Do parents need to re-sign FAFSA after adding schools? No email confirmation received

My son just added another college to his FAFSA application yesterday, and the system made him re-enter his bank information even though we didn't make any other changes. Now I'm confused about whether I need to sign it again as the parent contributor. I haven't received any email notification about needing to sign again, but I'm worried his application will be delayed if I missed something. Has anyone else added schools after submission? Do parents have to re-sign after every change? The SAI calculation was already completed for his original schools, so I'm hoping we don't need to restart the whole process.

yep parents have to sign again anytime the student makes changes. check your spam folder for the email. my daughter added 4 schools after initial submission and i had to sign each time lol

That's so frustrating! I checked my spam folder and still don't see anything. How long did it take for you to get the email notification? Should I just log into my studentaid.gov account and check there instead of waiting for an email?

According to the Federal Student Aid guidelines, parent contributors do need to re-sign the FAFSA after any changes are made, including adding schools. While the system should automatically send an email notification, there are cases where these notifications get filtered or delayed. I recommend logging directly into your FSA ID account on studentaid.gov and checking the "Tasks" section. You should see a pending signature request there if one is needed. If nothing appears there within 24-48 hours of your son making changes, your signature may not be required for this particular update, or there might be a processing delay in the system.

thats not totally right. there r some minor changes that dont need resigning but adding schools DEFINITELY needs parent to sign again. the emails are super unreliable tho

I HATE THE FAFSA SYSTEM SO MUCH!! The same thing happened to me with my twins. My daughter added ONE school and it made me re-sign. My son added THREE schools at different times and I only had to sign ONCE more, not three times?? The worst part is I never got ANY email notifications and his app was sitting there for 2 WEEKS waiting for my signature!!! His SAI score was delayed and we almost missed a scholarship deadline because of it. LOG IN DIRECTLY to your account. Don't wait for emails that may never come. The whole system is broken!

Oh no, that's exactly what I'm worried about! I definitely don't want to miss any deadlines. I'll log in right now to check. Did you have to do anything special to find the place to sign, or was it obvious once you logged in?

I ran into this exact issue last month! FSA's email notification system is super unreliable. When my daughter added two more colleges, I didn't get any emails, but when I logged into my own FSA account (not hers), there was a task waiting for me to complete the signature process. If you're still having trouble reaching someone at FSA to confirm whether you need to sign again, I'd recommend trying Claimyr (claimyr.com). I was on hold with FSA for almost 2 hours before I found their service. They got me connected to an actual human at FSA in about 15 minutes. You can see how it works in their video demo: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ The agent confirmed that parent signatures are required after adding schools, and helped me complete the process right over the phone.

does that service actually work? i hear such horror stories about getting thru to fafsa agents that i'm scared to even try calling them

Yes, it absolutely worked for me! I was shocked how quick it was compared to the hours I wasted trying to get through on my own. The agent I spoke with was actually super helpful and walked me through exactly where to find the signature page that wasn't showing up correctly on my account.

As a financial aid counselor, I can clarify this for you. Yes, parent contributors typically need to re-sign the FAFSA after adding schools, but there are exceptions: 1) If your son is adding schools within 3 calendar days of the original submission AND no other data was changed, a new parent signature might not be required. 2) If he only added schools but the system prompted him to re-enter bank information, that's considered a data change and will require your signature. 3) For the 2025-2026 FAFSA, the system sometimes doesn't generate parent email notifications properly. I recommend: - Log in to your FSA ID account directly - Check the "To Do" or "Tasks" section - Look under "FAFSA Signature" or "Applications" - If nothing appears within 48 hours, call FSA directly to confirm The good news is that his existing SAI calculation won't change just because new schools were added - he's just extending where that same information gets sent.

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation! I logged in and found the signature request waiting. You were right - even though we only added a school, because he had to re-enter the bank information, it triggered the need for my signature. I've completed it now, and the status shows as "Processing" again. Really appreciate everyone's help!

I understand your frustration. The SAI calculation is quite different from the old EFC formula. If your SAI seems unusually high considering your financial situation, you absolutely should pursue an appeal through the financial aid offices at each school. Each institution handles appeals differently, so contact them individually with documentation of any special circumstances not captured in the FAFSA.

I think its so crazy how everyone has different experiences with this. When my kid added schools nothing happened and we didnt have to do anything more? But then my niece added schools and her mom had to resign. Makes no sense.

UPDATE: I followed the advice here and logged into my FSA account. Sure enough, there was a signature request waiting for me that I never got an email about! I've signed it now and my son's application is back in processing. For anyone else dealing with this issue - definitely check your FSA account directly and don't rely on email notifications. Thanks everyone for your help!

Glad you got it resolved! The system is so inconsistent with notifications. I've now made it a habit to check my FSA account weekly during application season just to be safe.

THIS is why I check the FSA site obsessively now!! Can't trust their notifications AT ALL. So glad you caught it before it caused delays!

So glad you got this sorted out! This is a perfect example of why I always tell parents to bookmark their FSA ID account and check it regularly during FAFSA season. The email notification system has been unreliable for years, but it seems especially bad with the new FAFSA format this year. Pro tip for other parents reading this: set a phone reminder to check your FSA account every few days if your student is still making changes or if you're waiting on processing. It's saved me from missing signatures multiple times. The "Tasks" section will show you exactly what needs to be done, even when emails fail to arrive.
