FAFSA system won't let me add twins after submitting for older child - multiple dependents issue

I'm completely stuck with the FAFSA system and getting really frustrated! I successfully submitted my older son's FAFSA application last week (he's a sophomore at State University), but now when I try to create applications for my twins who will be freshmen next fall, the system keeps giving me an error saying I already have an account in the system and won't let me proceed. I've tried logging out, clearing cookies, even using a different browser, but nothing works. Has anyone dealt with this when applying for multiple children? The twins start college in 8 months and I'm worried about missing priority deadlines for their financial aid. Any advice on how to add additional dependents to an existing FAFSA account?

I had this exact problem last year with my triplets! The new FAFSA system is supposed to make it easier for families with multiple students, but it's actually more confusing. You don't need to create separate accounts - you need to log into your existing account, go to "My Applications" and then select "Start New FAFSA Form" for the 2025-2026 award year. When you get to the student information section, you'll enter your twins' information separately (one at a time). It takes forever, but that's how the system is designed now.

Thank you! I feel so stupid now. I was clicking on "Create new account" instead of starting from my existing profile. I'll try this tonight. Do I need to use the same parent FSA ID for all three kids, or should I create different parent profiles for each one?

this happens to everybody lol. fafsa really needs to make the multiple student thing more clear. i almost gave up when applying for me n my sister last month

So true! Glad I'm not the only one confused by this. I've been filling out FAFSA forms for years and somehow the "simplified" system feels more complicated.

Actually, the problem might be that you're trying to create new accounts for your twins, when what you need to do is add them as additional students under your existing parent FSA ID. The entire family stays under one account now - it's different from the old system. You just need to create separate FSA IDs for each of your twins, but your parent FSA ID remains the same for all three children. Then you initiate a new FAFSA for each child using your parent account.

That makes sense, but I'm still confused about where to create the separate FSA IDs for my twins. When I log in with my parent account, I don't see an option to add new student profiles. Do they each need to create their own student FSA IDs first before I can add them?

Yes, each of your twins needs to create their own student FSA ID first at studentaid.gov/fsa-id/. After that, you log in with your parent FSA ID, select "Start 2025-2026 FAFSA Form" and you'll get to a screen where you can enter which student you're completing the form for. You'll have to do the entire process twice - once for each twin.

I went through this nightmare last month with my kids. After 5 hours on hold with Federal Student Aid, I finally got an agent who walked me through the exact steps. The new system requires each student to have their own FSA ID, but you use the same parent FSA ID for all applications. Here's the exact process: 1. Have each twin create their own FSA ID at studentaid.gov/fsa-id/ 2. Log in with YOUR parent FSA ID 3. Click "Start 2025-2026 FAFSA" 4. Enter the student's FSA ID when prompted 5. Complete the form for that student 6. Submit 7. Repeat steps 2-6 for the second twin The stupid part is that you have to enter all your parent info twice even though it's the same. If you're still stuck getting through to someone at Federal Student Aid, try Claimyr. It got me connected to an agent in 20 minutes instead of hours on hold. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ

Thank you SO MUCH for these detailed steps! I'll try this tonight. And thanks for the Claimyr tip - if I run into more issues I'll definitely check it out. After wasting 3 hours today trying to figure this out, anything that saves time would be worth it.

I actually used that Claimyr service too when my FAFSA got stuck in verification hell last semester. It actually works! Got me through to someone in like 15 mins when I'd been trying for DAYS. Just adding that it was worth it for the time saved.

am i the only one who thinks the whole "simplified" fafsa is actually MORE confusing?? like why cant they just let parents make one application for all their kids? my mom had to do my bros and mine separately and answer the EXACT SAME parent questions twice. makes zero sense.

It's not just you. The system was supposed to simplify things but created new problems. The most frustrating part is entering identical parent information multiple times - it should be able to copy that data automatically!

The duplicate parent information issue is actually being addressed in a future update according to studentaid.gov, but it won't be ready until the 2026-2027 application cycle. For now, we're stuck with the repetitive data entry.

I HATE THIS NEW SYSTEM SO MUCH!!!! Last year I could do all 3 of my kids applications in 30 minutes. This year it took me 7 HOURS to do the exact same thing!!!! And guess what? After all that the SAI calculation came back COMPLETELY WRONG because the system didn't properly account for multiple dependents in college at once. Had to file appeals for all 3 kids. Complete disaster. Good luck, you'll need it.

Oh no, that's exactly what I'm worried about. Did your appeal for the SAI calculation get resolved? We're counting on getting some aid with three in college at once.

Yeah they eventually fixed it after I submitted like 50 documents proving the kids were all actually in college. Just took 3 months to resolve while my kids almost lost their housing because aid was delayed. RIDICULOUS.

Update for anyone finding this thread: The Department of Education just announced they're going to simplify the process for parents with multiple students in the 2025-2026 cycle. They're adding a "copy parent information" button that will be available starting in November 2024. Should save parents from entering the same information multiple times.

That's great news! Though I still need to figure out how to do it now for next fall's applications. I'm going to try the steps everyone suggested this weekend. Thanks for all the help!
