Parent Plus loan disbursed but no loan servicer info yet - normal or concerning?

My daughter just started her sophomore year, and I took out a Parent Plus loan ($19,800) to cover what her scholarships didn't. The money was disbursed to her university about 3 weeks ago, and I can see it posted on her student account. But I haven't received ANY communication about who's servicing the loan or when/how I'm supposed to start making payments. The financial aid office just keeps saying "you'll get something in the mail" but nothing has arrived. Is this normal timing? Should I be concerned or reaching out to someone else? This is my first time using Parent Plus (we cash-flowed freshman year) and I'm not sure if I'm supposed to be doing something proactive here.

totally normal! takes FOREVER to get the servicer info. my daughters parent plus took like 6-7 weeks before I got anything in the mail about who was servicing it. the federal loan system is soooo slow with this. you can check studentaid.gov to see who got assigned as your servicer but sometimes even that takes time to update.

Thank you! I feel better knowing I'm not the only one. I'll check studentaid.gov tonight. I just don't want to miss any payments and damage my credit score.

This is completely normal processing time. Parent Plus loans typically take 4-6 weeks after disbursement before the loan servicer information is assigned and communicated to borrowers. Here's what you should know: 1. Your loan is currently in a post-disbursement processing period 2. Repayment doesn't begin until after the 6-month grace period anyway 3. You can log into studentaid.gov and click on "My Aid" to see if your loan servicer has been assigned yet 4. If it's been over 8 weeks, then you should contact Federal Student Aid for clarification No need to worry about missing payments - you won't have any payment obligations until you receive official notice from your assigned servicer. They'll send detailed information about payment options when the time comes.

You're right to question this - I should clarify. Parent Plus loans technically don't have the same automatic 6-month grace period that Direct Student Loans have. However, there's still typically a gap between disbursement and when the first payment is due. You can also request a deferment while your student is enrolled at least half-time. Your loan servicer will communicate the exact payment start date once they contact you.

OMG the dept of education is SUCH a disaster with parent plus loans! i took one out in August and didnt hear ANYTHING about payments until DECEMBER!!! by then i had completely forgotten about it and nearly missed my first payment. the whole system is designed to make parents fail i swear

This happened to my sister too! But actually the delay worked in her favor because she was able to save up for the first few payments during that time. I think they're just overwhelmed with processing all the loans, especially with all the recent changes to the federal student aid system.

Has any1 got a Parent Plus from Aidvantage? They took over my daughters loans from Navient and they are THE WORST! Still waiting on my tax info to update from 2 MONTHS ago and can't get a human on the phone EVER. Just curious who they're assigning the new parent plus loans to these days.

I had Aidvantage for my son's Parent Plus from last year, but my daughter's got assigned to Nelnet this year. They seem to be spreading them around between the major servicers. If you're having trouble reaching someone at Aidvantage, I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual human. They have this system that waits on hold for you and calls when a rep picks up. Saved me hours of frustration! They have a demo video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ

UPDATE: I finally checked studentaid.gov and my loan HAS been assigned to MOHELA. Still no communication from them directly, but at least I know who to contact now! Thanks everyone for the reassurance.

Excellent! MOHELA is one of the better servicers in my experience. I recommend creating an account on their website as soon as possible. You can set up automatic payments there once they're ready to process them. Glad you were able to find the information you needed!

I always feel like parent plus loans are purposely confusing. I've taken them out for both my kids and the process seems different every single time. One important thing to note - make sure you check if you're eligible for any of the income-contingent repayment plans. Most parents don't realize you can sometimes get lower payments based on your income, especially with the new SAVE plan changes. You'll need to consolidate first though.

Wait, Parent Plus loans can be eligible for income-based repayment? I thought those were only for student loans. Is this something new with the Biden changes? How would I even begin to look into that?

It's a bit complicated but yes! Parent Plus loans aren't directly eligible for income-driven repayment plans. However, if you consolidate your Parent Plus loan into a Direct Consolidation Loan, that consolidated loan becomes eligible for Income-Contingent Repayment (ICR). It's not as generous as some of the other plans, but it could lower your payments. You can start the consolidation process at studentaid.gov after you've made your first few payments. The recent changes haven't expanded this much for Parent Plus specifically, but the overall payment calculations are more favorable now.

PRO TIP: go ahead and make a login on EVERY loan servicer website (mohela, nelnet, aidvantage, etc) bc they might make your account but not email u about it!! i found out my account was active for a MONTH before they sent me anything!

This is such helpful information! I'm in a similar situation with my first Parent Plus loan and was starting to panic. Question for everyone - once MOHELA (or whatever servicer) finally contacts you, do they give you flexibility on when payments start? My daughter's tuition is due again in January and I'm worried about having two big expenses hitting at the same time. Can you request to delay the first payment by a month or two to spread things out better?

Yes, most servicers do offer some flexibility with payment start dates! When MOHELA contacts you, they'll typically give you a first payment due date, but you can usually call them to request a deferment or adjust the timing if your student is still enrolled at least half-time. I'd recommend calling as soon as you get your servicer information rather than waiting for the payment notice. That way you can plan around your tuition payment schedule. Also, many servicers offer the option to change your payment due date once you're established - like moving it to later in the month if that works better with your budget.

I'm going through the exact same thing right now with my son's Parent Plus loan! It's been about 4 weeks since disbursement and I was getting really anxious about not hearing anything. This thread is so reassuring - sounds like the 6-8 week timeline is totally normal. I'm definitely going to check studentaid.gov tonight to see if a servicer has been assigned yet. Has anyone had experience with getting email notifications when your servicer info gets updated, or do you just have to keep checking manually?

I don't think they send automatic email notifications when your servicer gets assigned - you pretty much have to keep checking studentaid.gov manually. But once your servicer does get assigned and you create an account with them, then you can usually set up email alerts for payment reminders and account updates. I learned this the hard way with my first Parent Plus loan! Now I just check the federal site every few days until I see the servicer info show up.
