# on benefits cal website. last digit tells u what day benefits load. my son has diff last name than me but on same case so we get benefits same day.

Your question makes me think there's some confusion about how CalFresh benefits work during temporary custody changes. When children move between households (even temporarily like summer visits), there are specific procedures: 1. The custodial parent (your ex) should report to their worker that the children are temporarily absent 2. You need to apply for the children or report them as additions to your existing case 3. You need documentation showing they'll be with you and for how long Benefits are issued based on case number (last digit determines day of month), not by last name. If you're already approved and the children have been added to your case, check your Notice of Action for the specific benefit amount and issuance date. If you haven't received a Notice of Action confirming the children were added, there might be a problem with your case update. Did you receive any verification requests?

I got something in the mail asking for the custody agreement which I uploaded through BenefitsCal. But never got anything after that saying they were added. I'll check for the NOA. Thanks for explaining how it works!

dont forget to ask if they'll backdate ur benefits if they messed up! my cousin got 3 months of benefits she shoulda had cuz the worker forgot to process something

I had a similar situation with my nephews visiting for summer. Make sure both cases are properly updated - yours AND your ex's. When my sister didn't report her kids leaving for summer, we both nearly got hit with overpayment notices (which are a nightmare to resolve). Also, in my experience, LA County workers often need multiple follow-ups to make sure changes actually get processed. With the current workload they're handling, things fall through the cracks constantly.

That's really good to know! I'll text my ex to make sure they reported it on their end too. The kids have been here 3 weeks already and I'm stretching my food budget thin.

UPDATE: Based on the conversation so far, it sounds like you need to confirm a few things: 1. Verify the verification documents were received and processed 2. Confirm your case has been updated to include the children 3. Determine your issuance date based on your case number If the county didn't process your documentation, you might be eligible for retroactive benefits through a process called "restoration of lost benefits" once the situation is resolved. Make sure to mention this when you connect with your worker. For LA County specifically, call the Customer Service Center at (866) 613-3777, but be prepared for long wait times. Having your case number, the dates the children have been with you, and any reference numbers from documents you've submitted will help expedite the process.

Thanks for all this info! I found my case number and the last digit is 4, so I think benefits should load on the 4th of the month? I'll definitely ask about restoration of benefits since the kids have been here since June 10th.
