FAFSA 2023-2024: Can't add schools because option is greyed out - urgent help needed!

I'm totally stuck with my FAFSA for 2023-2024! I submitted my application last month but now I need to add 3 more schools I'm applying to. When I log in and go to the "Add School Codes" section, the option is completely greyed out and I can't click it. I tried logging out and back in, using different browsers, even my phone, but nothing works! My college application deadlines are coming up in 2 weeks and I'm freaking out that these schools won't get my financial aid info in time. Has anyone else run into this problem? Is there some time limit for adding schools that I didn't know about? Any help would be SO appreciated!

same thing happened to me!! the whole fafsa website is glitchy af this year. i couldnt add schools either but then it randomly started working after a week? maybe just wait???

A WEEK?? I don't have that kind of time with these deadlines coming up. Did you do anything specific that might have fixed it?

The greyed out add school option usually happens because your FAFSA is still being processed. Once your Student Aid Index (SAI) calculation is complete, you should be able to add more schools. Check your FAFSA status - does it show as "Processed" or still "Processing"?

0 coins

It says "Processing" still... but it's been almost 3 weeks! Is that normal? The status bar shows it's about 75% complete.

That's definitely longer than usual. Processing typically takes 3-5 days, though there have been delays this year with the FAFSA changes. You might need to contact FSA directly to see what's holding up your application.

Are you SURE you're looking at the right place?? The add schools option isn't under "Add School Codes" anymore for 2023-2024. They moved it to "Make FAFSA Corrections" and then you have to select the school selection section specifically. The UI is completely different from last year and super confusing. I spent like 2 hours trying to figure it out last month!!!!

Omg I'll check that right now! I was definitely looking under "Add School Codes" because that's what all the instructions online said to do. Why would they change it and not update their own instructions? So frustrating!

0 coins

Let me know if that works!! And yeah the whole system is a mess this year. They changed everything but didn't update half their help docs 🤦‍♀️

Just tried it and the entire Make FAFSA Corrections section is also greyed out. So looks like that's not it either. 😢

Did your parents already sign the FAFSA too? If they haven't completed their signature part, a lot of the edit options stay greyed out. My son couldn't add schools until I completed my part as a parent contributor last year.

Yes, my mom signed it digitally the same day I submitted it. We got confirmation emails for both signatures. I'm going to check with her again though just to be sure nothing weird happened.

This is a common issue this year due to the FAFSA system overhaul. There are three likely reasons your add schools option is greyed out: 1) Your application is still processing (as mentioned above) 2) You've reached the 20-school limit (though you didn't mention how many schools you already listed) 3) There's a verification hold on your application For the third option, check your Student Aid Report (SAR) for any verification flags. If you see a "V" code or any mention of verification, you'll need to complete that process before making changes. The fastest solution is calling Federal Student Aid directly at 1-800-4FED-AID. Unfortunately, wait times are often 2+ hours this time of year, especially with all the new FAFSA issues.

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation! I only added 7 schools initially, so definitely not at the limit. I just checked my SAR and there's no verification flag that I can see. Looks like I need to call them, but those wait times sound terrible with my deadlines so close...

I work in a financial aid office and we're seeing this issue constantly this year. If your FAFSA is still processing after 3 weeks, something is definitely holding it up. Most likely there's a data matching issue with your SSN, name, or birth date compared to Social Security records or IRS tax information. I'd recommend trying Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an FSA agent quickly. They help you skip the long hold times when calling Federal Student Aid. One of our students showed me a video of how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ Once you get through to FSA, specifically ask if there are any identity matching issues or processing holds on your application. They can often resolve these immediately during the call.

Thank you so much for the insider info! I'll definitely look into Claimyr because I'm desperate at this point. Do they actually manage to get through faster? And do you know if FSA can add the schools for me directly during the call or will I still need to wait for processing to complete?

0 coins

Yes, FSA agents can actually add schools for you during the call in many cases. Make sure you have your FSA ID, the school codes you want to add, and your DRN number (it's on your SAR) ready when you call. And definitely ask them to explain exactly why your application is stuck in processing so long, because that's not normal even with this year's delays.

