FAFSA correction email missing - how to find what needs fixing?

I'm so confused about making corrections to my son's FAFSA application. FSA was supposed to send an email explaining what corrections we needed to make, but I never received anything! On my son's studentaid.gov account it shows 'Correction needed: Parent signature required' but then there's this vague message saying 'Other corrections may be needed' without specifying what they are. Has anyone else dealt with this? How am I supposed to know what to fix if they won't tell me what's wrong? We're already into March and I'm worried about missing priority deadlines for his financial aid package.

Same thing happened to me with my daughter's FAFSA! The correction email they promised never came. I finally figured out you have to log in to the student's account, go to the FAFSA application status page, then click on 'View SAI Report' - that PDF will have a section called 'Items for Correction' with all the specific issues flagged. The vague message is just their system being unhelpful as usual.

Thank you so much! I'll try that right now. I've been checking my email every day for two weeks waiting for their instructions. Why can't they make this process more straightforward?

It's definitely confusing! The system is supposed to generate an email for corrections, but it's notoriously unreliable. I recommend both you AND your son check spam folders first. If nothing's there, you'll need to go to studentaid.gov, log in with your student's account, and look for the "Make FAFSA Corrections" option. Once you open that, it should highlight all fields that need attention with little red triangles. Your parent signature is definitely needed, but there could be income verification issues or missing tax info as well.

I checked all our spam folders already - nothing! This is our first time with the FAFSA and everything seems designed to be as complicated as possible. I'll try the 'Make FAFSA Corrections' section tonight.

That's really unfortunate about your situation. For others reading this thread - this is exactly why it's critical to be proactive about checking your application status regularly rather than waiting for emails. The system isn't reliable enough to count on notifications.

For what it's worth, FAFSA's correction notification system has been especially buggy since they rolled out the new simplified FAFSA for 2024-2025. I work in a college financial aid office, and we've seen tons of students with this exact issue. Some technical tips: 1. Try accessing the FAFSA from different browsers - sometimes Chrome works when Edge doesn't 2. The student should go to "View or Print your SAI Report" - corrections are usually listed on page 1 3. If your student's school already has access to the FAFSA data, you can call their financial aid office directly - they can often see exactly what needs correction And don't panic about the signature - that's an easy fix and won't affect your SAI calculation once resolved.

This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I didn't even think to contact his school's financial aid office. I'll try that tomorrow if we can't figure it out tonight.

FAFSA is the WORST! I've been dealing with correction issues for weeks and no emails either. They expect us to be mind readers! This new 'simplified' system is a total disaster - I preferred the old complicated one that at least WORKED. I spent 4 hours on hold trying to reach someone at Federal Student Aid yesterday and got disconnected THREE TIMES. I'm about ready to give up on financial aid altogether.

I had the same frustrating experience trying to reach FSA about correction issues! After getting disconnected twice, I found this service called Claimyr that got me through to an actual agent in about 20 minutes instead of the usual 2+ hour wait. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ and their website is claimyr.com. The agent was able to see all the specific corrections needed and walk me through them. Saved me hours of frustration!

i think the new FAFSA is so broken lol... my brother's application kept saying he needed corrections but we couldn't figure out what. turns out my dad typed his SSN wrong by ONE digit and it never told us specifically that was the problem! might be worth double-checking all the personal info fields

Oh no, that's worrying! I'll make sure to check all the SSNs and personal information fields. It's scary that such a small error could hold up the whole process without clear notification.

One more important note - if you're making corrections, you AND your student will likely need to re-sign the FAFSA with your FSA IDs after any changes. I've seen many cases where parents fix the issues but forget this step, which creates even more delays. The signature page should be the last step in the correction process. And don't wait for an email confirmation after making corrections - log back in after 3-5 business days to verify the status has changed to "Processing" or "Processed.

Thank you for the reminder! I definitely would have forgotten about re-signing after making the corrections. This process has so many steps and hidden requirements.

After you log in to studentaid.gov, click on "Apply for Aid" then find your completed FAFSA. There should be a button that says "View SAI Report" or something similar. Click that, and it downloads a PDF that has a section for corrections. Hope that helps!

UPDATE: I finally figured it out! For anyone with the same problem - I logged into my son's account, clicked on his FAFSA application, then found a small link that said "View Student Aid Index Report". The PDF had a section called "Items Flagged for Review" which showed we had entered conflicting information about our mortgage interest deduction. Plus I had to sign again as the parent contributor. Thank you all for your help! Now I just hope we haven't missed any important deadlines...

That's great news! And thank you for sharing the exact steps you took - that will help others in the same situation. Regarding deadlines, most schools have rolling financial aid deadlines for FAFSA corrections, so you should be fine. Just make sure you submit the corrections ASAP and maybe send a quick email to your son's school's financial aid office letting them know you've fixed the issues.
