FAFSA Parent Plus loan processing time? No update after 3 weeks

I'm getting worried about my Dad's Parent Plus loan application for my upcoming Spring semester. He submitted it exactly 22 days ago and we've heard absolutely nothing back - not even an automated email confirming they received it. The studentaid.gov dashboard just shows "processing" with no estimated completion date. My tuition bill is due in 6 weeks and I'm starting to panic. Is this normal? Should we call someone? Do Parent Plus loans usually take this long to process? My SAI score was pretty low (1200) if that matters for processing time.

omg i went thru EXACTLY the same thing last semster! it took my mom's parent plus app like 30 days to get approved and my school was already sending me tuition reminders. the system is so broken lol. i think they're just super backed up rn with all the FAFSA changes

30 days?! That's cutting it so close to my payment deadline. Did your school give you any grace period while you waited for the loan to come through?

Parent Plus loan processing typically takes 2-4 weeks under normal circumstances, but with the recent FAFSA changes and system updates, many applicants are experiencing longer wait times. A few things to consider: 1. Check that your father completed all sections of the application, including the credit check authorization 2. Verify his FSA ID was properly linked to the application 3. Confirm the school code was correctly entered 4. Make sure your own FAFSA was fully processed first (Parent Plus relies on your base FAFSA being complete) If you've verified all these things, I would recommend contacting your school's financial aid office. They often have visibility into pending Parent Plus applications and can tell you if there are any issues they can see on their end.

Thank you! I just double-checked and my dad did complete the credit check portion, and his FSA ID is definitely linked correctly. My FAFSA was processed about 6 weeks ago, so that should be fine. I'll call my financial aid office tomorrow morning.

You might want to consider calling Federal Student Aid directly. They can check the status of your Parent Plus application in real-time and tell you if there are any issues causing the delay. The standard FSA number (1-800-433-3243) typically has really long wait times right now though. I recently used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an agent within minutes instead of hours. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ The agent I spoke with was able to see exactly where my application was stuck in processing and manually move it forward. Worth a try if you're running up against that tuition deadline!

i tried calling that FSA number like 5 times last month and kept getting disconnected after waiting foreverrrr. might try that claimyr thing cuz im in the same boat with my dads plusloan ugh

I'm definitely going to try calling tomorrow. The video link was helpful - I had no idea the wait times were that bad. If I get stuck on hold forever I'll give Claimyr a shot.

HAHAHAHA welcome to the wonderful world of FAFSA and Parent Plus hell! 22 days is NOTHING my friend. My stepdad's application took 47 DAYS last year and nobody could tell us why!!! The entire system is designed to make you suffer while they take their sweet time "processing" a simple credit check that should take 5 minutes. The best part? When they finally approved it, they backdated everything like we weren't stressed for 6+ weeks. FAFSA is a disaster this year especially.

47 days?! That's insane! My school literally drops students from classes if payment arrangements aren't made by the deadline. Did your school give you any flexibility while you waited?

Here's what you should do: Call your school's financial aid office immediately and explain the situation. Most schools have temporary solutions like payment plans or short-term emergency loans to help bridge the gap while you're waiting for aid to process. I work in higher ed (not financial aid specifically), but I know most institutions have procedures for exactly this situation! Also, if your SAI is 1200, have you looked into whether you qualify for Pell Grants? That could reduce how much your parent needs to borrow through the Plus loan.

0 coins

That's so helpful, thank you! I did qualify for some Pell Grant money ($3,800) but unfortunately my cost of attendance is much higher than that. I'll definitely call my financial aid office tomorrow and ask about emergency options while we wait.

my parents got denied for a parent plus loan last year and it was actaully a blessing in disguise becus then i qualified for additional unsubsidized loans in my own name! the whole system is so weird, like they want your parents to get rejected so you can borrow more yourself lol. might be worth checking into if your waiting forever and worried about deadlines

This is actually an important point. If a parent is denied for a Parent Plus loan due to adverse credit history, the student becomes eligible for additional unsubsidized loans in their own name. The amount ranges from $4,000-$5,000 per year depending on your year in school. It's something to consider if your father's application is ultimately denied.

