FAFSA skipped IRS verification step but sent tax info request email - what gives?
Really confused about my 2025-2026 FAFSA submission. When I was completing the application online, it never asked me to fill out the IRS verification part like it normally does. I just submitted it thinking everything was fine, but then got this email saying 'Based on your consent for the use and disclosure of federal tax information, the U.S. Department of Education's office of Federal Student Aid requested your 2022 federal tax information from the IRS.' Now I'm worried my application is stuck or incomplete? In previous years I always had to manually enter tax info and it verified instantly during the application process. Has anyone else experienced this new process? Is my application actually processing or did I miss something?

Same thing happened to me last week. The new FAFSA is totally different from previous years. From what I understand, they're now pulling tax info directly from the IRS instead of having us manually enter everything. You should be fine as long as you gave consent during the application process.

•Thanks for responding! Did you get any follow-up emails after that initial one? I'm worried because it's been 3 days and I haven't heard anything else. My daughter's school has a March 1st priority deadline for financial aid.

This is actually part of the new FAFSA Simplification Act implementation. The 2025-2026 FAFSA now uses direct data sharing with the IRS rather than manual entry. When you consented to IRS data retrieval during the application, you authorized this automatic process. The email is just confirming that your tax data request was sent to the IRS. You should receive another notification once the data is successfully retrieved and your SAI is calculated. The benefits of this new process include reduced errors and fewer verification flags. The direct data exchange means most applicants won't need to go through additional verification later. Just keep checking your student aid account and email for updates.

•Thank you so much for explaining! So I don't need to do anything else? Just wait for the next notification? Approximately how long does this new process usually take?

•The old system didn't actually work well for many people. About 20% of FAFSA applications were selected for verification, which delayed aid for weeks or months. This new direct data retrieval should reduce verification rates dramatically. It's different, but ultimately should be better for most families.

I've been dealing with the exact same issue! Got that email 2 weeks ago and STILL haven't received my SAI calculation. I've called the FSA helpline every day this week trying to get answers, but I keep getting stuck on hold for hours and then disconnected. So frustrating!!! Has anyone actually had their tax info successfully processed through this new system yet? I'm beginning to think nobody at the Department of Education tested this before rolling it out. My college's financial aid deadline is coming up fast.

•Try using Claimyr to get through to an FSA agent. I was also stuck in the verification limbo and couldn't get through on the phone. Used their service at claimyr.com and got connected to a real agent in about 15 minutes who confirmed my tax info had been received but was still processing. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ that shows how it works. Saved me days of frustration with the phone system.

•Thanks for the tip! I'll check it out. At this point I'll try anything to get some answers. Did they tell you how much longer it would take for your application to finish processing?

Actually you might have a problem... If you never got the IRS verification screen during your application, it sounds like you might have skipped a step. Did you click through all the pages too quickly? I made sure to carefully read each page when I did mine and definitely had to authorize the IRS data retrieval. Maybe try logging back in and see if there's an incomplete section?

•Now I'm worried again! I went back and checked my application status and it says "Processing" with a checkmark next to all sections. But I honestly don't remember specifically authorizing the IRS part. It just seemed to flow from one section to the next automatically.

•Don't worry - the consent for IRS data retrieval is now incorporated directly into the main application flow rather than being a separate obvious step like in previous years. If your application shows all sections complete and is in "Processing" status, you're on the right track. The system is just waiting for the IRS data exchange to complete.

This is normal with the new FAFSA process. The direct data exchange with the IRS can take 7-10 days to complete in some cases. A few things to be aware of: 1. You can check your application status at studentaid.gov to confirm it's in "Processing" status 2. Make sure your email address is correct in your FSA account so you receive all notifications 3. If it's been more than 14 days since submission with no updates, then you might want to contact FSA 4. Some schools have flexibility with their "priority deadlines" when there are FAFSA processing delays The good news is that once your application completes processing, your SAI should be sent automatically to all the schools you listed on your FAFSA. You won't need to take additional steps for that part.

•This is very helpful, thank you. I checked my application status and it does say "Processing" so I guess I just need to be patient. Do you know if there's any way to see if the IRS has successfully sent my tax information yet, or do I just wait for the next email?

ok but why are they making us use 2022 tax info for the 2025-2026 year anyway?? thats like 3 years old by then! my husbands income changed A LOT since 2022! this is so stupid, the whole system is broken

•You're absolutely right that 2022 tax information might not reflect your current financial situation. The good news is that if your family's income has changed significantly since 2022, you can request a financial aid appeal (sometimes called a "professional judgment" or "special circumstances review") directly with your school's financial aid office after you receive your initial aid offer. Be prepared to provide documentation of the income changes.

UPDATE: Just got the email that my FAFSA has been fully processed and my SAI calculation is complete! It took 6 days total from submission to completion. The email says my data was successfully retrieved from the IRS and my information has been sent to the schools I selected. Thanks everyone for your help and advice. For anyone else experiencing this, it seems the new system does work - it just takes some patience!

•Awesome!! Still waiting on mine, been 8 days now. Did you get your SAI score in the email or do you have to log in to see it?

•I had to log in to see the actual SAI number. The email just said it was complete and had been sent to my schools.
