FAFSA approved then got IRS tax info request email - site down for maintenance?
I'm so confused right now! Our FAFSA was fully completed and processed weeks ago. We even received a financial aid offer letter from my daughter's top choice school (with a pretty decent SAI score). But this morning I got this weird email from FAFSA saying: "Based on your consent for the use and disclosure of federal tax information, the U.S. Department of Education's office of Federal Student Aid requested your 2022 federal tax information from the IRS. Watch for additional notifications from FAFSA® regarding the processing of the application." What the heck is going on?? I thought this was all done! And now when I try to log into studentaid.gov to check, the entire site is down for maintenance. Is this normal? Are they re-verifying our info or something? Has anyone else gotten this email AFTER their FAFSA was already processed?

This happened to me too last month! don't worry too much, it's just the system doing an automated verification. sometimes they do random checks even after initial approval. the site goes down for maintenance pretty regularly lately 🙄

•Thanks for the quick response! So this doesn't mean they're going to change our SAI or anything? My daughter's financial aid package was pretty good and I'm terrified they'll suddenly reduce it...

This is actually completely normal for the 2024-2025 FAFSA cycle. With the FAFSA Simplification Act, the Department of Education is now doing direct data sharing with the IRS, so this email is just confirming that they're pulling your tax information directly. It doesn't mean anything is wrong or that your application is being re-reviewed. The timing is a bit unusual since you already received an aid offer, but this could be part of their backend verification process. Nothing to worry about as long as the information you provided matches your tax returns.

•Oh thank goodness. The timing really threw me off since we already got the offer letter. Do you know how long the site is typically down for maintenance? I really want to check my account and make sure everything is still showing as processed correctly.

The maintenance downtime varies but is usually just a few hours. They typically schedule it during overnight hours but sometimes it extends longer, especially if they're implementing system updates related to the new FAFSA process. Regarding your situation - this is part of the new continuous verification system. Even after initial processing, the Department of Education is running periodic verification checks throughout the aid cycle. It's possible this is just a routine data verification that won't affect your SAI or aid package at all. However, if there are discrepancies between the income information you provided and what the IRS shows, you might receive a notification about updates to your application. Have you used the IRS Data Retrieval Tool when you initially submitted the FAFSA?

•Yes, we definitely used the IRS Data Retrieval Tool! That's why I'm confused - all our tax info should already be correct since it came directly from the IRS the first time. I guess I'll just wait until the site is back up and check our status again. Thanks for explaining!

•If you're trying to reach someone at Federal Student Aid, I discovered a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an agent after weeks of failed attempts. The site is claimyr.com and they have a video demo here: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ It basically holds your place in line so you don't have to keep calling back. I used it last week to resolve a verification issue with my son's application and actually got through to a human in about 20 minutes instead of getting disconnected every time.

Just chiming in to say what everyone else is saying - this is normal. DON'T PANIC! The Department of Education is literally doing millions of these verifications because of the new system. They're overwhelmed and things are a bit messy this year. But here's something important you should know - if there is a change to your SAI after this verification, the school is NOT obligated to adjust your financial aid package that they've already offered you. Many schools consider the first aid offer binding, especially if you've already accepted it. The downside is that if your SAI goes DOWN (meaning you'd qualify for MORE aid), the school might not increase your package. The upside is if your SAI goes UP, they likely won't decrease what they've already offered you either.

•That's really helpful info about the aid offers being potentially locked in! We haven't officially accepted the offer yet - we have until May 1st. But my daughter is pretty set on this school. Would you recommend accepting it ASAP before any potential changes happen with this verification thing?

Yes, if you're happy with the offer and your daughter has decided on that school, I would accept it now. Once accepted, the school is much less likely to change the package even if your FAFSA data gets adjusted. Just make sure you read all the fine print in the offer letter - some schools do include language about the offer being contingent on verified FAFSA data.

•Thank you! I'll review the letter again tonight and probably go ahead with accepting it. The FAFSA process has been such a nightmare this year compared to when we did it for our older son three years ago!

ok everyone keeps saying this is normal but MY COUSINS FAFSA got totally rejected after getting one of these emails!!!! they had already gotten a big aid package from State and then after this "verification" their SAI went up by like $8000 and they lost a grant!!!

•That situation is different - it sounds like your cousin's FAFSA had incorrect information that was caught during verification. If you use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool and report all income correctly, verification won't change anything. The only time SAI numbers change dramatically is when there's unreported income or incorrect figures on the original application.

•Thank you! Just checked and our application still shows as processed with the same SAI number. Looks like nothing changed - what a relief! Going to accept the aid offer tomorrow.
