CalFresh approval timeline confusion - approved for less than qualified amount?

Hey CalFresh community, I'm completely new to the benefits system and super confused about the timeline/process. My background: I'm on SSDI and have shared custody of my 3 kids. I submitted my CalFresh application on October 14th, but heard absolutely nothing until getting a letter on October 31st. Called the county office on November 1st and they did my interview right then on the phone (which was unexpected but nice). The worker said our household of 4 would qualify for approximately $700/month or maybe a bit more. I sent them all my ID verification that same morning through BenefitsCal. Fast forward - I received my EBT card in the mail last week (yay!) but when I checked, there's $0 on it (not yay). Thank goodness I didn't load up a shopping cart expecting to pay with it! Called the county again and suddenly I'm told they're "still investigating my kids" and that I'm only approved for $550. Super confused - if I qualified for $700+ why am I only getting $550? And when will ANY money actually show up? EBTedge shows $0 pending. How long does this whole process normally take from application to actual benefits being available? Feeling lost in the system...

First, congrats on getting approved! The timeline varies but typically looks like this: - Application submission to interview: 10-30 days - Interview to decision: 1-7 days if all verification is provided - Approval to EBT card arrival: 5-10 business days - Card arrival to funds loading: 1-3 business days Based on your timeline, you're actually moving pretty normally through the system. The discrepancy in benefit amount is likely because they approved YOU but are still verifying your children's eligibility. Once they verify shared custody arrangement, they should adjust your benefit amount upward. Until then, they're only counting you in the household size. Check your approval letter for the exact date benefits should load - usually it specifies when your monthly issuance date will be going forward. If that date has passed with no benefits, definitely call again.

Thank you so much for breaking that down! The worker never explained that they might approve just me first while verifying the kids. Makes more sense now. My approval letter just says I'm approved but doesn't mention when funds will actually load. I'll give it another couple days and call again if nothing shows up. Really appreciate your help!

they ALWAYS do this!! the county workers tell u one amount then give u something else. happened to me twice. they told me i would get $375 for me and my son last year and then only gave me $289. bureaucratic bs if u ask me.

Did you ever figure out why there was a difference? Did you eventually get the full amount they initially mentioned?

The benefit calculator they use during interviews is just an estimate. Several factors affect the final calculation - deductions, exact income amounts, verification of household members, etc. Your worker probably gave you the maximum possible amount during the interview, but the actual approved amount is often different. As for the timeline question - in my experience, benefits usually load within 3 business days of approval. If they just approved you recently, it might just be processing. Check again tomorrow.

This exactly! I remember my worker told me the estimate was for a "household of 4" but they only verified me at first, then added my kids later. The system is weird like that.

I had a similar situation with the shared custody verification. They need proof that the children live with you at least part time. Did they ask you for any documentation about your custody arrangement? Court papers, a letter from the other parent, school records showing your address for the kids, or anything like that? In my case, they approved me individually first at a lower amount, then once they verified my custody situation (took about 2 weeks), they increased my benefit amount AND gave me retroactive benefits for the difference. If you haven't sent in custody verification, I'd recommend calling and specifically asking what documentation they need for the children. Be prepared with school records, medical records with your address, or custody paperwork.

That makes so much sense! They never specifically asked for custody documents during the interview. I have a court-ordered custody agreement I can submit. Should I wait for them to ask for it or be proactive and send it in? And where would I send/upload it to?

Definitely be proactive! You can upload it through BenefitsCal under the 'Documents' section. Just select 'Proof of Household Composition' as the document type when uploading. Then call your worker to let them know you've uploaded it. That's what sped things up for me!

Something no one's mentioned - with shared custody, CalFresh has specific rules about which household can claim the children. If your ex is also receiving benefits, they might be sorting out who can claim the kids based on who has them more than 50% of the time. If it's exactly 50/50, they sometimes go by who claims them on taxes first. I'd call the county to specifically ask about the custody situation and what verification they need. You might need to provide your custody schedule to prove the kids are with you at least 50% of the time.

I hadn't thought of that possibility. My ex doesn't receive any benefits that I'm aware of. We have a 50/50 legal arrangement but the kids are with me about 65% of the time in practice. I'll definitely call and ask specifically about this. Thanks!

If you're having trouble getting through on the phone, try Claimyr.com - it holds your place in line and calls you back when a worker is available. Saved me hours of waiting on hold when I had a similar issue with my kids not being counted correctly. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. Totally worth checking out if you need to make multiple calls to sort this out.

For shared custody does the other parent get SNAP benefits to? Cuz they can only count the kids on one case at a time

Not that I know of. My ex has a pretty good job and probably wouldn't qualify. But that's a good point - maybe they're verifying this somehow?

Just to address the benefit amount discrepancy more specifically: For 2025, approximate CalFresh monthly maximums are: - Household of 1: $550 - Household of 4: $750 So it looks like they initially calculated you as a household of 4 (you + 3 kids) during the interview, which would be around $700-750 depending on deductions. But then they've temporarily approved you as a household of 1 while verifying the children, which matches the $550 amount they're now showing. This is actually standard procedure when they need additional verification for some household members. Once they confirm your custody arrangement, they should update your benefits to the full household amount AND provide any retroactive benefits you were entitled to. One tip: when you call, specifically ask for your case to be "expedited for household composition verification" which can sometimes speed things up.

That's exactly what's happening then! $550 for just me and around $750 once they add the kids. Thank you for explaining it so clearly. I'll use that exact phrasing when I call tomorrow: "expedited for household composition verification." Really appreciate everyone's help here!
