Why does Washington ESD unemployment have a waiting week requirement?
I just filed my first unemployment claim with Washington ESD and I'm confused about this waiting week thing. My claim got approved but they're saying I have to serve a waiting week before I can get paid? This seems really unfair when I'm already struggling financially after losing my job. Can someone explain why Washington state makes people wait an extra week when they're already unemployed and need help? Is there any way around this or do I just have to deal with it?

The waiting week is basically Washington state's way of making sure people are genuinely unemployed and not just trying to game the system. It's been around forever - the idea is that it prevents people from filing claims for very short periods of unemployment. You have to serve one waiting week per benefit year, so if you file again later in the same benefit year, you won't have another waiting week.

•That makes some sense I guess, but it still feels like punishment when you're already dealing with job loss stress.

•I agree it's frustrating but at least it's only one week per benefit year, not every claim

Most states have waiting weeks, Washington isn't unique in this. The waiting week also serves as a buffer for Washington ESD to process your claim and make sure everything is in order. During that week, you still need to file your weekly claim and meet all the job search requirements, you just don't get paid for that specific week.

•So I still have to do all the work of filing weekly claims and job searching but get nothing for it? That's brutal.

•Yeah, you still have to meet all the requirements during your waiting week. Think of it as unpaid compliance rather than a break.

I was in the same boat last year and the waiting week nearly killed me financially. If you're having trouble reaching Washington ESD to ask questions about your claim during this time, I found this service called Claimyr that actually got me through to a real agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. It was a lifesaver when I couldn't get through on my own.

•Never heard of Claimyr, is it legit? I've been trying to call Washington ESD for days with no luck.

Reina Salazar
•Yeah it's totally legitimate, they just help you get through the phone queue faster. Saved me hours of redialing.

•I might try this, the Washington ESD phone system is absolutely impossible to navigate

The waiting week policy is complete BS if you ask me. They know people are desperate when they file for unemployment, making them wait an extra week is just cruel. Some states got rid of their waiting weeks during COVID but Washington kept theirs.

•I understand the frustration but there are legitimate policy reasons for the waiting week beyond just being mean to unemployed people.

•Maybe, but when you're facing eviction the 'policy reasons' don't put food on the table

One thing to remember is that your waiting week doesn't necessarily have to be your first week of unemployment. If there are any issues with your claim that cause delays, sometimes the waiting week gets served while Washington ESD is working through adjudication or other problems.

•Wait, so if my claim gets held up in adjudication, that could count as my waiting week?

•Sometimes, yes. It depends on the specific timing and what Washington ESD determines, but it can work out that way.

just bite the bullet and serve the waiting week, everyone has to do it. its not that big a deal in the long run

•Easy for you to say when you're not the one struggling with bills right now

•Some people have emergency savings, others don't. The waiting week hits different people differently.

From a policy perspective, the waiting week also helps Washington ESD manage their benefit fund. It reduces the total amount paid out slightly, which helps keep the unemployment insurance system solvent. It's not a huge amount per person, but across all claimants it adds up.

•So basically they're balancing their books on the backs of unemployed people who are already struggling?

•It's more about long-term sustainability of the program, but I understand why people see it that way.

I had to serve a waiting week when I filed in 2024 and honestly the worst part was not knowing if my claim was even going to be approved. Sitting there doing job searches and filing weekly claims for a week with no payment and no guarantee anything would work out was stressful as hell.

•Yes! That's exactly how I feel right now. The uncertainty is almost worse than the money issue.

•Hang in there, once you get through the waiting week and your first payment comes through, you'll feel much better about the whole process.

For what it's worth, some people qualify for emergency assistance programs during their waiting week. Check with your local DSHS office or community assistance programs - they might be able to help bridge the gap.

•That's a good idea, I hadn't thought about other assistance programs. Do you know if using those affects your unemployment eligibility?

Honorah King
•Emergency assistance usually doesn't affect your UI claim, but definitely ask when you apply to be sure.

Also wanted to mention that if you need to talk to Washington ESD about your waiting week or have other questions about your claim, that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier really does work. I was skeptical at first but when you're desperate to get answers, it's worth trying. Much better than redialing the regular number 50 times a day.

•How does Claimyr actually work? Do they just redial for you or is there more to it?

•They have some system that monitors the Washington ESD phone lines and calls you back when an agent is available. Check out their demo video, it explains it better than I can.

The waiting week is frustrating but at least Washington ESD is pretty good about processing claims quickly once you get past it. Some states take forever to get your first payment even after the waiting week.

Mae Bennett
•How long did it take you to get your first payment after the waiting week?

Mary Bates
•About 3-4 days after I filed my second weekly claim, so pretty reasonable timing.

Does anyone know if the waiting week applies to people on standby status too? I'm on temporary layoff and wondering if I'll have to serve a waiting week when I file my first claim.

Beatrice Marshall
•Yes, standby status claimants also have to serve the waiting week. The waiting week requirement applies to all UI claims regardless of your work status.

•Thanks, that's what I was afraid of but good to know ahead of time.

I remember reading somewhere that Washington tried to eliminate the waiting week a few years back but it didn't pass the legislature. Apparently the cost to the unemployment fund would have been too high.

•Of course they voted against helping unemployed people. Politicians don't care about regular folks struggling to pay rent.

•It was more about fiscal responsibility and keeping the unemployment insurance system stable long-term, but I understand the frustration.

Make sure you file your weekly claims on time during your waiting week! I know someone who missed filing during their waiting week and it screwed up their whole claim timeline.

Mae Bennett
•Good point, I'll make sure to stay on top of the weekly filing even though I'm not getting paid for that week.

•Yeah, treat it like any other week in terms of requirements, just don't expect a payment.

honestly the waiting week taught me to be more prepared for emergencies. now i always try to keep at least a week's expenses saved up just in case

•That's good advice for the future, but doesn't help me right now when I'm already in this situation.

For anyone still struggling with getting through to Washington ESD, I'll throw in another vote for that Claimyr thing someone mentioned. Used it last month when my claim got stuck and I needed to talk to someone. Way better than the regular phone runaround.

The waiting week is just one of those things you have to deal with when filing for unemployment in Washington. It sucks but complaining about it won't change anything. Focus on your job search and meeting the requirements so you can get paid as soon as possible after the waiting period.

Mae Bennett
•I get that I have to deal with it, but I think it's fair to question policies that make life harder for people who are already struggling.

Mason Lopez
•Exactly! Just because something is policy doesn't mean it's good policy.

•Fair enough, I just meant don't let the frustration distract from doing what you need to do to get through the process.
