How to apply for Cal Grant C through FAFSA? Specific form needed?

I just got approved for the Pell Grant on my first FAFSA application (yay!), but now I'm trying to figure out how to apply for the Cal Grant C specifically. The California website says I can apply through FAFSA, but I can't find any special section or form for Cal Grant C on the studentaid.gov site. Is there a specific form I need to complete? Do I need to submit additional documents somewhere? Or does my regular FAFSA application automatically put me in the running for Cal Grant C? This whole financial aid system is so confusing! Any help would be really appreciated!

Good news! You don't need to fill out a separate form on the FAFSA website. To apply for Cal Grant C, you need to: 1. Complete your FAFSA (which you've already done - congrats on the Pell Grant!) 2. Submit a Cal Grant GPA Verification Form through your school or directly to CSAC (California Student Aid Commission) by the March 2nd deadline 3. Indicate your interest in vocational/technical/career education since Cal Grant C is specifically for those programs Your FAFSA automatically makes you eligible, but you MUST have your GPA verification submitted to be considered. Cal Grant C awards up to $2,462 for tuition and $1,094 for books and supplies, so it's definitely worth making sure that form gets in!

Thank you!!! This is super helpful. I had no idea about the GPA verification form - where do I find that? Does my community college send it automatically or do I need to request it? And is the March 2nd deadline for next year or is there still time for this academic year?

i dont think u need a seprate form for cal grant. when i got mine last yr it just came with my finaincial aid package from my school. check ur school portal maybe?

This isn't entirely accurate. Your school doesn't automatically submit your GPA for Cal Grants. Many do as a courtesy, but it's YOUR responsibility to make sure it happens. I learned this the hard way and missed out on $3,500 my first year because I assumed my CC was handling it. For Cal Grant C specifically, you need to be pursuing a vocational program and have your GPA verification in by the deadline.

CSAC's website (not FAFSA) has all the Cal Grant info. When I applied last year they had weird technical issues and a bunch of people's GPA verifications got lost in their system. Make sure you follow up directly with CSAC after your GPA form is submitted to confirm they received it!

Just to add some clarity here: The original FAFSA application is step one for Cal Grants (A, B, or C). The second required step is the GPA Verification Form that must be submitted to the California Student Aid Commission. For Cal Grant C specifically (which focuses on technical/vocational programs): 1. The standard FAFSA gets you in the system 2. GPA Verification is required (2.0 minimum) 3. You must be enrolled in a vocational/career technical program of 4-24 months 4. Priority goes to students pursuing high-demand occupations The website to check your Cal Grant status is mygrantinfo.csac.ca.gov (separate from your FAFSA account

If you're struggling to get through to CSAC about your Cal Grant application status or have questions about the GPA verification process, I'd recommend trying Claimyr. I was stuck in phone queue hell trying to figure out why my Cal Grant C wasn't showing up in my financial aid package. Claimyr got me through to an actual human at CSAC in about 15 minutes instead of the 2+ hours I was looking at. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ and their website is claimyr.com. It was worth it to get clear answers about my Cal Grant status.

One thing nobody has mentioned yet - Cal Grant C specifically requires selecting educational programs that qualify for it. When you filled out your FAFSA, did you indicate you're pursuing a vocational certificate or technical program? If you selected a BA/BS track, you won't qualify for Cal Grant C (though you might qualify for A or B depending on your GPA). This tripped me up initially because I was in a nursing program and didn't realize it qualified as vocational.

Omg I think this might be my problem! I initially selected transfer degree on my application because I was planning to transfer, but now I'm focusing on getting a vocational certificate first. Do I need to update my FAFSA?

To update your program of study for Cal Grant C eligibility: 1. Log into your FAFSA at studentaid.gov 2. Select "Make FAFSA Corrections" 3. Navigate to the school selection section 4. Update your program/degree information to reflect your vocational/technical program 5. Submit the corrected FAFSA 6. IMPORTANT: Also contact CSAC directly at 888-224-7268 to notify them of your program change You should also connect with your school's financial aid office to make sure they update your program type in their system, as they report enrollment information to CSAC.

This is perfect information, thank you SO much! I just made the FAFSA correction and I'll call CSAC tomorrow. Hopefully I haven't missed any deadlines for this year!

One last thing - to check if your specific program qualifies for Cal Grant C, visit the CSAC website and look for their "Priority Career Technical Programs" list. Not every vocational program qualifies - they prioritize high-demand fields like healthcare, information technology, early childhood education, and certain trades. Your financial aid office should be able to confirm if your specific program is eligible.

Thank you! My program is dental assisting, which I think should qualify since it's healthcare related. I just checked my school portal and it looks like they haven't sent my GPA verification yet. Going to the financial aid office first thing tomorrow morning!

Great work figuring all this out! Dental assisting definitely qualifies for Cal Grant C - it's considered a high-demand healthcare program. Just a heads up that even if you missed this year's March 2nd deadline, you can still apply for next academic year. CSAC processes applications year-round, but priority funding goes to those who meet the March deadline. Also, make sure to ask your financial aid office about any state-specific deadlines or additional grants your school might offer for dental assisting students. Some community colleges have partnerships with local dental offices that provide additional funding opportunities!
