FAFSA 2024-25 glitch: Daughter signed student section 5+ times but application not showing up on my portal
I'm about to lose my mind with this FAFSA portal. My daughter has electronically signed her portion of the 2024-25 FAFSA application at least FIVE separate times over the past week, but when I log into my FSA ID account, I still don't see any pending 2024-25 application that needs my contribution section completed. Last year's application shows as 'completed' but nothing for this year. I've refreshed, cleared cache, tried different browsers, everything. The system keeps sending her confirmation emails that she's completed her part, but it's like the application just vanishes into thin air. Has anyone else experienced this disconnect between student and parent portals? Any solutions? Her college priority deadline is coming up in 3 weeks and I'm starting to panic!

same thing happend to me!! my son signed like 4 times and nothing showed up for me. turns out he was using his school email for himself but put MY email as the parent email on the application. so the system was confused bcuz the emails didnt match what was in our FSA ID profiles? check if she's entering emails correctly

•Thanks for the tip! I just checked with her and she says she definitely used her personal email that matches her FSA ID. I'm wondering if it's because I have two daughters in college and maybe the system is confused about which student's FAFSA I should be seeing? This is driving me crazy.

•I've been trying to call them for the past two days. Either I get disconnected after 45+ minutes on hold or it says 'call volume too high' and just hangs up on me automatically. Did you have a special number or time of day that worked better?

This is actually a known issue with the redesigned 2024-25 FAFSA system. There are two possible solutions I can recommend: 1. First, make sure both you and your daughter have the most updated version of your FSA IDs. The new FAFSA requires both accounts to be fully updated with matching information. 2. Second, there's a linking problem between student and contributor sections. Have your daughter log in again, go to the 'Contributors' section, and remove you as a contributor, then add you again with your exact legal name, SSN, and email as it appears on your FSA ID. She'll need to re-save the entire application after doing this. If neither works, there's also a manual override process: have your daughter print and send you a copy of her confirmation page, which contains a unique application ID. You can then log in separately, click "Continue FAFSA Application" and manually enter that ID to access the contributor portion.

•Thank you so much for these detailed steps! We'll try these tonight. I didn't realize there was a manual override option - that might be exactly what we need. Do you know if colleges can see that we've been trying to submit this whole time? I'm worried about missing priority deadlines because of technical glitches.

I went through the EXACT same thing with my son's application. Turned out the problem was on my end - I had created a new FSA ID last year but was trying to log in with my old one this year. So frustrating! Have you verified that you're using the correct FSA ID? Also, sometimes it takes 1-2 business days for the student portion to actually appear in your portal, even after they sign. The system is MUCH slower this year with all the changes.

•That's a good point about the FSA ID... I'm pretty sure I'm using the right one (I only have one that I know of), but maybe something got reset when they updated the system. I'll double-check all my login credentials. It's been over a week since her first signature though, so I feel like it should have appeared by now if it was just a delay issue.

After helping several families with this exact issue, I can tell you it's definitely a system-wide problem with the 2024-25 FAFSA. The contributor invitation system is malfunctioning for many users. The most reliable fix I've found is having your daughter go back into her application and verify that your email address is entered EXACTLY as it appears in your FSA ID profile - even a slight difference like using a capital letter where there wasn't one before can break the connection. Also, make sure she completes ALL sections of her portion before signing - if any section is incomplete, the contributor invites often don't process correctly.

•Thank you! I'll have her double-check that everything in her section is 100% complete. I hadn't considered that an incomplete section might be blocking the contributor invitation. We'll go through it with a fine-tooth comb tonight. Really appreciate the expert advice!

After 3 weeks of dealing with this exact problem, I finally got through to someone at Federal Student Aid who fixed it for us in 5 minutes. Used Claimyr to skip the hold times (claimyr.com) - they got me a callback in about 15 minutes when I had been waiting on hold for HOURS before. There's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. The agent said it was a database synchronization problem on their end that they had to manually fix. Nothing we could have done on our own would have resolved it.

•does that actually work? ive never heard of it before

•Yeah, it does. I was skeptical too, but after trying for days to get through the regular way, it was worth it. The agent told me they're seeing tons of these parent-student linking issues with the new system.

Ughhh the new FAFSA system is HORRIBLE! This is my third kid going through college and I've NEVER had so many problems. Their "simpler" system has more glitches than a beta video game. My daughter and I finally fixed this same issue by completely deleting her application and starting over from scratch. Not ideal but it finally worked. The second time around, we made sure to do it all in one sitting - she did her part, then immediately I did mine before logging out. The system seems to break when there's a delay between student and parent portions.

•Starting over is something we haven't tried yet! I was hoping to avoid that since she spent so much time on her section, but at this point I'm willing to try anything. Did your colleges still count it as meeting the priority deadline when you had to restart due to these technical issues?

•Yes, they did! I actually called the financial aid offices at her schools directly and explained the technical issues. They were very understanding and noted in her file that we had been trying to submit before the deadline. They're seeing this happen with lots of families.

make sure she actualy SUBMITTED not just saved!!! my daughter kept saying she finished but she only saved her part not submitted. big diference!!!

•She's been getting confirmation emails that specifically state she's completed/signed her portion, so I think it's definitely submitted and not just saved. But I'll check with her about exactly what buttons she pushed just to be 100% sure. Thanks!

I recommend checking if you both completed the identity verification steps properly. The new SAI system requires both contributors and students to verify their identity through the IRS connection before the application fully processes. Check if there's a pending identity verification step showing in either of your FSA ID portals. This isn't obvious in the interface and many families miss it.

•That's interesting - I didn't know about the IRS verification being required before the application processes. I'll have both of us check our portals for any pending verification steps. Thank you for the detailed advice!

Update: we finally got this resolved! For anyone else facing this issue, the agent told us that when a student submits their portion, if they click the browser back button or navigate away before the final confirmation page fully loads, it can create a "phantom application" that shows as signed for the student but never properly links to the parent. The fix was having my student log back in, click on "View Submitted Applications," find her submitted FAFSA, then click "Make Correction" and go back through each section (not changing anything) until she reached the signing page again. After re-signing, the application finally appeared in my portal.

•Thank you so much for sharing your solution! We're going to try this approach tonight. It makes sense that there might be a submission error if she navigated away too quickly. I'll update if this works for us too!

This is such a frustrating but common issue with the new FAFSA system! I work in college financial aid and we've been seeing this exact problem constantly. Here's what I've found works best: First, have your daughter log into her FSA ID and go to "My Activity" to see if there's a completed 2024-25 FAFSA listed there. If yes, she should click on it and look for a "Share with Contributors" button or link - sometimes this step gets skipped in the process. If that option isn't available, try having her go to the "Make a Correction" option and simply re-submit without changing anything. This often triggers the contributor invitation to properly send. Also, double-check that your FSA ID email matches EXACTLY what she entered as your email on the application - even spacing or capitalization differences can break the link. The system is definitely buggy this year, but most families can get it working with these steps!
