Alabama UCC filing fees doubled since last year - what's everyone paying now?
Just got quoted $25 for a UCC-1 filing in Alabama and nearly fell off my chair. Last time I filed was about 18 months ago and I swear it was around $15. Did Alabama UCC filing fees really jump this much or am I remembering wrong? We're doing a lot more equipment financing deals now and these costs are adding up fast. Anyone else dealing with higher Alabama filing fees lately? Trying to figure out if I should budget differently for our Q2 filings.

Yeah Alabama definitely raised their UCC filing fees. I think it went from $15 to $25 for UCC-1s sometime last year. UCC-3 amendments are still around $10 though. The Secretary of State website should have the current fee schedule if you want to double-check.

•Thanks for confirming! I was starting to think I was losing my mind. $10 more per filing doesn't sound like much but when you're doing 50+ filings a quarter it really adds up.

•Tell me about it. We had to revise our whole pricing structure because of fee increases across multiple states. Alabama wasn't even the worst one - I think Georgia went up even more.

The fee increase was part of their 2024 budget changes. Most states have been raising UCC fees to cover technology upgrades to their filing systems. At least Alabama's portal is pretty reliable now compared to a few years ago when it was constantly timing out.

•True, their system is much more stable now. I remember having to retry filings multiple times because of server issues. The extra $10 is annoying but if it means fewer rejected filings due to system problems, I guess it's worth it.

•Exactly. Plus their turnaround time improved too. We're usually getting confirmation within a few hours now instead of next-day.

Speaking of Alabama filings, has anyone else been having issues with debtor name formatting lately? I had three UCC-1s rejected last month because of spacing in the business names. The error messages weren't very helpful either.

•Oh man, debtor name issues are the worst. I've started using Certana.ai's document checker before submitting anything. You just upload your UCC-1 PDF and it flags potential name formatting problems before you pay the filing fee. Saved me from at least 4 rejections so far.

•That sounds really useful. Is it expensive to use?

•Actually pretty reasonable. Way cheaper than dealing with rejected filings and having to refile. Plus it catches other stuff too like missing signature blocks or incorrect collateral descriptions.

The $25 fee is definitely accurate. I just filed two UCC-1s yesterday and paid $50 total. What really gets me is that continuation statements are still $25 too - seems like they should be cheaper since it's just extending an existing filing.

•Wait, continuations are $25 in Alabama? That's the same as initial filings? Most states charge less for UCC-3 continuations.

•Yep, same fee structure. UCC-1 initial filing and UCC-3 continuation are both $25. Only amendments and terminations are cheaper at $10 each.

•That's brutal for continuations. We have about 200 Alabama filings that'll need continuation next year. That's $5000 just in filing fees.

Does anyone know if Alabama offers any bulk filing discounts? Some states have reduced fees if you're filing multiple UCC-1s at once.

•I don't think Alabama has bulk discounts. Their fee schedule is pretty straightforward - flat rate per filing regardless of quantity.

•Yeah no bulk discounts that I'm aware of. Georgia has them but Alabama keeps it simple with flat fees.

The fee increase is frustrating but at least Alabama's UCC system is one of the more user-friendly ones. I've dealt with some states where the portal is a nightmare and you're paying more for a worse experience.

•So true. Alabama's search function actually works well too. Try searching UCC records in some other states and it's like pulling teeth.

•The search is decent but I still double-check everything with a third-party tool before finalizing deals. Too many close calls with similar debtor names.

•Smart approach. I use Certana for that too - upload the original UCC-1 and any amendments to make sure everything matches up properly. Caught a debtor name discrepancy that could have voided our security interest.

Just checked the Alabama SOS website and confirmed the current fees: UCC-1 initial filing $25, UCC-3 amendment $10, UCC-3 continuation $25, UCC-3 termination $10. They also charge $1 per page for copies if you need them.

•Thanks for looking that up! The $1 per page for copies is new to me. Good to know for future reference.

•The copy fee has been around for a while but most people don't notice it unless they're requesting certified copies for litigation or something.

For what it's worth, even at $25 Alabama is still cheaper than several other states. I think New York is around $40 now for UCC-1 filings. The trend seems to be upward everywhere.

•New York is definitely more expensive. California too. Alabama's fees are still reasonable compared to the high-cost states.

•True, but when you're used to the old pricing it still stings. We're a small operation so every fee increase hits the bottom line.

Has anyone had luck getting filing fee refunds when the system rejects a UCC-1 for technical reasons? I had one rejected because their server was down during submission but still got charged.

•I've never gotten a refund for technical rejections. Usually you just have to refile and eat the cost. That's why I'm paranoid about double-checking everything before submitting.

•Yeah refunds are pretty rare. I started using document verification tools after losing money on rejected filings. Better to catch errors upfront than pay twice.

•Same here. Certana's verification caught formatting issues that would have definitely caused rejections. Worth every penny to avoid refiling fees.

The $25 fee is what it is, but make sure you're not making any debtor name mistakes that could invalidate your whole security interest. I've seen lenders lose six-figure deals because of sloppy UCC filings that didn't match the loan documents exactly.

•This is so important. A $25 filing fee is nothing compared to losing your secured position because of a name mismatch or missing collateral description.

•Absolutely. We treat every UCC filing like it could end up in court someday. Cross-checking everything against the underlying loan docs is essential.

•That's exactly why automated document checking is so valuable. Upload your loan agreement and UCC-1 together and it flags any inconsistencies immediately. Way better than manual review.
