FAFSA PPL loan application response time - still waiting after 3 weeks

Anyone know how long it takes to get a response for a Parent Plus Loan application through FAFSA? I submitted my PPL application 3 weeks ago and still haven't heard ANYTHING back. My daughter's tuition payment deadline is coming up in 2 weeks and I'm getting really nervous. The financial aid office at her school just keeps telling me to wait for the FAFSA system to process it. Is this normal? Do they send approval by email or physical mail? The suspense is killing me and her fall semester literally depends on this!

same. been waiting 25 days now. ridiculous!

Seriously?? 25 days?! That's making me even more nervous. Did you try calling them at all?

My daughter's friend applied for PPL and got approved in like 5 days so idk maybe somethings wrong with your application?

That's what I'm worried about! But wouldn't they tell me if something was wrong? I don't want to miss her tuition deadline...

Standard processing time for Parent PLUS loans is typically 3-5 business days if there are no issues with your credit check. If it's been 3 weeks, something is likely holding up your application. The most common reasons are: 1. Credit issues that need manual review 2. Verification flags on your student's FAFSA 3. Missing information on the application 4. System delays (less common but happening more with the new FAFSA) You should definitely contact Federal Student Aid directly rather than just waiting. You'll get notification by both email and in your studentaid.gov account when approved.

Thank you! I'll try to contact them tomorrow. My credit score is pretty good (760) so I don't think that's the issue, but maybe there's something else wrong.

OMG the EXACT same thing happened to me last year!!! I waited for like a month and turns out my application was STUCK because I had a typo in my SSN 🤦‍♀️ Call them ASAP don't wait!!

Oh no! I double-checked all my info but who knows. Going to call first thing tomorrow.

I'd recommend contacting FSA directly rather than going through the school's financial aid office. The school can't actually see what's happening with your PPL application in the system - they just see whether it's been approved or not. The PLUS loan should only take about a week to process if everything is in order. After 3 weeks, you should definitely follow up. Make sure when you call that you: 1. Have your FSA ID ready 2. Have your daughter's information handy 3. Ask specifically about any holds or verification issues 4. Request an expedited review due to approaching payment deadline Also, if approved, you'll receive an email notification and it will show in both your and your daughter's studentaid.gov accounts. The school will receive electronic notification as well.

Thank you for the detailed instructions! I've been trying to call them but keep getting stuck on hold for hours and then disconnected. Is there a better time of day to reach them?

Try using Claimyr to get through to FSA faster. I was in the same boat with my PPL application and kept getting disconnected or waiting forever. Used claimyr.com and actually got through to a person in like 15 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ Turns out my application was held up because my daughter's SAI score was being recalculated. Got it resolved that same day after weeks of waiting.

The parent plus loan system is BROKEN. They CLAIM it takes 3-5 days but that's complete BS. My application took 32 days to process and my son almost lost his housing because of it. The whole system is designed to make you fail so they can charge late fees. And nobody at FSA cares or takes responsibility!!!! If you have any other options besides PPL, use them!!!

my cousins got theres in a week so maybe just bad luck??

Just to clarify something important - a Parent PLUS loan (PPL) is different from your FAFSA application. The FAFSA generates your SAI (Student Aid Index), which determines grant eligibility, but the PPL is a separate credit-based loan application that parents complete after the FAFSA. If your PPL is delayed, your daughter should still receive any grants or Direct student loans she qualifies for through her FAFSA. The PPL is supplemental funding. Also, while waiting, contact your daughter's school financial aid office about a payment plan option. Many schools will let you start a semester with just the first payment of a plan while you wait for loan processing.

Thank you for clarifying! Yes, she did get her Pell Grant and a small subsidized loan, but we still need the PPL to cover about $8,500 for this semester. I'll ask about a payment plan option - that's a really good idea.

update - finally got my ppl approved after 27 days! no explanation for delay, just randomly got the email today. hang in there!

That gives me some hope! I managed to get through to FSA today using that Claimyr service someone recommended above. They said my application was flagged for manual review because I had a credit freeze from years ago that I forgot about! They're expediting it now and said I should hear back within 3 business days. The agent also said they're experiencing major backlogs right now because of the FAFSA changes this year.

Glad to hear you got through and found the issue! The credit freeze thing is so sneaky - I bet a lot of people don't realize that can hold up their application. Definitely keeping my fingers crossed that they stick to the 3-day timeline they gave you. It's crazy that they're having such major backlogs this year. Makes me wonder how many other families are going through this same stress right now. Thanks for the update and hope your daughter gets everything sorted before her deadline!