0 coins

That's interesting! My dad has pretty good credit so I don't think he'll be denied, but good to know there's a backup option. The additional unsubsidized amount would actually cover what I need if it came to that.

btw have u checked ur spam folder? my mom's approval email went straight to her junk mail and we almost missed it lol. might be worth checking!

Just checked all folders including spam/junk and nothing from Federal Student Aid. Only emails we have are from when he initially created his FSA ID months ago. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Quick update on my earlier comment - when you call FSA about a Parent Plus loan, make sure you have your father's information ready (SSN, DOB, address) as well as your own. They'll need to verify both of you since the loan links to both identities. Your father might need to be present for the call or at least available by phone for verification purposes.

Great tip! I'll make sure my dad is around when I make the call tomorrow. Really appreciate all the advice here.

Parent Plus loans sometimes experience delays if there's a discrepancy between the parent's name as entered on the application and how it appears on their credit report. Even small differences like using a nickname vs. formal name, or missing a hyphen in a last name can cause the system to flag the application for manual review. Might be worth checking if this could be an issue for your dad.

0 coins

That's a really good point I hadn't considered. My dad goes by his middle name for everything, but his legal first name is on all his official documents. I'll ask him which name he used on the application when I get home.

I'm going through the exact same situation right now! My mom submitted her Parent Plus application 19 days ago and we're also stuck at "processing" with no updates. It's so stressful when tuition deadlines are looming. Reading through all these comments has been really helpful - I had no idea about the name discrepancy issue or that wait times were so much longer this year. I'm definitely going to call my financial aid office tomorrow too and see if they have any emergency payment options while we wait. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences, it makes me feel less alone in this mess!

I'm so glad I found this thread too! It's crazy how many of us are dealing with the exact same processing delays right now. 19 days is way too long for what should be a straightforward application. I'm planning to call both my financial aid office and FSA tomorrow - maybe if enough of us start calling they'll realize how backed up the system really is. Keep us posted on what you find out!

Wow, reading through all these experiences makes me realize how widespread this issue is! I'm in a similar boat - my mom's Parent Plus application has been stuck in processing for 18 days now. What's really frustrating is that there's no transparency about what's actually happening during this "processing" time or any realistic timeline estimates. I'm going to try calling FSA tomorrow with my mom present for verification, and I'll also reach out to my school's financial aid office to see what temporary payment arrangements they might have. It's reassuring to know I'm not the only one dealing with this - the system really seems overwhelmed this year. Thanks for starting this thread, Dylan!

I'm dealing with this too! My dad's Parent Plus loan has been processing for 16 days now and I'm getting really anxious about my tuition deadline. It's honestly mind-blowing that something as important as student financial aid can have such unpredictable processing times with zero communication. I've been checking the studentaid.gov portal obsessively but it just says the same thing every day. Definitely going to call tomorrow and see if I can get any actual information about what's causing these delays. This whole thread has been so helpful - at least we know we're not alone in this stressful situation!

I'm in the exact same situation and it's so stressful! My parent's Plus loan application has been stuck at "processing" for 20 days now with zero communication from FSA. After reading all these comments, I'm realizing this seems to be a widespread issue this year - way more delays than usual. I'm definitely going to call my financial aid office first thing tomorrow to ask about emergency payment plans while we wait. It's honestly ridiculous that they can't give us any kind of realistic timeline or status updates beyond "processing." Thanks for posting this - at least now I know I'm not the only one going through this nightmare!

I'm so relieved to find this thread! My dad's Parent Plus loan has been processing for 15 days now and I was starting to think something was seriously wrong with our application. Reading everyone's experiences shows this is clearly a system-wide issue this year. I'm planning to call both FSA and my financial aid office tomorrow - it sounds like the schools might have more flexibility with payment deadlines than I realized. This whole situation is so nerve-wracking when you're trying to plan for the semester! Thanks to everyone for sharing their timelines and advice.

I'm dealing with the exact same thing right now and this thread is honestly a lifesaver! My mom's Parent Plus application has been stuck in "processing" for 17 days with absolutely no updates or communication. I was starting to panic thinking we did something wrong, but seeing everyone else's experiences makes it clear this is just how broken the system is right now. The lack of transparency is so frustrating - like how hard would it be to give us even a rough estimate of processing times? I'm definitely calling my financial aid office tomorrow to ask about payment deferrals or emergency loans while we wait. It's crazy that we're all dealing with the same processing nightmare but at least we can help each other figure out next steps!

