Where do I upload my ID verification documents for ESD unemployment? Just filed first weekly claim

I just submitted my first weekly claim yesterday and now I'm panicking because I saw some posts saying I needed to upload my identification documents to ESD. But I don't see any prompts or instructions about this in my eServices account! Is this something I need to do proactively or will they notify me if they need my ID? I don't want my payments to be delayed because I missed this step. Does anyone know where exactly I'm supposed to upload my driver's license and social security card? The ESD website is so confusing and I can't afford to wait weeks for benefits if I did something wrong.

Don't panic! ESD doesn't require everyone to submit ID verification upfront. They'll specifically request it if they need to verify your identity. You'll get a notification in your eServices account under 'Pending Issues' and also an alert via email if this happens. Just keep checking your account dashboard regularly. If you do get an ID verification request, you'll upload documents through the Secure Message Center in your eServices account - there will be a specific upload option that appears when they request it.

Thank you SO much! I was stressing out thinking I missed something important. I'll keep checking my account for any notifications then. Do you know roughly how long it typically takes for the first payment to come through if there aren't any issues?

they only ask for ID if the system flags ur account for some reason. i never had to send mine and got paid after my first weekly claim no problem

This isn't entirely accurate. While some claimants sail through without ID verification, ESD has been increasing identity checks since the pandemic fraud issues. Many new claimants now receive identity verification requests within the first 1-3 weeks. It's randomly selected sometimes, but also triggered by certain answers on your initial application or weekly claims.

I had this same issue back in January! Waited 3 weeks with no payment then realized they needed my ID verification. Turns out they sent the request but I missed the notification because it went to my spam folder. Double check ALL your emails including junk folder!!!

Oh no, that's good to know! I'll check my spam folder too. I'd hate to miss something important like that.

ESD system is GARBAGE!! They'll make you wait WEEKS before telling you there's a problem, then make you jump through hoops to fix it. I submitted my ID verification THREE TIMES and they kept saying they didn't receive it. Finally had to call them directly after waiting forever on hold. The whole system is designed to discourage people from collecting benefits they're entitled to!!!

If you need to reach an ESD agent directly about ID verification issues, I'd recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com). I was stuck in ID verification limbo for weeks until I used their service to get connected with an actual ESD agent who fixed everything in one call. They have a video demo that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. It saved me from potentially losing my apartment while waiting for benefits to start.

just make sure your phone # and email are correct in your account settings. thats how they send notifications if they need anything from you

I double-checked and my contact info is all up to date, so hopefully I'll get any notifications if they need something from me. This is my first time on unemployment and it's all so stressful!

To answer your question about timing - if no identity verification is required, most claimants receive their first payment within 7-10 days after submitting their first weekly claim. But if they do request ID verification, it can add 2-3 weeks to the process. Just be sure to respond immediately if they request documents. Also, make sure you're completing your three required job search activities each week and documenting them properly. That's another common reason payments get held up for new claimants.

Thank you so much for the detailed info! Yes, I've been keeping careful track of my job search activities. I applied to five jobs this week actually and saved all the information. Fingers crossed everything goes smoothly!

I went through this exact same situation last month! The waiting and uncertainty is definitely nerve-wracking. One thing that helped me was setting up text notifications in my eServices account - go to "Communication Preferences" and enable SMS alerts. That way you'll get immediate notifications if ESD needs anything from you, instead of relying only on email which can get buried or go to spam. Also, I found it helpful to log into eServices every couple days just to check the status, even if there are no new messages. The system updates pretty regularly and you'll see any new "Pending Issues" or payment status changes right away. You're doing everything right by staying on top of your weekly claims and job search activities!

This is really helpful advice! I didn't know about the SMS alerts option - I'm going to set that up right now. That would definitely give me more peace of mind knowing I'll get immediate notifications. And you're right about checking regularly, I think I'll make it part of my daily routine to log in and check for any updates. Thanks for the encouragement too - this whole process is so overwhelming when you're new to it!
