FAFSA disaster - wrong Social Security Number for twin, can't correct it now

I'm completely stressed out because I messed up my twins' FAFSA applications. Twin A successfully submitted her application with her correct SSN, but I (as the parent) accidentally entered the wrong SSN in my parent section for her. When we tried to create an account for Twin B, the system wouldn't let us proceed. I'm guessing it's because I used Twin B's SSN for Twin A's parent section? I've tried going back to correct the SSN error in Twin A's application but that section is locked after submission. The automated system keeps redirecting me, and the few times I've reached a support person, I got contradictory answers. One said start over, another said file a correction after processing. Has anyone dealt with this specific SSN mix-up with twins? Do I need to delete Twin A's application entirely and restart both from scratch? I'm worried about missing priority deadlines if I wait too long!

This is fixable! Don't panic or delete anything yet. When you submit initial FAFSA applications with incorrect SSNs, you need to wait for the application to fully process first (usually 3-5 business days), then submit a correction. The parent SSN correction option will become available after processing completes. For Twin B, you'll need to wait until Twin A's application is fully processed and corrected before attempting to create Twin B's account. The system is detecting the duplicate SSN issue now, which is causing the lockout.

Thank you so much! So I should just wait for Twin A's application to process completely before trying to fix it? I've been checking studentaid.gov daily and it still shows "processing" after 4 days. How long should I reasonably wait before getting worried?

I had ALMOST the exact same issue!!! except it was with my son and daughter not twins. The FAFSA system is so incredibly frustrating when it comes to these SSN errors!!!! I tried calling the support line like 15 TIMES and kept getting disconnected or transferred to people who gave different answers. wasted like 3 days of my life on this!!!!

Same. The new FAFSA is such a nightmare compared to previous years. My daughter and I spent 6 hours trying to figure out why her application kept getting rejected.

You don't need to start over. Here's what to do: 1. Wait for Twin A's application to fully process (get the SAI calculation) 2. Once processed, log into studentaid.gov and select "Make FAFSA Corrections" 3. Look for the parent information section to update the SSN 4. Submit the corrected application 5. Wait for the corrected application to process (another 3-5 days) 6. THEN create Twin B's FSA ID and submit their application The system flags duplicate SSNs for security reasons, which is why Twin B can't create an account right now. The good news is that schools understand these kinds of issues happen with the new FAFSA system.

Thank you for breaking it down into steps! Question: will this delay affect Twin A's eligibility for merit scholarships at schools with priority deadlines? She's applied to several schools with Feb 15 deadlines for aid consideration.

try calling the FSA number early in the morning like 8am EST that worked for me got thru in only 20 min instead of hours

I tried that too but still waited 1hr+ and then got disconnected! So frustrating!!!

Last year I had a nightmare with my daughter's FAFSA when I mistyped her birthday. I ended up using Claimyr to get through to an actual person at FSA in about 10 minutes (instead of the 3+ hours I spent on hold the day before). They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ that shows how it works. The agent was able to manually override something in the system that let me fix the birthday issue. For SSN problems like yours, I think you definitely need to speak with an actual agent rather than trying to fix it yourself since it's a security-sensitive field.

I've never heard of Claimyr - is it an official FAFSA service? I'm hesitant to use third-party services for something involving SSNs and financial information.

It's not operated by FAFSA, but they don't access your FAFSA information at all. They just connect you with the official FSA phone line but skip the wait. You still talk directly to the government agents, just without spending hours on hold. Check out their website at claimyr.com - it explains how it works better than I can. Given your situation with twins and SSN issues, I think it's worth it to get a direct answer from FSA.

I work at a university financial aid office, and we see this exact issue with twins quite frequently. Here's what I tell families: 1. DO NOT create a new application or delete anything 2. The parent SSN error on Twin A's application needs to be fixed via the correction process after it's processed 3. For Twin B, you'll need to call FSA directly at 1-800-433-3243 and explain the situation The system treats duplicate SSNs as potential fraud attempts, which is triggering the account creation block. A verification specialist at FSA can place a note on your account and help manually override this for Twin B's application. Most importantly, document every call - get agent names, reference numbers, and summaries of what you're told. This will help if you need to request deadline extensions from schools.

Thank you so much for the insider perspective! I'll definitely start documenting everything. Do you think this will affect my twins' financial aid packages? I'm worried they'll miss out on school-specific grants if their FAFSA isn't processed in time.

Most schools understand these technical issues, especially with this year's FAFSA changes. If you're concerned about missing priority deadlines, proactively email the financial aid offices at each school explaining the situation. Include your FSA case number if you have one. Many schools will extend deadlines for families with documented FAFSA technical issues, but you need to communicate with them before the deadline passes, not after.

Just wondering - are your twins identical? My mom ran into issues with my twin brother's fafsa years ago because the system thought it was duplicate applications lol

They're fraternal twins (boy/girl), but I'm definitely wondering if the system is getting confused! Between similar birthdays, same address, and now the SSN mix-up, it's probably flagging everything as suspicious. What a headache!

Quick update to my earlier advice - check if Twin A's SAI calculation has been processed yet. If it has, the correction option should be available now. If it's been more than 5 business days with no calculation, that's when you should definitely call FSA directly, as there might be additional verification flags on the account due to the SSN discrepancy.

It's been 7 business days now and still showing as processing. I'll try calling tomorrow morning. Thank you for checking back in!

Did you ever get this fixed?? I'm dealing with something similar now and pulling my hair out!

Yes! Finally resolved it yesterday. I used the Claimyr service someone mentioned above to get through to FSA without the 2+ hour wait. The agent put notes on both accounts and manually cleared the SSN flag. Twin A's application is now being reprocessed with the correct info, and Twin B was able to create her account today. The agent said to expect another 5-7 days for both to fully process, but at least we're moving forward now!
