FAFSA tax info entry blocked by signature page - Can't find where to add W-2 information

I'm halfway through my 2025-2026 FAFSA and completely stuck. The system is asking me to sign and submit, but I haven't even entered my tax information yet! I swear I've clicked through every section but can't find where to input my W-2 info or 1040 data. Did they change the order this year? Am I missing something obvious? I don't want to sign and submit if it means I can't go back and add my income information. Has anyone else run into this weird issue? It feels like I'm being asked to finalize before I've actually completed the application.

ya this is normal, you sign first then enter tax stuff. they flipped the order this year and its super confusing. just go ahead and sign, you'll get to the tax part next.

Are you sure about this? It feels wrong to sign before entering the financial data. I don't want to submit incomplete information.

The 2025-2026 FAFSA has completely changed their process flow. This is actually by design - you now authenticate and sign first, then proceed to the financial information sections. It can feel counter-intuitive, but this is their new security protocol. Your signature at this stage is just verifying your identity, not certifying the financial data yet. You'll have another certification step after entering all your tax information.

Thank you! That makes sense but it's really confusing. I wish they would have made that clearer on the website. I'll go ahead and sign now.

OMG I HAD THE EXACT SAME ISSUE!!!! spent like 3 hours freaking out thinking i was doing something wrong. the whole process is backwards now and makes NO sense. why would u sign before entering the important stuff??? so stupid.

The new process flow is actually a security improvement. The first signature authenticates your identity, while you'll still need to certify the accuracy of your financial information later. It's different, but once you know the pattern, it's actually more secure.

maybe its more secure but they should EXPLAIN that somewhere!!! not just make us guess. some of us r first gen students with no help figuring this stuff out!!

I've been trying to complete my FAFSA for a week now and kept getting stuck at exactly the same spot. After calling FSA support (took 3 days to get through) they explained that yes, you sign first to verify your identity, THEN you enter all your financial information. After you enter everything, there's a final certification step. Really poor design if you ask me, but at least it's working as intended.

It's crazy that you had to wait 3 days to get this simple clarification! Have you tried using Claimyr to get through to FAFSA support faster? I was in a similar situation with my verification issues and was getting nowhere with the regular phone line. Claimyr got me connected to an agent in about 15 minutes. Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. Definitely worth it when you're stuck on critical deadlines.

Actually, no I hadn't heard of that service before. Would have been nice to know earlier! I'll keep it in mind for next time I'm stuck on something with FAFSA.

So what happens after you sign? Can you still go back and change information if you need to? Like what if I make a mistake entering my tax info after signing? The whole process is really disorienting compared to previous years.

Yes, you can still make corrections even after the first signature. The system will allow you to go back and modify your financial information before the final submission. The only time you can't make changes is after you complete the final certification at the very end of the process. Even then, you can make corrections later through the correction process, but it's more complicated.

This is one of the most significant changes in the 2025-2026 FAFSA. The new process now has you: 1. Create/confirm FSA ID 2. Provide initial signature for identity verification 3. Enter all tax and financial information 4. Review information 5. Final certification The change was made to strengthen identity verification before sensitive financial data is entered. Just continue past the signature and you'll reach the tax information screens. Your SAI calculation will still be based on all the financial information you enter after this step.

Thank you for breaking this down so clearly. I'll stop worrying and just follow the steps. Do you know if this affects the timing of when my SAI gets calculated?

Your SAI will be calculated after you complete the entire process, including all financial information. The change in flow doesn't affect when your SAI is calculated - that still happens after all data is submitted. You should receive your SAI within 3-5 days after final submission, assuming there are no verification flags on your application.

When I was doing my FAFSA I got confused about the same thing! But then my friend told me that this year you sign first then enter all the tax stuff after. Apparently on the old FAFSA you did it the other way around. Just go with it, it'll make sense once you get through that part.

Thanks! Several people have confirmed this now, so I feel better about proceeding. Just thought I was going crazy for a minute!

Just to add some context - this change was part of the FAFSA Simplification Act that's been rolling out in phases. The signature-first approach actually helps prevent identity theft since you're verifying who you are before entering all your sensitive financial data. The Department of Education didn't communicate this change very well though. After you sign, you'll still enter all your tax info from your 1040 and W-2, plus any untaxed income and assets.

So wait, does this mean they'll be pulling our tax info directly from the IRS after we sign? Or do we still have to enter everything manually?

For the 2025-2026 FAFSA, you'll still need to enter some information manually, but the Data Retrieval Tool will import key information directly from the IRS after you authorize it. This happens after the initial identity verification signature. The system will guide you through which parts are manual entry versus automated import.
