FAFSA 2025-26 spouse SSN showing blank with 'no SSN' checked - anyone able to correct this yet?
I submitted my FAFSA about 2 weeks ago and just noticed a major error - somehow my spouse's SSN is completely blank AND the box saying they don't have an SSN is checked (which is 100% wrong - they're a citizen with a valid SSN). I called the FSA helpline yesterday and got transferred 3 times with 3 completely different answers: 1st rep: "This section can't be corrected yet, the correction functionality will open later this month" 2nd rep: "You need to submit a special form to your school's financial aid office" 3rd rep: "Just wait for verification and fix it then" I'm super stressed about this because I know incorrect SSN info can delay processing by weeks. Has anyone else run into this specific issue and successfully fixed it? If so, HOW? I don't want to wait if there's a way to correct it now.

Yep, had the EXACT same problem but with my parent's SSN showing as blank + checked as 'don't have one.' I was able to fix it by calling FSA yesterday morning and speaking with a supervisor (regular agents weren't helpful). They had to submit some kind of internal correction request. They said many 2025-26 applications have this glitch.

•Thank you!! Did they give you any confirmation number or timeframe for the fix? And did you have to specifically ask for a supervisor or did the regular agent transfer you?

This is a known issue with the 2025-26 FAFSA. What you need to do is: 1. Call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-433-3243 2. Request to speak with a Tier 2 support specialist specifically (Tier 1 agents don't have access to the correction tools for this issue) 3. Explain that your spouse's SSN is showing as blank with the "no SSN" box checked incorrectly 4. They should be able to submit a backend correction request The correction should process within 3-5 business days. You'll want to verify the change by checking your SAI calculation after that timeframe. This is affecting about 8% of applications with contributor information, according to what a financial aid officer told me last week.

•This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I'll try calling again tomorrow morning and ask specifically for Tier 2 support. I was so confused because the first person acted like it was totally normal to have to wait for corrections to be available.

•I had the same issue with getting disconnected multiple times. I ended up using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual FAFSA agent without the wait. They have this service where they wait on hold for you and call when an agent is on the line. Saved me hours of frustration. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ

My daughter had SAME EXACT ISSUE but with her father's SSN showing as blank and the "no SSN" box checked. We've been trying to fix it for 3 weeks!!! Her college financial aid office told us we need to wait for verification and then submit correction documents. BUT her friend's financial aid office at a different school told them they could fix it immediately by submitting a special form?? I don't know who to believe anymore. The whole system is BROKEN!!!

•The correct procedure is to get it fixed directly through FSA before verification. Financial aid offices can help during verification, but that delays processing by 2-3 weeks. Call FSA and ask for Tier 2 support specifically.

I work at a financial aid office, and I can confirm this is a widespread issue with the new 2025-26 FAFSA system. Here's what's happening: 1. The SSN field is experiencing a display glitch where valid SSNs entered during submission are not being stored properly 2. The system is then automatically checking the "does not have SSN" box as a default 3. The correction portal for this specific field is not fully activated yet The FASTEST solution is to call FSA directly and request a Tier 2 specialist who has access to the backend correction tools. The correction usually processes within 3-5 business days. Alternatively, you can wait until your FAFSA enters verification, but that will delay your financial aid package by several weeks, which I wouldn't recommend. We're seeing this issue with approximately 10% of our students' applications.

•Thank you SO much for this detailed explanation! It's incredibly helpful to hear from someone who understands the issue from the financial aid office perspective. I'll definitely call tomorrow and specifically ask for a Tier 2 specialist.

•Even if your spouse doesn't work, their SSN is still required for identity verification purposes. The FAFSA uses the SSN to cross-check with IRS records and to verify dependency status. Missing or incorrect SSN information, especially for a spouse, can trigger verification flags or even cause the application to be rejected during processing.

Update on my situation - got the SSN fixed! Called back this morning, asked for Tier 2 support like someone suggested, and they fixed it immediately. The agent said it should update in 3-5 days in the system. FYI they said this is happening because the system isn't correctly transferring contributor information from the IRS data retrieval tool.

UPDATE: I called this morning, asked specifically for Tier 2 support, and got someone who knew exactly what I was talking about! She said they've had tons of these cases and submitted a correction request for my spouse's SSN. She gave me a confirmation number and said it should be fixed in the system within 3-5 business days. She also mentioned they're working on a system update to fix this glitch for everyone affected. Thank you all for your help!!

•Great to hear! Make sure to check your account after 5 business days to verify the change went through. If it's still not showing correctly by then, call back with your confirmation number.
