FAFSA stuck after contributor invite - can't access parent section but shows in progress
I'm so frustrated with this new FAFSA system! My daughter sent me the contributor invitation, I got the email and accepted it, but now I'm completely stuck. When I log in to my FSA ID account, I can see her application listed as 'in progress' but there's literally no way for me to access the parent contribution section. I've clicked everything possible on the dashboard! It's like the system knows I'm supposed to fill something out but doesn't give me any way to actually do it. Has this happened to anyone else? The deadline for her school's priority financial aid is coming up in 3 weeks and I'm getting really anxious about this. I've tried logging out and back in multiple times but nothing changes.

This is a common issue with the new FAFSA. After accepting the contributor invitation, you need to wait about 24 hours for the system to fully process the connection. Then you should see a specific button or link labeled 'Complete Contributor Information' when you log in to your studentaid.gov account. Make sure you're logging in with YOUR FSA ID, not your daughter's. Also, check if you're looking at the 2025-2026 FAFSA and not accidentally viewing a previous year's application.

•Thanks for responding! I actually accepted the invitation 4 days ago, so it's definitely been more than 24 hours. I'm definitely logging in with my own FSA ID (I created a new one just for this) and I can see her name and that it's the 2025-26 application. But there's no button anywhere to complete my section! It just shows her name and 'In Progress' next to it.

I had the EXACT same problem last month!! The system is completely broken. I finally got it fixed by calling FSA directly, but I was on hold for over 2 HOURS before talking to someone!!! The agent said there was a glitch where the system wasn't properly linking contributor accounts even though the invitation was accepted. They had to manually reset something on their end to get it working. So frustrating!

•Oh no, 2 hours on hold sounds awful! Did they at least fix it for you right away once you got through? I've already tried calling twice but gave up after 45 minutes on hold each time.

•Yes they fixed it right away once I FINALLY got through to a human. But seriously the hold time was ridiculous. I kept getting disconnected too the first couple times I tried.

I know this is frustrating! Have you tried using a different browser? Sometimes the FAFSA site has weird compatibility issues. Also make sure you don't have any pop-up blockers enabled, as the contributor section sometimes opens in a new window that might get blocked.

•I tried both Chrome and Edge already, same issue on both. And I checked my pop-up settings too - nothing blocked. It's like the system just doesn't recognize that I need to fill out anything even though it shows her application as in progress. So strange!

Another thing to check - go to the Messages section in your studentaid.gov account. Sometimes the actual link to complete your section is buried in there rather than on the main dashboard. Also, your daughter might need to log in on her end and check if there's something she needs to do to fully activate your contributor access. The system sometimes requires actions from both sides before it works properly.

•Good suggestion about the Messages section - I just checked and there's nothing there except the original invitation confirmation. I'll ask my daughter to check her end tonight when she gets home from work. This whole process is so much more complicated than when we did FAFSA for her older brother 2 years ago!

•Oh no, that's what I'm afraid of! Did you lose all the information your son had already entered when you had to start over?

After dealing with similar FAFSA connection issues last month, I discovered a service called Claimyr that helped me reach an actual FSA agent without the insane hold times. It basically holds your place in line and calls you back when an agent is available. Saved me so much frustration! Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. The FSA agent I spoke with was able to fix the contributor linking problem in about 5 minutes once I actually got through to them.

•THIS!! I wish I'd known about this before spending half my day on hold. Will definitely use this next time I have FAFSA issues (which knowing the system will probably be soon lol).

•Thank you so much for this suggestion! I'll check it out right now. At this point I'll try anything to get this fixed before the priority deadline.

have u tried just using her login and filling it out yourself? thats what i did with my kid. he gave me his login and i just did the whole thing myself way easier than this contributor nonsense.

•This is actually not recommended practice. Students and parents should use their own FSA IDs to complete their respective sections. Using someone else's FSA ID violates the terms of service and can potentially create legal issues since you're electronically signing federal documents with someone else's identity.

Update: I used the Claimyr service that was suggested and got through to an FSA agent in about 30 minutes (instead of waiting on hold for hours). The agent said there was indeed a glitch with my contributor access. They had to unlink my account from my daughter's application and then have her send a new invitation. After that, it worked properly! Just wanted to update in case anyone else runs into this issue. Thanks everyone for the help!

•That's great news! Glad you got it resolved before the deadline. This will be helpful information for others facing the same problem.

For anyone else reading this thread with similar issues, here's what's happening technically: The new FAFSA system uses a different authentication system for linking contributor accounts than previous years. When the linking process breaks, it creates an orphaned permission in the database that shows up as 'in progress' but doesn't actually provide access. Only an FSA agent can fix this on the backend. This is why starting a new application sometimes works - it creates fresh database entries without the corrupted permissions.

•This is such a helpful explanation! I've been having similar issues with my stepson's FAFSA and contributor access for his mother (we're divorced). I'm going to try the unlinking approach you mentioned.

I'm so glad you got this resolved! I'm dealing with a similar contributor access issue right now where my parent accepted the invitation but can't see any way to complete their section. Based on your experience and what others have shared here, it sounds like calling FSA directly (possibly using that Claimyr service to avoid the long hold times) is really the only reliable solution when the system glitches like this. It's frustrating that such a critical system for college funding has these technical issues, especially with financial aid deadlines looming. Thanks for updating the thread with your solution - this will definitely help other families who run into the same problem!

•I'm dealing with this exact same issue right now! My parent accepted the invitation almost a week ago but still can't access their section. It's such a relief to see that others have found solutions. I was starting to panic thinking we'd miss our school's priority deadline. I'm definitely going to try the Claimyr service that @Ryder Greene mentioned - anything to avoid those horrible hold times with FSA. It s'really frustrating that such an important system for college funding has these kinds of glitches, but at least there seems to be a way to get it fixed. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences!
