CalFresh benefits transferred to new county - can't see balance on EBT provider app

Hey everyone! I recently moved from Sacramento County to Alameda County and my CalFresh benefits just transferred over. The county worker told me everything was processed but I can't figure out how to see my new balance on the provider app. I've tried logging in with my same credentials but it still shows my old county info with $0 balance. Did I miss a step or is there a waiting period before the app updates? Really need to buy groceries this weekend and don't want to be embarrassed at checkout if there's no money on my card. Any help appreciated!

u have 2 call the number on back of ur ebt card first & check ur balance that way. sometimes the app takes 3-4 days to update after county transfer. ur benefits should still be there even if app not showing them

Thanks! I'll try calling the number. Do you know if I need to download a different provider app for the new county or will the same one eventually update?

When your CalFresh case transfers between counties, there are a few things that happen with the EBT card and app that can be confusing. Here's what you need to know: 1. Your physical EBT card will still work - the benefits are loaded onto the same card regardless of which county manages your case 2. The app sometimes takes 3-7 business days to fully update after an inter-county transfer (ICT) is completed 3. You don't need a different provider app - California uses the same EBT system statewide 4. The phone number on the back of your card (1-877-328-9677) will always have the most up-to-date balance information 5. If you've received your first benefit issuance from the new county, it should already be available on your card even if the app isn't showing it I recommend calling the number on your card first to check the actual balance. If there's a discrepancy between what the county told you and your available balance, you'll need to contact your new county worker directly.

Thank you so much for the detailed info! I called the number and my balance is there ($345 for February), just not showing in the app yet. Such a relief!

Had the same problem when I moved from LA to San Diego. The app was still showing my old county for like 2 weeks! But my benefits were actually on my card the whole time. The phone number is the best way to check like others said. Also, sometimes logging completely out of the app and redownloading it helps, but not always.

this is why the ebt system is so frustrating!!! why cant they just have ONE working app that updates properly?? i had same issue moving counties and missed a whole month of benefits because nobody told me they were actually on my card!! the worker just said "it transferred" but app showed ZERO

I work with a lot of clients who move between counties, and this is a very common issue with the EBT app. The app update delay is caused by the inter-county transfer (ICT) process where your case information needs to be fully processed in the new county's system before the app recognizes the change. If you're having trouble reaching someone at your new county office to confirm everything transferred correctly, you might want to try Claimyr (claimyr.com). They help you skip the hold times when calling county offices. They have a good video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 In the meantime, definitely use the phone number on your card to check your balance before shopping. That's always the most reliable method regardless of which county you're in.

Thank you for the tip! I might need that service if I run into issues. My benefits are showing on the card when I called, but I'm due for my SAR7 next month and I'm worried about delays with the new county.

OMG THE SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME!!! When I moved from Riverside to San Bernardino it took FOREVER for the app to update!!! But my money was on the card the whole time! The worst part is I was afraid to use it because I thought I had $0!!! I almost didn't buy food that week!!! TRY THIS: Delete the app completely and then reinstall it. Then wait 24 hours and try again. That finally worked for me but it still took like 10 days total. ALSO make sure your address is updated with the new county or they might send your next recertification paperwork to your old address and then discontinue your benefits!!

good point abt the address! they send EVERYTHING by mail & if u miss recertification paperwork ur benefits stop immediately

You need to also check if your semi-annual report (SAR7) or recertification dates changed with the transfer. Sometimes when they do the ICT (inter-county transfer), they reset your reporting timeline. This has happened to me twice when moving counties, and I ended up with a gap in benefits because I missed a SAR7 deadline I didn't know about. The app issue should resolve itself, but I'd call your new county worker to confirm when your next report is due just to be safe.

That's a really good point! I'll definitely check about my reporting dates. My SAR7 was due next month in my old county but I should find out if that changed.

the whole system is ridiculous. they make everything so complicated on purpose. i bet if you were getting TOO MUCH benefits they would fix that real quick but when it's their mistake suddenly it takes weeks to fix. try calling your old county too sometimes they still have access to your case even after transfer and can see things the new county can't

Just to clarify some information about the inter-county transfer process since there seems to be some confusion: 1. Your certification period (the 12-month period you're approved for) stays the same when you transfer counties 2. Your SAR7 due date also remains the same 3. Your benefit amount might change if your new county has different utility allowances or if your rent changed with the move 4. The physical transfer of your case data between county systems can take up to 30 days, but your benefits should continue without interruption If it's been more than 7 business days since your transfer was processed and the app still isn't showing your correct information, you should contact your new county worker directly. The EBT customer service line (the number on your card) can only confirm your balance - they can't fix issues with the transfer itself.

Thank you for all this information! It's been 5 business days since my transfer completed, so I'll give it a couple more days for the app to update. At least I can access my benefits by using the card, which is what matters most.

I went through this exact same situation last year when I moved from Fresno to Kern County! The app confusion is so stressful when you're trying to budget for groceries. One thing that really helped me was writing down the phone number from the back of my EBT card and keeping it in my phone contacts as "EBT Balance Check" so I could quickly call anytime I needed to verify my balance while the app was being weird. Also, pro tip - if you're shopping and want to be extra sure about your balance before checkout, most grocery stores will let you do a balance inquiry at the card reader before you start shopping. Just select "EBT" and then "Balance Inquiry" instead of payment. That way you know exactly what you have to spend without any surprises at the register! The app will eventually catch up, but in the meantime the phone system and balance inquiry at stores are your best friends. Hang in there!

This is such great advice! I never thought about doing a balance inquiry at the store first - that would definitely save me from any awkward moments at checkout. I'm definitely adding that EBT number to my contacts too. It's so helpful to hear from someone who went through the same thing. Makes me feel less alone in dealing with all this confusion! Thank you for the practical tips.

This is such a common issue and it's frustrating how little guidance they give you about what to expect during the transfer process! I went through something similar when I moved from Orange County to Ventura County last fall. One thing I learned is that even though your benefits transfer over, sometimes your PIN might get reset during the process (happened to my neighbor). If you have any issues using your card after confirming your balance is there, you might need to call and reset your PIN. The customer service rep can walk you through it over the phone. Also, keep all your paperwork from both counties during the transition period! I had to prove my transfer date later when there was a mix-up with my recertification notice. Having those documents saved me a lot of headaches. Glad to hear you were able to confirm your benefits are actually on your card! The phone system really is more reliable than the app, especially during transfers.
