FAFSA submission glitch - student signature missing after parent portion submitted

Ugh, I'm so frustrated! I was helping my daughter complete her 2025-2026 FAFSA last night, and we ran into a weird submission issue. I completed my part as the parent contributor while she was working on her student section simultaneously (on her laptop). When I hit 'submit' on my end, the WHOLE application submitted even though she hadn't finished her part or signed! This morning she got an email saying her FAFSA couldn't be processed because her signature was missing. We can't get help today because of the federal holiday. Has anyone else had this problem? Can she just go back in and add her signature somehow, or do we need to start over? This new FAFSA system seems so buggy compared to last year's version.

same happened with me + my son last week!! so annoying, why would they let it submit without both signatures?? the whole form got kicked back to us

Did you figure out how to fix it? I'm worried about missing priority deadlines at her school.

This is a common issue with the new FAFSA system. Don't worry - you don't need to start over. Your daughter should log into her studentaid.gov account with her FSA ID, go to the FAFSA form section, and she'll see the incomplete application with a notification about the missing signature. There should be an option to review and sign the form. I recommend having her do this ASAP though, as some schools have early priority deadlines for maximum aid consideration.

Thank you so much! I'll have her try this tonight. Do we need to do anything else after she signs it, or will it automatically resubmit?

The system should automatically reprocess after she adds her signature. One thing to check though - make sure she completes any unfinished sections before adding her signature. If she had other incomplete parts, just signing won't fix those issues. Also, I recommend both of you check your email regularly after she signs. You should each receive confirmation emails within 3-5 days that the FAFSA has been successfully processed. If you don't get those emails, log back in to check the status.

Great advice, thank you! I'll make sure she completes anything else that might be missing before signing. Fingers crossed we get those confirmation emails soon.

THE NEW FASFA IS TERRIBLE!!!! My twins are both applying and we've had nothing but problems. One application randomly deleted all our tax info and the other keeps showing errors about "contributor conflicts" whatever that means. We've been trying to call FSA for THREE WEEKS and can't get through to anyone. Schools are asking for the SAI scores and we're still stuck with incomplete applications. This redesign is a disaster!!!

Ugh same, I spent 4 hrs on hold last week before getting disconnected

I had the same submission problem last month. Just to add to what others have said - make sure your daughter logs in with HER FSA ID, not yours. I made that mistake and got really confused because I couldn't see the signature option. The system treats the parent and student sections as separate accounts. Also, when she goes to sign, she'll need to answer those challenge questions again about her identity. Make sure she has her social security card and ID handy.

That's helpful! I was going to try to help her fix it using my login. Glad you mentioned this so we don't waste time.

Try using Claimyr (claimyr.com) if you need to actually speak with someone at Federal Student Aid about this. I was having a similar signature issue that wouldn't resolve through the portal, and after trying to call for days, I used their service and got through to an FSA agent in about 15 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ that shows how it works. The agent was able to reset something on their end that fixed our submission problem immediately.

Does this actually work?? I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point

Yes, it worked for us! The FSA agent explained that sometimes there are backend issues they need to fix, especially with the new system. Much better than waiting on hold for hours.

Update: My daughter was able to log in and add her signature! The system showed her application was incomplete, and there was a button to continue the process. She had to verify some information and then electronically sign. We got an email confirmation that the FAFSA was successfully submitted about an hour later. Thank you all for the help!

Great news! Make sure you both log back in after 3-5 business days to check that your SAI (Student Aid Index) has been calculated. That's the number schools will use to determine her aid package.

Will do! Is the SAI the same as the old EFC number?

Yes, the SAI (Student Aid Index) replaced the EFC (Expected Family Contribution) in the new FAFSA. They're calculated differently, but they serve the same purpose - helping schools determine financial need and aid eligibility.

Thanks for the tip! I'll have her double-check all the questions when she logs in.

This exact same thing happened to us! My son and I were both logged in at the same time working on different sections, and when I submitted the parent portion, it somehow triggered the whole application to submit without his signature. We were so confused when we got that rejection email. Thankfully we were able to fix it by having him log back in with his FSA ID and complete the signature process. The new FAFSA system definitely has some coordination issues when multiple people are working on it simultaneously. For anyone else dealing with this - make sure to coordinate who submits when, or better yet, complete it together on one device to avoid this glitch!

Thanks for sharing this! It's reassuring to know we're not the only ones who ran into this issue. That's a great tip about using one device - we'll definitely do that for any future FAFSA updates or corrections. It's frustrating that the system allows multiple people to be logged in simultaneously but then gets confused about who's submitting what. Hopefully they'll fix this bug in future versions!

Wow, this thread has been super helpful! I'm a high school senior getting ready to fill out my FAFSA with my parents next month, and reading about all these submission glitches is making me nervous but also better prepared. It sounds like the key takeaways are: 1) Don't work on it simultaneously from different devices, 2) Make sure both parent and student complete ALL sections before anyone hits submit, 3) Keep FSA IDs separate and don't mix them up, and 4) Double-check every question including that drug conviction one someone mentioned. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - hopefully by the time I apply they'll have fixed some of these bugs, but at least now I know what to watch out for!
