FAFSA 2025-2026 correction period start date? Contributor invitation blocked due to wrong answer
Does anyone know when we will be able to make corrections to the 2025-2026 FAFSA? My daughter completed her application last week but accidentally marked herself as homeless (she clicked the wrong option when rushing through). Now the system won't let her send me a contributor invitation because it thinks she's independent due to the homeless status. The FSA website just says corrections will be available "in the future" but gives no actual date. I'm freaking out because her college needs our info for her financial aid package, and the deadline is coming up. Has anyone dealt with this or know when corrections will open up?

•It's good to know we're not alone! Have you tried calling them? I spent an hour on hold yesterday and then got disconnected.

The Department of Education announced corrections will be available starting in late March or early April for the 2025-2026 FAFSA. In the meantime, I recommend having your daughter contact her school's financial aid office directly to explain the situation. Many schools have processes to handle these exact scenarios before the corrections period begins, especially for dependency status issues. They may have her complete a paper form to document the correct information until the electronic system allows changes.

•Thank you, that's really helpful! She'll contact her school tomorrow. Do you know if they'll extend the priority deadline because of all these FAFSA issues this year? Her school's deadline is April 15.

•Many institutions have indeed extended their priority deadlines this year due to the FAFSA delays and technical issues. I'd have her specifically ask about deadline extensions when she contacts the financial aid office. Most schools are being quite flexible this cycle.

I had the SAME PROBLEM but with the military question!!! My daughter accidentally clicked that she was in the military (she's 18 and definitely not in the military lol). Been trying to fix this for WEEKS. The whole new FAFSA system is a DISASTER. They claimed it would be easier but it's just created more problems!!!! Why launch a system if corrections aren't even available?!?!? Makes NO SENSE.

•I feel your frustration! Had similar issues but with the legal guardianship question. It's like they didn't even test the system before launching it.

Financial aid advisor here. The Department of Education officially announced that the correction period for the 2025-2026 FAFSA will begin in the first week of April. For dependency override issues like the one you're describing, there are two immediate actions you should take: 1. Have your daughter contact her school's financial aid office immediately and request a "Dependency Status Review Form" - most institutions have this form ready for exactly these situations. 2. Document the error by taking screenshots of the problematic section in her Student Aid Index (SAI) report that shows the incorrect homeless status. The good news is that schools are very aware of these issues this cycle and have been instructed by the Department of Education to use professional judgment for clear errors like this. Your daughter will not lose eligibility due to this mistake.

•This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I'll make sure she takes screenshots today. Is there anything specific I should do as the parent since I can't be added as a contributor yet? Should I fill out any forms?

•Great question. Yes, as the parent you should prepare your financial information as if you were completing the contributor section. The school will likely provide a paper form for you to complete with the same information that would have been requested online. Have the following ready: 1. Your 2023 tax return information (AGI, taxes paid, etc.) 2. Current asset information (bank accounts, investments, etc.) 3. Your FSA ID information, as you'll need this once corrections open Some schools may also ask for a signed statement from you confirming that your student is a dependent on your taxes.

Try using Claimyr to get through to an actual FAFSA representative. I was in the same boat with my son (wrong answer on the legal guardianship question) and couldn't get through to anyone for days. Used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to a FSA agent in about 10 minutes. The agent put a note on my son's file about the error so the schools could see it while we wait for the correction period. There's a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ

•Yes, it worked for me. The agent I spoke with said they're completely overwhelmed with calls right now, especially about dependency issues and contributor problems. Having the note on my son's file helped the school process his aid while we wait for corrections to open.

I work in our university's financial aid office, and we're seeing this issue frequently this cycle. While waiting for the correction period to open, here's what you should do: 1) Have your student contact her school's financial aid office ASAP 2) Ask specifically for a "Dependency Status Correction Form" or "Special Circumstances Form" 3) The school can make manual adjustments on their end for aid packaging purposes Most institutions are making accommodations for these known FAFSA glitches. The good news is that while this is frustrating, it won't ultimately impact her aid eligibility as long as you're proactive about documenting the error now. Also important: Once the correction period opens (early April according to our latest guidance), make that correction immediately as it will need to be processed before the final aid package is created.

•Can the school ACTUALLY fix this though? Because my daughter's school said they could "note it" but couldn't actually change anything in the system. Its all so confusing!!!!
