When should I apply for unemployment benefits - Washington ESD timing questions

My position got eliminated yesterday and I'm trying to figure out the right timing for filing my Washington ESD claim. I've heard conflicting advice about whether to apply immediately or wait until after my last paycheck clears. I also have some unused vacation time that HR said they'll pay out - does that affect when I should file? Really don't want to mess this up and cause delays with my claim.

File immediately! Don't wait for your final paycheck or vacation payout. Washington ESD has a one-week waiting period anyway, so the sooner you file, the sooner that week starts counting. Your benefit year begins the week you file, not when you receive your first payment.

Thanks! So even though I'm getting paid for this week still, I should file now?

0 coins

Yes, file now. You'll report that income on your weekly claim when you get to that week. Washington ESD expects you to report all earnings during your claim period.

I made the mistake of waiting two weeks after I got laid off and it delayed everything. You can't backdate claims in Washington unless you have a really good reason that Washington ESD accepts.

0 coins

What counts as a good reason for backdating? I'm in a similar situation.

0 coins

Medical emergency, military deployment, stuff like that. Being confused about when to file usually doesn't qualify.

The vacation payout shouldn't stop you from filing, but you'll need to report it properly on your weekly claims. Washington ESD considers it wages for the period it represents, not when you receive it. So if you get paid for two weeks of unused vacation, that income gets allocated across those weeks on your claims.

That's confusing - how do I know which weeks it applies to?

0 coins

Your HR department should be able to tell you which dates the vacation pay covers. If not, it's usually the weeks immediately following your last day of work.

I had this issue last year and spent forever on hold trying to get through to Washington ESD to clarify. Ended up using Claimyr.com to actually reach someone - they have this video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Way easier than the endless calling.

FILE ASAP!! I cannot stress this enough. The system is so backlogged that any delay on your part just makes things worse. I waited thinking I needed to gather more paperwork first and it was a huge mistake.

0 coins

what paperwork do you actually need to file? I keep seeing different lists online

0 coins

You need your SSN, driver's license, and employment info for the last 18 months. That's it to start. Don't wait for anything else.

0 coins

Quick question - does the one week waiting period start from when you file or from when you become unemployed?

0 coins

From when you file your claim. That's why filing immediately matters so much.

0 coins

Got it, thanks for clarifying!

I'm so stressed about this whole process. What if I make a mistake on the application? Can you go back and fix things later?

0 coins

You can contact Washington ESD to make corrections, but it's easier to be careful the first time. Take your time filling it out but don't delay starting the application.

0 coins

Thank you, that makes me feel a bit better about moving forward.

For anyone struggling to reach Washington ESD by phone about filing questions, I recently discovered Claimyr and it saved me hours of calling. They help you get through to an actual agent instead of getting the busy signal or being hung up on.

0 coins

Is that legit? I've been trying to call for days about my claim status.

0 coins

Yeah it's real, check out claimyr.com. They have a video demo that explains exactly how it works. Wish I'd known about it sooner.

does severance pay affect when you should file? my company is giving me 4 weeks severance

0 coins

File now but you'll need to report the severance payments. Depending on how it's structured, it might delay your benefits but won't hurt to have your claim established.

0 coins

ok thanks, i'll file this weekend then

The Washington ESD website is actually pretty clear about this - they say to file during your first week of unemployment. Don't overthink it.

0 coins

You're right, I was probably overcomplicating it. Just filed my claim online.

0 coins

Good for you! The waiting is the hardest part but at least you got the process started.

0 coins

I filed immediately when I got laid off in March and it was the right call. Even with some complications during adjudication, having that early file date helped speed things up overall.

0 coins

What kind of complications did you have during adjudication?

0 coins

They needed to verify my work history with a previous employer. Took about 3 weeks but would've been longer if I'd delayed filing initially.

0 coins

One thing to remember is that you need to start your job search requirement right away too. Don't wait until your benefits kick in to start looking for work.

0 coins

How many jobs do you have to apply for each week in Washington?

0 coins

It's 3 job search activities per week. Can be applications, networking, job fairs, etc. Keep good records of everything.

0 coins

And register with WorkSource Washington if you haven't already. It's required and they have good job search tools.

0 coins

From personal experience - file immediately but also be prepared for potential delays if your case needs adjudication. Mine took 5 weeks because my former employer contested it initially.

0 coins

Did you eventually get backpay for those 5 weeks?

0 coins

Yes, once it was approved I got all the backpay. That's another reason filing early matters - your benefit period starts when you file, not when you get approved.

0 coins

Just want to echo what everyone else is saying - FILE NOW. I work in HR and see people make this mistake all the time. There's no benefit to waiting and lots of potential problems.

0 coins

Thanks for the HR perspective! That's really helpful to hear from someone who sees this from the employer side.

0 coins

Happy to help! The system is designed for people to file immediately when they become unemployed, not weeks later.

0 coins

Quick tip - make sure you have all your employment dates and employer addresses ready before you start the application. It asks for detailed work history going back 18 months.

0 coins

What if you can't remember exact dates from an old job?

0 coins

Do your best estimate. You can always provide corrections later if needed. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good.

0 coins

For anyone still on the fence about timing - I delayed filing by one week because I thought I might get called back. That one week delay ended up costing me a week of benefits because my employer never did call me back.

0 coins

That's frustrating! Can't you explain the situation to Washington ESD?

0 coins

I tried but they said waiting in hopes of recall isn't sufficient reason for backdating. Lesson learned - file immediately and cancel later if you get called back.

0 coins

This is exactly the kind of situation where Claimyr helps - when you need to actually talk to someone at Washington ESD about specific circumstances. Their service got me through to an agent who could explain my options properly.

0 coins

The bottom line is there's no downside to filing immediately and several potential downsides to waiting. File now, deal with complications later if they arise.

This thread convinced me - I filed my claim this morning. Thanks everyone for the advice!

Good choice! Hope your claim processes smoothly and quickly.
