CalFresh eligibility ended after DWS found 'unreported mine income' - completely false!

I'm at my absolute breaking point with LA County DPSS. After 8 months on CalFresh, I just got a notice saying I'm DISQUALIFIED because they claim I have 'unreported income from mining operations'?!? I've NEVER worked in mining - I'm a part-time caregiver! The letter says they got 'employment verification from CA Workforce Development' showing I earned $2,800/month from 'Sunrise Mining LLC' starting January 2025. THIS IS 100% FALSE. I've called DPSS 14 times this week and keep getting disconnected or told to 'call back later'. My benefits stop in 10 days and we literally cannot afford food without them. Has anyone dealt with this kind of identity mix-up before? How do I prove I DON'T work somewhere? This feels like I'm being punished for someone else's data error!

This actually happens more than you'd think. There was likely a mix-up in employment verification databases or someone with a similar name/SSN got their info crossed with yours. You need to request an Administrative Hearing IMMEDIATELY - you only have 90 days from the notice date to appeal. Call and specifically request the 'verification documentation' they received and ask for a 'Conditional Withdrawal of Action' while they investigate. Also file a Written Statement of Facts (WS 14) form explaining this is an error.

OMG thank you for actually taking me seriously! The notice came 8 days ago so I still have time. What's insane is the letter says I need to repay $450 for 'fraudulent benefits' for January... I'll request that hearing right away. Do you know if I should also contact this Workforce Development place directly? I've never even heard of them before.

2 MONTHS?? We can't wait that long... my kids are on reduced lunch at school and we're already stretching everything so thin. Did your cousin still get benefits during those 2 months or did they cut him off completely?

Request a hearing right away by calling the number on your Notice of Action. Ask specifically for 'aid paid pending' while your appeal is processed - you're entitled to continue receiving benefits during the appeal if you request it within 10 days of receiving the notice. You'll need to gather evidence. Get: 1. Your pay stubs from your actual job 2. A letter from your employer confirming employment dates 3. Bank statements showing no deposits from mining companies 4. Your most recent tax return If you're having trouble getting through on the phone, try Claimyr.com - it's a service that calls CalFresh for you and connects you when a real person answers. Saved me hours of hold time when I had a verification issue. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8

THANK YOU for telling me about aid paid pending - the notice didn't mention that at all! I'm going to try that Claimyr service right now because I'm desperate. I have all those documents ready except the employer letter, but I can get that by tomorrow. This is just so stressful because I've never even heard of this mining company and I feel like I'm being accused of lying.

THE EXCT SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME!!!!! But mine said I was working at some shipping company making $3500/month when I was actually unemployed! I had to go physically to the DPSS office with ALL my documents because nobody would help me over the phone. Bring EVERYTHING - ID, SS card, birth certificate, pay stubs, bank statements, tax forms, everything!!! They treated me like a criminal until I literally broke down crying at the office. So messed up!!!!

this is why i tell everyone to KEEP COPIES OF EVERYTHING you ever submit to calfresh.... they are so quick to accuse people of fraud but its usually their own system thats messed up

did u check ur credit report? sometimes this kind of thing means some1 stole ur identity... might wanna freeze ur credit just in case

Oh god I didn't even think of that. I'm going to check it right now. But wouldn't I see actual payments or tax forms if someone was working under my identity? I haven't gotten any weird mail or tax documents.

not always... sometimes the paperwork goes to a different address if they changed it with the employer. def worth checking

I've worked for EDD before (different but similar database systems). These database errors happen when information gets entered under the wrong SSN or when two people have similar names/details. You need to file form CW 2200 (Request for Income and Eligibility Verification) which gives you the right to see exactly what information they're using against you. State clearly in your hearing request that you suspect a data match error.

Thank you! I had no idea about the CW 2200 form. Just looked it up and will fill it out tonight. Do you know how long they typically take to provide that information once requested?

They're supposed to respond within 10 business days, but it often takes longer. Make sure to emphasize that your benefits are being terminated based on this information, which should expedite the process. Keep a copy of everything you submit.

Update us on what happens! I've seen these database errors get resolved but it takes persistence. One tip from my experience - when you go to your hearing (if it gets that far), bring a complete written timeline of events including all your attempts to contact them. Makes a huge difference to the hearing officer when they see you've been diligently trying to resolve it.

I'm keeping a detailed log now of every call, the times, who I spoke with if I get through. I tried that Claimyr service another commenter suggested and finally got through to someone! They've put a 'urgent research request' on my case and are supposed to call me back in 48 hours. The worker admitted their system has been having problems with employment verification lately!

Sounds exactly like what happened to my neighbor! It was so stressful for her family. The county had mixed up her records with someone who had a similar name. It took weeks of phone calls and paperwork to sort out. In the meantime, she applied for emergency food assistance through local food banks which helped a bit. Don't give up!

Thanks for the support. Just curious - did your neighbor end up getting retroactive benefits for the time she was wrongly cut off? I'm trying to figure out how to budget for potentially months without our CalFresh benefits.

Yes, they did give her all the back benefits once it was resolved! They loaded it all at once on her EBT card. It was a huge relief for her family. Just make sure you keep detailed records of everything.
