CalFresh P-EBT December 2025 summer benefits payment date?

Just wondering if anyone knows when the summer P-EBT benefits are supposed to hit our cards this month? I've been hearing people say we're getting them in December but nobody seems to know the exact date. My kids qualify for free lunch at school so we should be getting it. Really need it for holiday groceries so hoping it comes before Christmas. Has anyone received theirs yet or heard anything official about the payment date?

Thanks! I'm in Sacramento county, wonder if that means early or late in that window. Did they say anything about how much the benefit is supposed to be this time?

I called the P-EBT hotline yesterday and they said benefits are being issued by COUNTY not last name like they did last time. They couldn't tell me which counties go first tho. So annoying!

The summer P-EBT 5.0 benefits for 2025 are being distributed between December 14-27 as mentioned above. This is specifically for the summer benefits covering June-August 2025. The benefit amount is $488 per eligible child (up from $375 last year). Important to note that P-EBT is separate from your regular CalFresh benefits. If you've moved since your last P-EBT issuance, make sure your address is updated through your child's school or the P-EBT portal on the CDSS website to ensure you receive your card. For those new to P-EBT: it's only for children who receive free/reduced school meals. If your child joined the program mid-year, benefits may be prorated based on eligibility months.

This is SO helpful, thank you! I haven't moved but I'm going to double check the P-EBT portal just to make sure my address is correct. $488 is more than I expected, that will really help with groceries this month.

Just to add to the good information above - if you don't receive your P-EBT by December 30th and believe you qualify, you'll need to contact the P-EBT helpline at 877-328-9677. However, calling them can be extremely frustrating as they're overwhelmed during benefit issuance periods. I recently discovered a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to a P-EBT representative after trying for days on my own. They have a system that holds your place in line and calls you back when a representative is available. Saved me hours of being on hold. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 The P-EBT program is running smoother this year than last, but there are always some cards that get lost in the mail or accounts with issues.

Is that service legit? I tried calling the P-EBT line for THREE DAYS last time and kept getting disconnected after waiting an hour each time. Never actually got to talk to anyone. So frustrating!!!!

Yes, it's legitimate. I was skeptical at first too, but it saved me from having to redial constantly. They basically hold your place in the queue and then connect you when a representative is available. The P-EBT line is particularly bad during benefit issuance weeks, so it's worth considering if you're having trouble getting through.

I'm confused - is P-EBT the same as CalFresh? My kids get free lunch at school but we don't get CalFresh benefits because we're slightly over the income limit. Will we still get this summer P-EBT thing in December?

P-EBT and CalFresh are different programs, though both provide food benefits on EBT cards. P-EBT is specifically for families with children who qualify for free or reduced-price school meals. You can receive P-EBT even if your household income is too high for regular CalFresh benefits. If your children receive free or reduced-price school meals through the National School Lunch Program, they should qualify for P-EBT regardless of your household's CalFresh eligibility. The funds would come on a separate P-EBT card, not your regular EBT card (if you have one).

Thank you! That makes sense. My kids definitely get free lunch through their school. I'll watch the mail for a P-EBT card then. I had no idea we could get this benefit!

Does anyone know if we HAVE to activate the card right away? We're going out of town for the holidays on the 18th and I'm worried the card will come while we're gone and then get deactivated or something if we don't use it right away.

You don't have to activate the P-EBT card immediately. The benefits will remain on the card for at least 274 days (about 9 months) from the date of issuance. However, I would recommend activating it within the first month just to ensure everything is working correctly with the card. If you're concerned about mail security while you're away, you might want to have a trusted neighbor check your mail or consider setting up a temporary mail hold with USPS for the dates you'll be gone.

They ALWAYS say benefits are coming and then they get delayed!! Last year they said December for summer benefits but some counties didn't get them until JANUARY!! Don't count on this money for Christmas, I'm just saying. The state LIES about these dates. Why don't they just send everyone's at the same time instead of this county by county mess?? Makes NO SENSE!

Right??!!! The whole system is so frustrating. I'm in Alameda county and we were literally the LAST to get benefits last time. Meanwhile my sister in San Diego got hers two weeks earlier. It's so unfair. They should just pick a date and stick to it!

The county-by-county rollout is actually designed to prevent system overloads. When they tried to release all benefits on the same day in 2023, the EBT system became overwhelmed with transactions, causing widespread outages and card failures. While it can feel unfair if your county is later in the schedule, this staggered approach helps ensure everyone can access and use their benefits without technical problems. The December 14-27 window is more precise than previous years, which is an improvement.

UPDATE: Just got my P-EBT card today (Dec 16th)! I'm in Sacramento County. The letter says $488 per child like someone mentioned above. Just wanted to let everyone know they're definitely going out now!
