Emergency food before CalFresh benefits load - need LA/Pasadena food banks open after 5pm
Running on empty until my CalFresh loads this weekend! I'm in a tight spot right now - my EBT benefits don't reload until Saturday, but my pantry is completely bare and I need to feed my family tonight and tomorrow. I have four kids who are ALWAYS hungry when I get home! Currently doing an unpaid internship as part of my degree program (they've promised to hire me full-time once I graduate next month), so money is extremely tight right now. Does anyone know of any food banks or emergency food distribution sites in the Los Angeles/Pasadena area that are open AFTER 5pm? I can't leave my internship early, and most places I've found online close at 3 or 4pm. Any suggestions for evening hours food assistance would be a lifesaver! Literally just need enough to bridge us until Saturday when my benefits hit my EBT card.

Call 211! They can direct you to emergency food resources open in the evening. For Pasadena specifically, Friends In Deed Food Pantry stays open until 6pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Also try All Saints Church in Pasadena - they sometimes have evening distribution. The LA Regional Food Bank has a mobile pantry program with some evening hours too. If you're really in a bind, most county DPSS offices keep emergency food boxes for situations exactly like yours. You can go to your local CalFresh office tomorrow morning and explain your situation - they should be able to provide emergency assistance even before your regular benefits load.

•Thank you so much! I'll try Friends In Deed tomorrow since it's Tuesday. I actually didn't think about going to the DPSS office - would I need to bring anything specific to qualify for an emergency food box? And would it be the same office where I applied for CalFresh?

•Thanks for the heads up about the crowds! Unfortunately I can't get there right when they open because of my internship schedule, but maybe I can try to leave a little early tomorrow. I'll look up the Foothill Unity Center too!

I've been in your exact situation before! In addition to what others mentioned, check out SOVA Community Food & Resource Program - they have a pantry in Van Nuys that's open until 7:30pm on Tuesdays. It's a bit of a drive from Pasadena but worth it in an emergency. Also, for future reference, you can request an expedited issuance of your CalFresh benefits if you're in an emergency situation with little/no food. If your income and resources are low enough, they're required to provide benefits within 3 days instead of the normal 30-day processing time. Just something to remember if this happens again.

•The expedited services is a JOKE!! I tried that when I was starving last year and they still made me wait 10 days even though they're supposed to do 3 days. They always find some excuse like "we need one more document" to delay it. The whole system is designed to make people suffer.

I've been through the emergency food situation too many times with CalFresh gaps. One hack that saved me: some grocery stores like Food 4 Less will let you use your CalFresh card at midnight on the day benefits are supposed to load (so Friday at midnight instead of waiting for Saturday morning). Also, if you need to reach someone at the DPSS office about emergency assistance but can't get through on their regular line, try using Claimyr (claimyr.com). It's a service that helps you get through to a real CalFresh worker instead of being stuck on hold forever. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. Saved me hours of frustration when I needed emergency help last year.

•Wow, I had no idea about the midnight trick! I'll definitely try that Friday night. And thanks for the Claimyr suggestion - I've wasted so much time on hold with DPSS before. I'll check it out if I need to call them about emergency assistance.

Catholic Charities has emergency food assistance and they're usually open until 6pm. They don't ask about your religion or anything. Also check with Shepherd's Pantry in Glendora, they're open Thursday evenings until 7:30pm. Just wondering tho... if ur getting CalFresh on Saturday why don't u have food now? Did they reduce ur benefits or something? My caseworker told me benefits are supposed to last the whole month. Not judging! Just wondering if you should ask for an increase if it's not enough for your family size.

•Thanks for the Catholic Charities suggestion! Will definitely try there. To answer your question - we normally make it through the month, but my oldest two kids had friends stay over last weekend (unexpected) and they went through our remaining food way faster than planned. Plus prices keep going up but my benefit amount stays the same. We get $1,020/month for 5 people which sounds like a lot but with four growing kids it goes really fast. I've tried asking about an increase but was told that's the maximum for our household size.

•Oh yea teenagers eat SO MUCH! My nephew stays with us sometimes and omg he eats more than my whole family combined lol. That makes sense. Good luck!

Just following up - were you able to find food assistance? If you're still struggling, you could try Union Station Homeless Services in Pasadena. They provide meals and I believe dinner is served around 6pm. You don't have to be homeless to access their services.

•Thank you for checking back! I was able to go to Friends In Deed yesterday and got enough to get us through until Saturday. They were really nice and didn't make me feel bad about needing help. I'm going to start putting aside a small emergency food stash for the future so this doesn't happen again. Thanks everyone for all the suggestions!
