CalFresh P-EBT card for 2nd grader showing only $120 - Will it reload monthly?
I just received my daughter's P-EBT card in the mail today (we're in Fresno). She's in 2nd grade and her name starts with I. The card only has $120 on it, which seems really low compared to what I've heard others getting. Is this just the first payment? Will it reload every month automatically or is this a one-time payment for the whole school year? I'm confused because I thought these cards were supposed to have more funds. Anyone else in Fresno with elementary school kids receive their cards recently?

That $120 is just for the first payment period. The P-EBT benefits for 2025 are being issued in multiple payments depending on which school district your child attends. Fresno Unified is doing staggered distributions. Since your daughter is in 2nd grade, you should see another reload in about 3-4 weeks, and then monthly after that. My son is in 3rd grade and we got $120 initial payment too, then it went up to $195/month after that.

•Oh thank you! That's such a relief. I was worried something went wrong with her card. Do I need to do anything to activate the reloads or will they just happen automatically?

I think you might be confusing regular CalFresh with the P-EBT program. They're separate things. P-EBT is specifically for school kids and the amount depends on how many school days they qualify for. The $120 might be all you get if your school doesn't participate fully in the free lunch program. You should call the P-EBT hotline to confirm your specific situation.

•I did activate the card already but wasn't sure if that was enough. The letter that came with it was really vague about future payments. I'll try calling the hotline, but I've heard it's impossible to get through.

•The previous comment is incorrect - P-EBT 2025 benefits ARE being issued in multiple payments. The $120 is just the first installment. The amount depends on your child's school's NSLP participation and your district's learning model. For most Fresno elementary schools, it should reload monthly as long as your child remains eligible. You don't need to do anything for the reloads - they happen automatically as long as the card is activated.

•Different grades get different amounts sometimes. My nephew got more than my son even though they're at the same school. Something about attendance tracking by grade levels or whatever 🤷♀️

I had the same situation last month! Called that P-EBT hotline number on the back of the card for THREE DAYS straight and never got through - just endless hold or disconnects. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get a callback from an actual person who could help. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. The lady I spoke with confirmed my daughter's card would reload on the 11th of each month with the full monthly amount. First payment is often partial depending on when they processed it. Saved me so much stress not having to keep calling!

•Thanks for the tip! I'll check that site out if I can't get through. Did you have to provide any verification to get the increased monthly amount or did it just happen automatically?

•It just happened automatically! As long as your child is enrolled in a participating school, the system updates on its own. The first month is always weird with the amounts.

There's definitely some confusion here about how P-EBT works in 2025. Let me clarify: 1. P-EBT is separate from regular CalFresh 2. The amount varies based on several factors: - Your child's school's participation in free/reduced lunch - The learning model in place (full in-person, hybrid, etc.) - The number of qualifying school days in each benefit period 3. For most Fresno elementary schools, the first payment is often partial ($120-130) 4. Subsequent payments should be $195-210 per month depending on your specific school 5. Payments typically reload around the same date each month 6. You DO NOT need to do anything except activate the card initially If you want to check your specific benefit schedule, go to ca.p-ebt.org and enter the card number.

•Thank you SO much for this detailed explanation! This helps a lot. I'll check that website to see our schedule. My daughter qualifies for free lunch at school so hopefully that means she'll get the full amount going forward.

BE CAREFUL using that P-EBT website!!1! My sister put her info in and then started getting all these spam texts about her benefits. I think it might be a scam site. The only official way to check is by calling the number on the back of the card.

•The website I mentioned (ca.p-ebt.org) is actually the official California P-EBT portal. It's operated by the California Department of Social Services. Your sister might have entered her information on a different site that looked similar but wasn't legitimate. Always check the URL carefully - official government sites end in .gov

•The difference isn't about Clovis vs Fresno - it's about when your child's card was issued and which benefit periods it included. Some cards issued earlier in the cycle included retroactive benefits, which is why the initial amount was higher. The monthly ongoing amount should be similar for qualifying students regardless of district.

To summarize what others have said: - The $120 is just your first partial payment - Monthly reloads will happen automatically (typically $195-210 for Fresno elementary students) - No action needed except having activated the card initially - Benefit amounts are based on school participation in National School Lunch Program - Payment dates vary by the first letter of the student's name (I is usually around the 11th-13th of each month) You can call the P-EBT hotline at 877-328-9677 to confirm your specific details, but be prepared for long wait times. The information should also be in the material that came with the card.