I'm in the exact same boat - my parent's Plus loan has been processing for 21 days now and I'm getting so anxious about my payment deadline! It's honestly shocking how many of us are dealing with identical delays. After reading through everyone's experiences here, I'm planning to call both my school's financial aid office and FSA tomorrow. It sounds like the schools might have emergency payment options that could buy us time while we wait for these loans to finally process. This whole thread has been such a relief - I thought our application was broken or lost in the system somehow. The fact that this is happening to so many people makes it clear the system is just completely overwhelmed right now. Thanks for sharing your experience!

This thread has been incredibly helpful - I had no idea so many people were experiencing these same delays! My mom's Parent Plus loan has been stuck at "processing" for 14 days now and I was starting to worry we missed something or filled it out wrong. Seeing that wait times of 15-20+ days seem to be the norm this year is both reassuring and frustrating. The complete lack of communication from FSA is really unacceptable when students are trying to plan for tuition deadlines. I'm going to follow everyone's advice here and call my financial aid office tomorrow to ask about emergency payment arrangements while we wait. It's wild that a credit check that should take minutes is taking weeks with zero updates. Thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences and tips - at least we're all suffering through this together!

I'm so glad this thread exists! My dad's Parent Plus loan has been processing for 19 days now and I was starting to think we were the only ones dealing with this. It's honestly mind-boggling that so many of us are stuck in the exact same situation with zero communication from FSA. The anxiety about tuition deadlines is real! I'm definitely calling my school's financial aid office first thing tomorrow after reading everyone's advice here. It sounds like they might have temporary solutions we don't even know about. Thanks for sharing your timeline Emma - it helps knowing we're all navigating this broken system together. Hopefully we'll start getting some answers soon!

I'm going through the exact same nightmare right now! My mom submitted her Parent Plus application 24 days ago and we're still stuck at "processing" with absolutely no updates. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been both comforting and terrifying - comforting to know we're not alone, but terrifying to see how widespread these delays are! I had no idea the system was this broken this year. My tuition deadline is in 5 weeks and I'm honestly starting to lose sleep over it. I'm definitely going to call my financial aid office tomorrow morning to ask about emergency payment plans, and then try FSA if I can get through. It's absolutely ridiculous that a simple credit check is taking a month with zero communication. Thanks for posting this Dylan - this thread has been more helpful than anything I've found on the official FSA website!

I'm in the exact same situation - 23 days and counting for my dad's Parent Plus loan with zero updates! This thread has been such a relief because I was starting to think our application got lost in the system somehow. It's honestly insane that so many of us are dealing with identical processing delays with no communication from FSA. The anxiety about tuition deadlines is so real! I'm planning to call my financial aid office first thing tomorrow too - it sounds like they might have emergency options we don't even know about. It's crazy that we're all having to become detectives just to figure out what's happening with our own financial aid applications. Thanks for sharing your timeline - at least we know we're not going crazy and this really is a system-wide mess!

Wow, reading through all these experiences is both eye-opening and terrifying! I'm new to this whole process (first year college student) and my mom just submitted her Parent Plus application 3 days ago. Based on what everyone is sharing here, it sounds like I should mentally prepare for at least a 3-4 week wait minimum. The lack of transparency from FSA is really concerning - you'd think they'd at least send periodic status updates or give realistic timeline estimates on their website. I'm definitely going to proactively call my financial aid office next week to ask about emergency payment options before we get closer to any deadlines. Thanks everyone for sharing your timelines and advice - this thread is way more informative than anything I've found on the official government websites!

Welcome to the Parent Plus loan waiting game! You're smart to be preparing mentally for the long haul based on everyone's experiences here. Three days in, you've got time to be proactive which is great. Definitely call your financial aid office early - I wish I had done that from the beginning instead of waiting until I was panicking about deadlines. Also make sure your mom checks that all her info matches exactly across her FSA ID, credit reports, and the application itself - some people mentioned name discrepancies causing extra delays. Keep us posted on how it goes!
