Will accepting part-time job with 50% pay cut affect my pending ESD redetermination?
I've been stuck in ESD redetermination limbo for 15 weeks now and I'm at my breaking point financially. Just accepted a part-time job (few hours short of full-time) with a 50% pay cut from my previous position because I literally can't wait any longer—about to lose my housing and sink into serious debt. The new job doesn't cover all my monthly expenses, but it's something. My questions: 1. How will accepting this lower-paying job affect my pending unemployment case? 2. Should I keep filing weekly claims while working part-time? 3. Can I still qualify for partial unemployment to bridge the gap until I find full-time work? 4. Or does taking ANY job mean I completely lose out when they finally process my redetermination? Really anxious about making the right decision here. Thanks for any help!

•Thanks. Yeah, it's definitely better than nothing, but still pretty stressful since it doesn't cover all my bills. I'm mostly worried that by accepting this job I might mess up my entire claim that's been pending forever.

Yes, you should absolutely continue filing your weekly claims while working part-time. Report all your hours and earnings accurately each week. ESD will calculate your partial unemployment benefit using their formula (if your weekly earnings are less than your weekly benefit amount, you may receive the difference). The key points: 1. Your redetermination will still be processed regardless of your new job 2. If approved, you could receive back payments for weeks before you started working 3. For current/future weeks, you may qualify for partial benefits if your earnings are low enough 4. You must continue to meet the three job search activities requirement each week Don't stop filing just because you got some work. That's actually one of the biggest mistakes people make with UI.

The previous response is correct - you should continue filing weekly claims and report your work and earnings. Taking part-time work doesn't automatically disqualify you from benefits. ESD uses this formula for partial benefits: If you earn less than your weekly benefit amount, they deduct 75% of your earnings from your benefit payment. So if your weekly benefit amount is $500 and you earn $300 at your part-time job, they'd deduct $225 (75% of $300) from your benefit, leaving you with a partial payment of $275. Regarding your redetermination: accepting work won't negatively impact your pending decision. In fact, it shows you're making reasonable efforts to become reemployed, which is viewed positively. I went through something similar last year when my claim was under review for 12 weeks.

•Thank you so much for explaining the formula. That makes me feel better about accepting this job while waiting. So just to confirm - I need to keep filing my weekly claims, report all my hours/earnings honestly, and still do my 3 job search activities even though I'm working part-time?

Yes, that's exactly right! Keep filing those weekly claims, report all earnings truthfully, and continue doing your 3 job search activities each week even with your part-time job. The job search requirement remains in place unless you're formally placed on standby status (which is rare in 2025). One important thing: make sure you're calculating your hours correctly. If you work 6 hours one day but also spent 1 hour in a required staff meeting, that's 7 hours to report. ESD is strict about accurate reporting.

•Got it, thank you! I'm definitely going to be careful about reporting everything accurately. I don't want to create any more issues with my claim than I already have.

I waited FOUR MONTHS for my redetermination last year and then they DENIED me after I had already taken a part-time job!!! Said I wasn't "available for full-time work" because I accepted part-time hours. Had to appeal and it was a NIGHTMARE. The whole system is designed to make you give up!!! Make sure you document EVERYTHING. Take screenshots of all your weekly claim submissions. Save every letter from ESD. Write down names and ID numbers whenever you talk to anyone. You'll need it all when they inevitably mess something up.

•That sounds awful, I'm so sorry you went through that. Did your appeal eventually work out? I'm worried about the same thing happening to me since I'm taking this part-time job out of desperation, not because it's what I really want.

Yeah, I won the appeal but it took another 6 weeks! Had to prove I was still looking for full-time work the whole time I was working part-time. Make sure you keep DETAILED records of your job search activities - save every application confirmation, email from employers, everything. The judge at my hearing was actually reasonable but the ESD people before that were useless.

Have you tried reaching ESD directly to ask about your specific situation? I had a similar issue and was stuck on hold forever until I discovered Claimyr. They got me through to an actual ESD agent in under 30 minutes! I was able to explain my situation and get clear guidance directly from ESD about my part-time work situation. Saved me weeks of uncertainty. Check out their demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 or go to claimyr.com - totally worth it for getting real answers about your redetermination.

•I've tried calling ESD at least 20 times over the past few weeks. Either get disconnected or sit on hold forever until they close for the day. I'll check out that service - at this point I'm willing to try anything to get some answers about my specific situation. Thanks for sharing.

ok but like nobody's actually answering if the redetermination will be affected? i think thats what OP is mostly worried about? like will the 15 weeks of waiting be for nothing if they take this job?????

•Good point! To clarify: The redetermination process continues regardless of whether you take new employment. If your redetermination is approved, you would be eligible for full benefits for the weeks you were completely unemployed (potentially backdated), and partial benefits for weeks you worked part-time (if your earnings were low enough). Taking this job won't invalidate your claim or the redetermination process.

One other important thing to remember: if your redetermination is approved and you're owed back benefits, make sure you file all the weekly claims for those back weeks you were eligible! ESD gives you a limited time window to go back and file those missed weekly claims once your redetermination is approved. I've seen people miss out on thousands of dollars because they didn't know they needed to file for those previous weeks once their claim was approved.

•I didn't know this! I've actually been filing every week religiously even with no payment, just in case. But this is really good information for anyone else in my situation.

my sister took a part time job and it RUINED her unemployment!!!! they said she "voluntarily took unsuitable work" and disqualified her!!! be CAREFUL what u tell them about ur new job. the whole system is a SCAM designed to deny benefits!!!

•That's an unusual situation. "Voluntarily taking unsuitable work" isn't typically grounds for disqualification. There might have been other factors involved. The standard guidance from ESD is to continue seeking work while on unemployment, and taking part-time work while continuing to search for suitable full-time employment is generally viewed positively. However, everyone's claim circumstances are different, which is why it's important to document everything and possibly speak with an ESD representative about your specific situation.

wait im confused...... do u actually have to keep doing job searches if u already have a part time job??? that seems weird

•Yes, you do need to continue with your job search activities even while working part-time, unless you've been specifically placed on standby status (which is rare nowadays). The requirement is 3 job search activities per week. The reasoning is that you're still not fully employed, so you need to be actively seeking suitable full-time work to remain eligible for partial benefits. This is a common point of confusion but very important for maintaining benefit eligibility.

Just wanted to update everyone who commented. I called ESD this morning (took forever but finally got through) and they confirmed I should: 1. Keep filing weekly claims and report all earnings accurately 2. Continue doing 3 job search activities weekly 3. The redetermination will still be processed regardless of my part-time job 4. I might get partial benefits if my earnings are low enough Basically exactly what most of you said! They also told me my redetermination should be completed "within the next 2-3 weeks" but I'm not holding my breath given how long it's already been. Thanks everyone for the helpful advice!