The whole FAFSA system is BROKEN this year!! They rushed out all these "improvements" and created a complete disaster. I work with low-income students applying to college and HALF of them have issues with the 2023-2024 FAFSA that weren't problems in previous years. We've seen the greyed out schools issue dozens of times. Sometimes it's processing delays, sometimes it's system glitches, sometimes it's verification issues. But the WORST part is you can't get anyone on the phone at FSA to help!!! 😡 I recommend you also contact the financial aid offices at the schools you're applying to and explain the situation. Many schools are being flexible with FAFSA deadlines this year because they know the system is a nightmare.

That's a good idea about contacting the schools directly. I'll email all three financial aid offices today to explain what's happening. I'm glad to hear they might be flexible with deadlines - that takes some pressure off while I try to fix this!

UPDATE: I used Claimyr to get through to FSA and only waited about 5 minutes! The agent was super helpful and found the issue right away. Turns out there was a mismatch between my name in the Social Security database (which includes my middle name) and how I entered it on the FAFSA (without my middle name). She fixed it during the call AND added all three schools for me! She said the application should finish processing within 3-5 business days and all 10 schools will receive my info. Such a relief! Thanks everyone for your help!!

Great news! This is exactly why calling is so important for these issues - most FAFSA problems can be fixed quickly once you actually reach someone. And that name mismatch issue is extremely common but impossible to fix without speaking to an agent. Glad you got it resolved in time for your deadlines!

Thanks for updating! I'm going to share this solution with my students who are having similar issues. The name mismatch thing is such a simple fix but so many students get stuck on it for weeks not knowing why.

So glad you got this resolved! I'm a freshman who went through the same nightmare last year with the new FAFSA system. The name mismatch issue is SO common but they never explain it clearly anywhere. For anyone else reading this - definitely check that your name on FAFSA matches EXACTLY what's in the Social Security database, including middle names, hyphens, apostrophes, etc. Even tiny differences can cause weeks of processing delays. And yes, Claimyr is a lifesaver for getting through to FSA quickly! Saved me from missing my aid deadlines too.

This is such valuable advice! I'm a high school senior just starting my FAFSA and had no idea about the name matching requirement. I definitely would have entered my name differently than what's on my Social Security card. Thank you for sharing this - hopefully it saves other students from going through the same stress Isabella did! I'm bookmarking Claimyr too just in case I run into issues.

This thread is so helpful! I'm a junior just starting to research financial aid and had no clue about any of these potential FAFSA issues. Reading through everyone's experiences is eye-opening - especially the name matching problem that seems to trip up so many students. I'm definitely going to make sure I enter my name exactly as it appears on my Social Security card when I apply next year. And I'm saving the Claimyr recommendation too since it sounds like getting through to FSA support is nearly impossible otherwise. Thanks Isabella for sharing your solution and everyone else for the detailed advice!

This whole thread has been incredibly educational! As someone new to the FAFSA process, I had no idea there were so many potential pitfalls. The name matching issue seems like such a small detail but can cause weeks of delays - definitely something they should make more prominent in their instructions. It's also concerning how many system issues there seem to be with the 2023-2024 FAFSA overhaul. I'm grateful for communities like this where people share real solutions like the Claimyr service. Isabella's experience shows how important it is to be persistent and seek help when things aren't working. I'll definitely be extra careful with my application details when my time comes!

Wow, this entire thread is exactly what I needed to see! I'm a senior dealing with a similar FAFSA nightmare right now - my application has been stuck in "processing" for over 2 weeks and I can't figure out why. After reading through everyone's experiences, I'm pretty sure it might be a name matching issue too since I used a shortened version of my legal name. The fact that Isabella got it resolved so quickly with Claimyr gives me hope! I'm definitely calling FSA tomorrow using that service. It's honestly ridiculous that the FAFSA system is this broken, but at least this community is sharing actual solutions. Thank you all for being so detailed about the troubleshooting steps - this is way more helpful than any official FAFSA help page I've found!

Paolo, I hope the Claimyr service works as well for you as it did for Isabella! The name matching thing is so frustrating because it seems like such a minor detail but can completely derail your whole application. Make sure you have all your documents ready when you call - your FSA ID, Social Security card to verify the exact name spelling, and your DRN number from any emails you've received. It's crazy that we have to use third-party services just to reach the people who are supposed to help us with federal aid, but at least there are solutions out there. Keep us posted on how it goes - your experience could help other students in the same situation!
