FAFSA correction window - when can we finally fix 2024-2025 application errors?
I'm totally confused about when we can start making corrections to the 2024-2025 FAFSA form. My daughter's application has her social security number transposed (completely my fault!!!) and I've been trying to fix it for weeks. The FSA website just says corrections will be 'available soon' but gives no actual date. Her college financial aid deadline is April 1st and I'm starting to panic. Has anyone been able to make corrections yet or know when the correction window officially opens? I've tried calling FSA but can't get through to a real person after waiting 2+ hours!

The Department of Education announced that the FAFSA correction functionality should be available by 'mid-March' according to their latest update. They haven't given a specific date, but most financial aid offices are expecting it to be available around March 15-18. Your daughter's college should be aware of these delays and may offer extensions on their internal deadline given the nationwide FAFSA issues this year.

•Thank you! Mid-March is at least something I can plan around. Should I contact her college financial aid office now to let them know about this situation or wait until the correction window actually opens?

I was on a webinar with our school counselor last week and she said corrections should open 'any day now' but that was what they were saying back in February too! 🤬 This whole FAFSA redesign has been a DISASTER. My daughter's college needs her SAI score by April 15 for scholarship consideration and we're cutting it SO CLOSE. Absolutely ridiculous they launched this system without basic correction functionality!!!

•Right?? Like how do you launch a financial aid system without a way to fix mistakes? My cousin works in the financial aid office at State College and she said they're giving everyone extensions because of this mess.

I spent 3 days trying to reach someone at Federal Student Aid to ask this exact question. Finally got through using Claimyr (claimyr.com) which got me past the wait queues. The agent told me correction capability should be available by March 20th, but they're still finalizing the update. She recommended checking the FSA site daily as they won't be sending notifications when the feature goes live. You can watch their demo at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ - saved me hours of hold time frustration.

•Thank you! I haven't heard of Claimyr before but after wasting half my day on hold yesterday I'm desperate. I'll check it out. Did they say if we'll be able to make all types of corrections or just certain things? I really need to fix that SSN.

•They said all standard corrections should be available, including SSN fixes, but some special circumstances may still require contacting your school's financial aid office directly. The agent was pretty clear that SSN corrections would be part of the first wave of enabled fixes.

Financial aid advisor here - the correction window for the 2024-2025 FAFSA is expected to open by March 20th according to the latest guidance we've received from the Department of Education. However, for SSN corrections specifically, you have two options: 1. Wait for the correction window to open (safest option) 2. Contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center directly at 1-800-433-3243 - some SSN corrections have been processed manually in urgent cases I strongly recommend contacting your daughter's college financial aid office ASAP. Most institutions are extending internal deadlines due to the FAFSA delays and many have set up alternative processes for students with these issues. They may be able to hold her place for consideration while the correction is processed.

My daughter had her SSN wrong on her FAFSA too and we went to the financial aid office in person at her school. They said not to worry about the April 1 deadline because NO ONE can make corrections yet lol. This FAFSA rollout is wild. They said they'll accept corrections all the way till May 1st this year because of all the problems.

Just got an update! The Department of Education just announced the correction window will officially open on March 18th. Here's what you'll be able to fix: - Student/parent personal information (including SSN corrections) - Income/tax information - Household size adjustments - College selection changes The one thing they won't allow immediate corrections for is dependency status changes - those will require working directly with your college financial aid office.

•This is such a relief!! Thank you for sharing this update. March 18th isn't too far away at least. I'll make sure I'm ready to make the correction first thing that day.

I swear the Department of Education is run by CLOWNS. How do you launch a completely redesigned FAFSA system in JANUARY without basic correction functionality until MARCH?! Students are losing scholarships and housing placements because of these delays! My daughter might have to live off-campus now because on-campus housing priority required financial aid verification by March 1st. Completely UNACCEPTABLE!

•Most university housing offices are making accommodations for these FAFSA delays. Have your daughter contact housing directly and explain the situation - many are extending priority housing deadlines specifically because of the nationwide FAFSA issues.

UPDATE: I just talked to my daughter's financial aid office and they've been amazing! They're fully aware of the correction delay and are extending their deadline to May 1st. They also said they can process her application with the incorrect SSN for now and update it once we make the correction. Just sharing in case anyone else is in a similar situation - definitely contact your school directly!
