FAFSA IRS Data Transfer status - no confirmation email after weeks?

I'm getting really worried about my FAFSA application for the 2025-2026 year because I don't know if the IRS tax transfer worked. About 3 weeks ago, I got an email saying the Department of Education had requested my tax data from the IRS and to "watch for additional notifications." But I haven't gotten ANY emails since then! Will they actually send another email once they successfully get my tax information? Or am I supposed to just keep checking my FAFSA application? I've logged in several times but don't see any clear indication whether my tax data was successfully transferred or not. The application still shows as "processing" - does that mean they're still waiting on my tax info? Or is something else wrong? I'm getting nervous because my college keeps sending me reminders about completing my financial aid application. How long does this IRS data transfer usually take? Has anyone else experienced this weird silence after the initial email?

same thing happen to me just wait it out

How long did you end up waiting before something changed? I'm getting really anxious about missing deadlines.

The Department of Education doesn't always send a follow-up notification when the IRS data transfer is complete. The best way to confirm is by logging into studentaid.gov and checking your FAFSA status. Look specifically for the "IRS Data Retrieval Tool" section - if it shows "Transferred" or something similar, then your tax information has been successfully imported. If it's still showing as processing after 3+ weeks, you might want to contact Federal Student Aid directly to check if there's an issue with your transfer.

Thank you! I'll check that section again. I must have missed it. I was just looking at the overall status that says "processing" but didn't notice a specific section about the IRS data transfer.

OMG the FAFSA is such a nightmare this year!!! I had the EXACT same problem and after waiting for FIVE WEEKS with no updates, I called and they told me there was a "glitch" with my transfer and I had to manually enter all my tax info!!!! By that point I was already past my school's priority deadline and probably lost out on thousands in institutional aid. The whole system is BROKEN.

This happened to my daughter too. The new FAFSA system has so many bugs. We waited 4 weeks, then finally called and spent 2 hours on hold only to be told we needed to manually enter everything. Wish they would have told us sooner! You might want to call now rather than waiting.

My son's application actually did get a second email when the IRS transfer completed - it took about 10 days though. Maybe check your spam folder?

Good suggestion - I just checked my spam and promotions folders but don't see anything from studentaid.gov other than that first notification. So weird how inconsistent this process seems to be!

If you want to confirm whether your IRS data transfer was successful, you need to log into your FAFSA application and navigate to the tax information section. Look for a status indicator that specifically shows "Transferred Successfully" or something similar. Typically, the transfer process takes 3-7 business days, but with the high volume in the new system, some transfers are taking 2-3 weeks. If it's been more than 3 weeks, there might be an issue that requires attention. When checking your application, here are specific indicators to look for: 1. In the tax information section, look for text stating "Information Transferred from the IRS" 2. Check if your AGI and other tax figures are populated with actual numbers 3. Look for a completion checkmark in the tax information section If you don't see these indicators, I'd recommend contacting Federal Student Aid directly to inquire about the status of your transfer.

Thank you for these specific details! I'll check all these indicators. I think part of my confusion was not knowing exactly what to look for in the application.

i heard the irs transfer is taking forever this year cuz of the new system. my roommate said her brothers took like 5 weeks to go through and nobody told him anything until he called like 10 times. i think they prioritize certain peoples applications based on income or something but idk for sure

This is incorrect. The IRS Data Retrieval Tool doesn't prioritize applications based on income. All requests are processed in the order received, though there can be technical issues that delay some transfers. The Department of Education has acknowledged that the new system is experiencing higher volume and some technical challenges, which is causing longer processing times across the board.

I had this EXACT problem when filling out my daughter's FAFSA last month! I spent THREE DAYS trying to get through to someone at the Federal Student Aid helpline and kept getting disconnected or waiting for hours. Finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an agent in about 20 minutes. They confirmed that our tax info had transferred successfully, but there was a glitch in the notification system. You can see how it works here: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ - saved me tons of time and stress!

Thanks for the suggestion! I've been trying to call them but keep getting disconnected after waiting forever. I'll check this out if I can't get through tomorrow.

I work in a financial aid office, and I can tell you that this issue is extremely common this year. The Department of Education's new FAFSA system is experiencing significant delays with the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. Most students AREN'T receiving follow-up emails confirming successful transfers. Here's what you should do: 1. Log in to your FAFSA and check if your tax information appears populated (you'll see actual numbers in the tax fields) 2. If your SAI (Student Aid Index) calculation has been completed, that's a good sign your tax info was received 3. Contact your school's financial aid office - they can often see on their end if your tax data was successfully imported If after 4 weeks you still see no progress, then you should definitely contact Federal Student Aid directly. The standard processing time has increased from the usual 3-5 days to 2-4 weeks for many applicants this cycle.

Question: If the application is just showing as "processing" does that mean the tax information hasn't been received yet? My daughter's has been like that for weeks.

I just got off the phone with Federal Student Aid about this same issue! Apparently there's a HUGE backlog with the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. The agent told me they've had over 3 million transfer requests since January and they're struggling to process them all. She said if it's been more than 3 weeks, we should manually enter our tax info rather than waiting for the transfer to complete. I'm so frustrated with this whole system!!!

That's really helpful information, thank you! Did they say if manually entering the tax information would cause any issues or delays with processing? I'm wondering if I should just do that instead of waiting longer.

They said manually entering shouldn't cause any additional delays, but you have to be SUPER careful to enter everything exactly as it appears on your tax forms. If there are any discrepancies it could trigger verification which adds MORE delays. But at this point it might be worth the risk rather than waiting indefinitely for the transfer to happen!
