FAFSA parent signature issue - husband's old Pell grant blocking completion

I'm seriously frustrated with this FAFSA parent signature problem! My daughter sent invites to both me and my husband to complete our parts of her 2025-2026 FAFSA. I finished my section without any issues, but when my husband created his account and logged in, the system is showing his Pell Grant information from nearly 15 years ago instead of giving him the parent contributor section. There's literally NO OPTION for him to complete the parent signature portion that's required for submission. We've tried logging out/in multiple times and even tried different browsers. Has anyone else had this weird issue where old student aid info is preventing parent signatures? We're getting desperate because her school's priority deadline is coming up fast.

This happened to me last month! The system confused my husband as an applicant instead of a parent contributor. Call the FSA helpline and explain the situation - they need to update the account type on their end. Took me 3 tries to get through though :

Thanks for responding! I was worried we were the only ones experiencing this. Did you have to wait on hold forever? I tried calling yesterday and gave up after 45 minutes.

This is a common issue when a parent previously received federal aid themselves. Your husband needs to update his FSA ID profile settings to indicate he's now acting as a parent, not a student. Go to studentaid.gov, click on "Manage FSA ID" then "Edit Personal Information." There should be a section to update his role from student to parent. If that doesn't work, he might need to create a completely new FSA ID with a different email address specifically for parent contributions.

We already tried the role update in his FSA ID settings, but it still won't let him access the parent signature page. It keeps defaulting to showing his ancient aid history. I guess we'll try creating a new FSA ID with another email. This is so frustrating!

We tried Chrome, Firefox, and even Safari on my iPad. Also cleared cache multiple times. Still showing the same issue. Thanks for the suggestion though!

This is actually a specific technical issue in the FAFSA system related to how it handles parent contributors who previously received federal aid themselves. When your husband logs in, the system is incorrectly prioritizing his student profile over his parent contributor role. To fix this: 1. Your husband should call FSA directly at 1-800-433-3243 2. Specifically request they change his user role from "student" to "parent" in the system 3. Explain that he can only see his old Pell Grant information and cannot access the parent signature section 4. They'll need to clear the association between his FSA ID and his old student record This unfortunately requires direct action from a Federal Student Aid agent. I'd recommend trying Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an agent faster - they helped me skip the hold time when I had a similar verification issue. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ showing how it works.

OMG YES this happened to my ex-husband too! He went back to school after our daughter was born so he had both student AND parent status - FSA system completely freaked out. Had to call in and get it fixed manually. The hold times were ridiculous tho.

i bet they're just using this as an excuse to delay processing applications again this year!! first they launch the new system late, then all these "technical issues" that conveniently push everything back. FAFSA is such a disaster this year, my kid's college financial aid office told me they're weeks behind on processing because of all these FSA problems

While I understand your frustration, this specific issue is actually documented in the FSA knowledge base. It's related to the database architecture that doesn't properly separate historical student records from current parent contributor roles. The recent system upgrades were supposed to fix this, but clearly some edge cases still exist. I recommend documenting all your attempts to resolve this for your daughter's financial aid office - they can sometimes process a provisional financial aid package while technical issues are being resolved.

yeah well they've had YEARS to fix these "edge cases" and millions of dollars in funding. my nephew lost a scholarship last year because of fafsa delays. just saying it's suspicious how they always have problems right when deadlines are approaching

UPDATE: We finally got this resolved! Calling the FSA helpline directly was the key. My husband had to have an agent manually update his account status from "student" to "parent" in their system. Once they did that, he was able to log back in and complete the parent signature section. The whole FAFSA has now been submitted. For anyone else facing this issue - be prepared to wait on hold for a while (we used that Claimyr service someone mentioned and it did help get through faster). Make sure you explain that the system is showing old student aid info instead of parent contributor options. They'll need the student's name and some verification info to make the update.

Glad you got it fixed! I'm going to save this thread in case anyone else in my daughter's high school parent group runs into the same problem.

Thanks for updating us with the solution. This is actually becoming more common as more parents who received federal aid themselves are now having children applying for college. The FSA system needs better handling of dual-role users (those who were once students and are now parents).
