Where to go to file unemployment in Washington - need help with initial claim process

Lost my job yesterday and I'm completely lost on where to go to file unemployment. I've never had to do this before and honestly have no idea where to start. Do I go to a physical office somewhere or is it all online now? I'm in Seattle if that matters. Really stressed about this whole process and could use some guidance on the first steps.

Everything is done online now through the Washington ESD website. You'll need to go to esd.wa.gov and create an account through SecureAccess Washington (SAW). The whole process takes about 30-45 minutes if you have all your documents ready.

Thank you! What documents do I need to have ready before I start?

0 coins

You'll need your Social Security card, driver's license, and employment history for the last 18 months including employer names, addresses, dates worked, and reason for separation.

just filed mine last week, the website is pretty straightforward once you get started. make sure you have your bank account info too for direct deposit

0 coins

Good point about the bank info. How long did it take for your claim to get processed?

0 coins

still waiting actually, been 5 business days and it's showing pending

The Washington ESD closed most of their physical offices during COVID and never reopened them. The online system at esd.wa.gov is your only option now. If you run into problems with the website or need to speak to someone, that's where it gets tricky because their phone lines are constantly busy.

0 coins

This is so frustrating! I've been trying to call them for three days straight and can't get through. The automated system just hangs up on you after being on hold forever.

I actually found a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to Washington ESD when I couldn't reach them myself. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling.

0 coins

Never heard of that but I'm desperate at this point. Is it legit?

Before you file, make sure you understand what information you'll need to provide about why you lost your job. Washington ESD will ask specific questions about whether you were laid off, fired, or quit. If you were fired they'll want to know the exact reason and if you quit they need to determine if it was for good cause.

0 coins

I was laid off due to company downsizing. Should be pretty straightforward then?

0 coins

Yes, layoffs are usually the simplest. Just make sure you have the exact date and any paperwork from your employer about the layoff.

0 coins

ugh the washington esd website is such a pain. crashed on me twice when I was trying to file. had to start over both times because it doesn't save your progress

0 coins

Try using a different browser or clearing your cache. Chrome seems to work better than others with the Washington ESD site.

0 coins

thanks will try that

0 coins

The system is designed to be confusing and frustrating. They don't want you to file because it costs them money. Been dealing with Washington ESD for years and it never gets easier.

0 coins

That's really discouraging to hear...

0 coins

Don't listen to that negativity. Yes the system has issues but millions of people successfully file claims every year. Just be patient and persistent.

Make sure you file as soon as possible after losing your job. There's a waiting week before benefits start but the sooner you file the sooner that clock starts ticking. Also Washington ESD has a 7-day rule where you have to file within a week of becoming unemployed or you might lose benefits for that week.

0 coins

Wait, there's a 7-day rule? I lost my job yesterday so I should be okay but that's good to know.

0 coins

Actually I think I mixed that up with another state. Washington doesn't have the 7-day rule but you should still file ASAP to avoid any delays.

0 coins

Just a heads up that after you file your initial claim you'll need to file weekly claims every week to keep getting benefits. It's another online process through the same website and you have to do it even if you haven't received your first payment yet.

0 coins

How do the weekly claims work exactly?

0 coins

You log into your account every week and answer questions about whether you worked, looked for work, were available for work, etc. Takes about 5 minutes once you get used to it.

0 coins

Don't forget you'll also need to register with WorkSource Washington for the job search requirements. It's a separate website but Washington ESD will tell you about it after you file your claim.

0 coins

Job search requirements? What do I need to do?

0 coins

You have to do at least 3 job search activities per week and keep a log of them. WorkSource has online workshops and job listings that count toward the requirement.

0 coins

been through this process twice now and honestly the hardest part is getting through to someone when you have questions. the automated phone system is a nightmare

0 coins

That's exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. They specialize in getting through to Washington ESD when you can't reach them yourself. Really worth checking out if you get stuck.

0 coins

interesting, might have to look into that if I run into issues

0 coins

Pro tip: file your claim early in the morning or late at night when the website isn't as busy. I tried filing at 2pm on a Tuesday and it was so slow it kept timing out.

0 coins

Good advice, I'll try to do it tonight when I get home from job hunting.

0 coins

Make sure you have a valid email address because Washington ESD sends all important notices electronically now. Check your spam folder regularly too because sometimes their emails end up there.

0 coins

Thanks for the reminder about checking spam. I'll make sure to watch for that.

0 coins

Filing is the easy part honestly. The real challenge comes if your claim gets flagged for adjudication. Then you're stuck waiting weeks or months for them to make a decision and good luck reaching anyone to check on the status.

0 coins

What would cause a claim to get flagged for adjudication?

0 coins

Lots of things - if there's any question about why you lost your job, if you have wages from multiple states, if there's a discrepancy in your employment dates, etc.

0 coins

This is another situation where Claimyr can be really helpful. If your claim does go into adjudication you'll want to be able to reach Washington ESD to check on status and provide any additional information they need.

0 coins

does anyone know if you can file unemployment if you were working part time? i only worked 25 hours a week at my last job

0 coins

Yes you can file for partial unemployment benefits if you were working part-time. Washington ESD will calculate your benefit amount based on your earnings history.

0 coins

ok cool thanks

0 coins

I'm still confused about the whole SecureAccess Washington thing. Do I need to create that account first before I can file for unemployment?

0 coins

Yes, SAW (SecureAccess Washington) is the login system for all Washington state services including unemployment. You create the SAW account first, then use it to access the Washington ESD unemployment filing system.

0 coins

Got it, that makes more sense now. Thanks for explaining!

0 coins

Whatever you do, don't try to file multiple claims thinking it will speed things up. That will just flag your account for fraud investigation and delay everything even more.

0 coins

Good to know, I wouldn't have thought of that but I can see how someone might try it out of desperation.

0 coins

The whole process seems so overwhelming when you're already stressed about losing your job. Take it one step at a time and don't be afraid to ask for help if you get stuck.

0 coins

Thanks for the encouragement. This thread has been super helpful, I feel much more prepared now.

0 coins

Final piece of advice - print out or screenshot everything once you submit your claim. Keep records of your confirmation numbers, any correspondence, and your weekly claim confirmations. You'll need them if there are any issues later.

0 coins

Great advice, I'll make sure to document everything. Thanks everyone for all the help!

0 coins

Good luck with your claim! The process isn't as scary as it seems once you get started.

0 coins

Just wanted to add that if you need to speak to Washington ESD about your claim and can't get through their regular phone lines, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier really does work. I was skeptical at first but they got me connected to an agent in under 10 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own.

0 coins

That's really good to know. I'll bookmark their site just in case I need it later.

0 coins

I actually tried Claimyr after seeing it mentioned here and it worked for me too. Finally got my adjudication issue resolved after weeks of trying to call myself.
