Does FAFSA SAI score appear immediately after submission or is there a wait period?
I just submitted my FAFSA application for 2025-2026 last night and signed it electronically. I was expecting to see my SAI (Student Aid Index) score right away, but when I logged back in this morning, it's still not showing up. The website just says "processing" with no timeline. Is this normal? Do SAI scores typically show up instantly after submission or is there some kind of waiting period? I'm getting anxious because several scholarship applications I'm working on need this information by next Friday.

•Thanks! That's a relief to hear. I kept thinking I did something wrong or missed a step when I didn't see it immediately.

Your SAI (Student Aid Index) typically takes 3-7 business days to appear after submitting your FAFSA. The Department of Education needs to process your application, which includes verifying your identity through the Social Security Administration and checking other data elements. If you submitted on a weekend, it might take a bit longer for processing to begin. For the 2025-2026 FAFSA specifically, processing times have been somewhat longer than previous years due to the new system changes.

•Is it also normal for it to take longer if you have more complicated financial situations? My parents are divorced and I included both their information, and mine took almost 2 weeks to process!

I WAITED THREE WEEKS for my SAI to show up and then when it finally processed, I got flagged for verification!!! So frustrating!! And then I couldn't get through to anyone on the phone for another week. The whole system is a NIGHTMARE. Just be prepared that even after you get your SAI, you might have more hoops to jump through. 😡

•Oh no, that sounds horrible! Did you ever get through to anyone? I'm worried because I really can't afford any delays with these scholarship deadlines coming up.

After struggling to get through to FSA for two weeks about my verification issue, I finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual person at Federal Student Aid in less than 20 minutes. They basically hold your place in the phone queue and call you when an agent is about to answer. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ I was skeptical at first but it saved me from spending another day on hold. If you're in a rush with those scholarship deadlines, it might be worth looking into if you need to talk to someone about speeding up your processing.

•Thanks for the tip! I'll wait a few more days first, but if it doesn't process by Monday I might need this. Those scholarship deadlines aren't flexible unfortunately.

The standard processing time for the 2025-2026 FAFSA is 3-5 business days for initial processing, though it can sometimes take up to 10 days during peak periods. After initial processing, you should see your SAI score in your studentaid.gov account under "My Aid." A few important things to know: 1. If you just submitted yesterday, you're still well within the normal processing window 2. For scholarship deadlines, many schools and organizations will accept your confirmation number as proof of FAFSA submission if your SAI isn't available yet 3. You can contact the scholarship providers and explain the situation - most have procedures for handling FAFSA processing delays 4. If you need your SAI urgently, you can request expedited processing by calling Federal Student Aid at 1-800-433-3243, but be prepared for significant wait times If you don't see your SAI by the 7-business-day mark, that would be the time to follow up more aggressively.

•My daughter applied for FASFA last year and we never got a SAI, just the EFC number. Is that the same thing??

Update: My SAI finally appeared today - took exactly 4 business days. For anyone else wondering about timing, the system didn't send me any notification; I just kept checking my account and it was there this morning. Thanks everyone for the help and reassurance!

•Glad you got your number! Now begins the REAL fun of trying to figure out what kind of financial aid package you'll actually get. The whole system is so stressful!!!

Great to hear your SAI came through! Four business days is pretty typical from what I've seen. For others still waiting, I'd recommend checking your account every morning rather than multiple times per day - the processing seems to happen overnight and you'll just stress yourself out refreshing constantly. Also make sure to screenshot your SAI once it appears, since you'll need that number for multiple applications and it's easier than logging in every time.

•That's really smart advice about screenshotting the SAI! I'm new to all this FAFSA stuff and didn't even think about needing that number for multiple applications. Also good to know about checking once a day instead of obsessively refreshing - I can already tell I'm going to be tempted to do that when I submit mine next week!
