I've had some luck using a different approach - try calling the county office directly instead of the main state line. Each county has their own EBT customer service number and they're usually way less busy. You can find your county's specific number on the CA EBT website under "contact us." I got through in like 15 minutes last week doing this vs waiting 2+ hours on the main line. Also pro tip: if you have to leave a voicemail, they actually do call back within 24-48 hours (at least in my county). Hope this helps someone!
I actually had success by calling the EBT customer service line super early - like right at 8am when they open. Set an alarm and call exactly at opening time. Also, when you do get through to the automated system, don't press any numbers right away - just wait in silence for about 30-45 seconds and sometimes it will automatically transfer you to hold for a representative. I know it sounds weird but it's worked for me twice! The key is being patient and persistent. Good luck everyone, this system is definitely frustrating but don't give up! 🤞

Has anyone had luck with the mobile app? I heard they updated it recently but idk if it's any better for reporting income changes.

•I tried it last week. It's a bit better, but still glitchy. Better than being on hold for hours tho!

I've been through this exact same thing! The phone system routing is a nightmare. What helped me was asking the person who answered (even though they were from the wrong state) if they could transfer me to the correct state department or give me a direct number. Sometimes they have internal numbers that bypass the main system. Also, try calling your local county social services office directly - they often have better knowledge of the right numbers to call and can sometimes handle income reporting changes themselves. Don't give up, the system is broken but there are ways around it!
