Will ESD recontact my employer for a new benefit year after my previous claim just ended?

I'm confused about the re-application process and hoping someone has been through this. My previous benefit year ended November 9th (I only used 11 out of my 26 available payments). I filed to reopen/start a new benefit year yesterday and got my predetermined weekly benefit amount right away since ESD already had my wage information. My question is: Since I just reactivated my previous claim about 6 weeks ago and was approved after they contacted my employer about my job separation, will ESD have to contact my employer AGAIN about why I was let go? Or will they use the same separation information they already verified 6 weeks ago? I really don't want to wait through another 6-week adjudication process when they literally just approved me last month for the exact same job separation reason.

unfortunately they probably will have to verify again with your employer. new benefit year = new claim = new employer contact. its stupid but thats ESD for ya

Ugh that's what I was afraid of. Just seems so inefficient when they already verified everything so recently.

They will 100% have to contact your employer again. A new benefit year triggers a complete new claim process. The adjudicator won't be able to see that you were just approved for the same reason - it's a separate system. I actually work in HR and we get these repeat verification requests all the time. Super inefficient but that's how their system works.

THIS IS WHY THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!! Why would they need to verify THE EXACT SAME INFORMATION again?? Such a waste of taxpayer money and keeps people waiting for benefits they deserve. I had the same thing happen and waited 8 WEEKS for them to re-verify something they already knew!!

Sometimes you can avoid the long wait by being proactive. Call ESD directly (good luck getting through) and explain that this is the same separation they just verified. Ask if they can expedite the process or use the previous verification. Sometimes they can pull the previous adjudication notes and speed things up. If you can't get through to ESD on the phone, I've had success using Claimyr (claimyr.com). They have a system that gets you through to an actual ESD agent without waiting on hold for hours. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 that shows how it works. Totally worth it when you need to talk to someone at ESD quickly about your specific situation.

Thank you for this suggestion! I'll try calling first, but if I can't get through, I might try that service. Has anyone else used it?

This is a common misconception. When you file a new benefit year, ESD does need to verify your eligibility again, but they don't necessarily start from scratch with employer verification. Here's what actually happens: 1. If your job separation reason is exactly the same as what was previously verified and it's within a certain timeframe (usually 3 months), they can expedite the verification process. 2. They will still send the inquiry to your former employer, but the employer has a much shorter timeframe to respond (10 days instead of 30). 3. If the employer doesn't provide new information, they'll likely approve you based on the previous determination. Most important tip: When you file your new claim, make sure you provide EXACTLY the same information about your job separation as you did previously. Any discrepancies will trigger a full investigation. Also, call the claims center and specifically ask them to note in your file that this is a recently verified separation. Sometimes this helps move things along faster.

This is incredibly helpful - thank you for the detailed explanation! I did use exactly the same wording when explaining my separation reason, so hopefully that helps. I'll try calling to see if they can note that this was recently verified.

my cousin had this happen and he got approved in like 2 weeks instead of 6 the second time around. they still checked with his old work but it was faster. but my friend had to wait the full time again so i guess it depends

I actually just went through this exact situation in September! My benefit year ended and I had to file a new claim even though I'd been on an active claim right before that. They did have to contact my employer again BUT the process was much shorter. Only took about 2 weeks instead of the 6+ weeks it took the first time. The key thing is to make sure you select the exact same separation reason and use very similar language when describing what happened. Also, make sure your former employer knows to expect the inquiry and ask them to respond quickly. Good luck!

That's encouraging! I'll reach out to my former HR department to give them a heads-up. Did you have to call ESD at all during the process, or did it just move faster automatically?

I did call them once to check on status. I think that might have helped push it along, honestly. The agent could see my previous claim and made a note that this was already verified recently.

That's a common misconception. You're entitled to your full benefit amount (typically 26 weeks) during your benefit year, which is 52 weeks from when you first apply. If your benefit year ends and you haven't used all your benefits, you can apply for a new benefit year if you still meet the eligibility requirements. However, to qualify for a new benefit year, you generally need to have worked and earned wages since the beginning of your previous benefit year. This is called the "requalification requirement." The OP likely worked after their initial claim but before they reactivated it 6 weeks ago.

UPDATE: I called ESD this morning (tried for 2 hours and finally got through). The agent confirmed they DO need to contact my employer again but said she put a note on my file that this was recently verified and requested expedited processing. She said it shouldn't take the full 6 weeks but couldn't promise anything. Just wanted to share in case anyone else runs into this situation!

That's great news! The note should definitely help speed things up. Make sure you continue filing your weekly claims during this time. Did they say anything about when you might receive your first payment?

They said I probably won't get payments until the adjudication is complete, but they'll be retroactive. So I need to keep filing weekly in the meantime.
