FAFSA correction notice without details - can't figure out what errors need fixing

Just checked my email and received a notice saying my 2025-2026 FAFSA has errors that need correcting, but it doesn't specify WHAT needs to be fixed! I've logged into studentaid.gov three times today trying to figure this out but there's no error list or highlighted sections. The status just says 'Correction Required' with a deadline in 14 days. Has anyone dealt with this before? I'm freaking out because my SAI score will determine if I get enough aid for next semester. How am I supposed to fix errors if they don't tell me what's wrong??

This happened to me last year. There should be a 'View Correction Requirements' button on your FAFSA dashboard after you log in. It's usually right below where it shows your application status. If you click that, it should take you to a page that lists all the specific sections that need correction. Each section should have a little flag icon next to it.

I don't see any button like that anywhere! There's just the status saying 'Correction Required' but no details or flags or anything. I'm going to try logging in on a different browser in case it's some kind of glitch.

In my experience, when this happens without specific error flags, it's usually one of three things: 1) a mismatch between your reported income and what the IRS has on file, 2) a discrepancy in household size information, or 3) missing signatures (either yours or a parent's if you're a dependent student). Try checking those sections first even if they're not flagged.

Thanks, I'll double check those sections. My parents are divorced so maybe there's confusion about the household size. I thought I filled that out correctly though... ugh this is so frustrating.

I tried calling the Federal Student Aid number but got disconnected after waiting 45 minutes! I'm about to lose my mind. I'll try again tomorrow I guess.

The entire FAFSA system is BROKEN this year! I've been dealing with the same issue - correction notices with NO DETAILS about what needs fixing. Called 6 times and either got disconnected or told different things by different reps. Meanwhile my college financial aid office keeps sending threatening emails about my incomplete application. The new 'simplified' FAFSA is anything but simplified!!

Same here! This new FAFSA is a nightmare. I had to submit three different corrections because each time they'd tell me something different needed fixing. I think they're just making it up as they go along honestly.

After struggling with FAFSA correction issues for weeks, I found a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual FSA agent without the ridiculous wait times. You can see how it works at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. I was skeptical but it actually worked - got connected to someone who could see exactly what fields needed correction on my application. The agent walked me through fixing everything in about 15 minutes. Saved me so much stress! Their website is claimyr.com if you want to check it out.

Omg thank you! I've never heard of this but at this point I'll try anything. My deadline is coming up fast and I NEED this figured out. I'll check out the video. Did they actually tell you specifically what was wrong with your application?

my cousin had this happen and it turned out the system flagged their application because they put a decimal point in their savings account total? like they put $1,250.75 instead of just $1251. maybe check if you used any symbols or decimals anywhere?

That's actually a good point. The new FAFSA system is extremely picky about formatting. No dollar signs, no decimals, no commas. Even if you rounded correctly, the wrong format can trigger an error.

@OP - Yes! The agent could see exactly what was wrong. In my case, there was a mismatch between what I entered for my parent's retirement account and what was reported on their tax forms. The correction notice didn't specify this at all, but the agent knew immediately. They also told me there was a signature issue that wasn't showing up on my end.

This is EXACTLY why the system is broken. Why send correction notices without telling people what needs correcting?? Just another way they make it harder for people who need financial aid to actually get it.

Quick update on a policy change that might be relevant here: For the 2025-2026 application cycle, the Department of Education implemented new validation rules that sometimes don't display properly in the user interface. If you have access to your SAI calculation worksheet (should be downloadable from your FAFSA portal), check if there's a section called "Items Selected for Verification" at the bottom. Sometimes the errors are listed there even when they don't show up in the main interface.

I found it!!! There was a tiny link to download the SAI worksheet that I completely missed. It shows three fields flagged for verification: parent income, student assets, and household size. Thank you so much for pointing this out! Now I at least know what needs fixing.

Great! Now make sure when you submit the corrections that you re-sign the FAFSA (both you and parent if required). A lot of people make corrections but forget the final signature step, which just creates another round of errors. And take screenshots of your confirmation page after submitting - you might need those if there's any question later about whether you made the corrections on time.

Will do, thanks! I'm going to work on these corrections tonight. Hopefully this resolves everything and I can get my finalized SAI score soon. I appreciate everyone's help!

Just want to add another tip for anyone else dealing with this - if you're still having trouble finding the specific errors after checking the SAI worksheet, try accessing your FAFSA from a computer instead of mobile. The mobile interface sometimes doesn't display all the error flags properly. Also, clear your browser cache before logging in - I've seen cases where old cached data interferes with the correction interface. The FAFSA system has definitely had more glitches this year than usual, but most issues can be resolved once you know where to look!

That's really helpful advice! I was actually trying to do everything on my phone which probably made it even more confusing. I'll definitely try from my laptop next time I have FAFSA issues. It's crazy how many technical problems this "improved" system has. Thanks for the browser cache tip too - I never would have thought of that!

I'm so glad you found the SAI worksheet - that's exactly where those hidden errors usually lurk! For future reference, if anyone else runs into this issue, you can also try logging out completely and logging back in. Sometimes the system needs a fresh session to display all the correction flags properly. Also, if you're still having trouble after making corrections, don't wait until the last day of your deadline to follow up. The processing can take 3-5 business days even for simple corrections, and you don't want to miss your deadline because of system delays. Good luck with your corrections!
