What percentage of salary do you get on Washington ESD unemployment benefits?

I'm trying to figure out my budget if I have to file for unemployment. Does anyone know what percentage of your previous salary Washington ESD pays out? I was making about $4,200 a month at my last job and I'm wondering if I should expect around 50% or if it's calculated differently. Also wondering if there's a maximum amount they'll pay regardless of what you made before.

In Washington, your weekly benefit amount is calculated based on your earnings during your base period, not just a straight percentage. The formula is roughly 3.85% of your total base period wages divided by 52 weeks, but there's also a minimum and maximum. For 2025, the maximum weekly benefit is $999 and minimum is $295. So if you were making $4,200/month, you'd probably get somewhere around $350-450 per week depending on your exact earnings history.

Thanks! So it's not just 50% of my weekly pay then. Do you know what the base period is exactly?

0 coins

The base period is typically the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you file your claim. So if you file in January 2025, it would be January-December 2024.

0 coins

i think its around 40-60% of your weekly wage but theres def a cap. when i filed last year i was making like $800/week and only got $412 weekly from washington esd

0 coins

That's about 50% which sounds reasonable. Did you have any issues getting through to them when you filed?

0 coins

oh my god yes!! i spent literally hours trying to call. the phone system would just hang up on me after being on hold forever

0 coins

The Washington ESD uses a complex formula but generally you can expect 40-50% of your average weekly wage, up to the maximum. What matters more is making sure you qualify - you need sufficient earnings in your base period and can't have been fired for misconduct. If you're having trouble reaching them by phone, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps you get through to ESD agents. They have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works.

0 coins

Interesting, never heard of Claimyr before. Is it legit? Seems weird that you'd need a service just to call unemployment.

0 coins

Yeah it's legitimate. I was skeptical too but the Washington ESD phone system is genuinely terrible - constant busy signals and disconnects. Claimyr just automates the calling process so you don't have to sit there hitting redial all day.

0 coins

DONT COUNT ON GETTING ANYWHERE NEAR 50%!!! Washington ESD will find any excuse to deny your claim or delay it for months. I applied in November and STILL waiting for my adjudication to complete. Their whole system is designed to frustrate you into giving up.

0 coins

Yikes, what's taking so long with your claim? Is there a specific issue they're investigating?

0 coins

They claim they need to verify my separation reason but my employer already submitted everything. It's just bureaucratic BS to avoid paying benefits.

0 coins

Adjudication can definitely take time, but 3+ months seems excessive. Have you tried appealing or requesting an expedited review?

0 coins

Just to add some specifics - the exact formula is your total wages in the two highest quarters of your base period, divided by 52, then multiplied by about 3.85%. But there are also alternate base period calculations if you don't qualify under the standard method. The key is having at least $3,700 in total base period wages with earnings in at least two quarters.

0 coins

This is super helpful, thank you! So if I made $50,000 last year pretty consistently, I should qualify without issues?

0 coins

Yes, with $50k annual earnings you'll definitely meet the wage requirements. Just make sure you file your weekly claims on time and meet the job search requirements.

0 coins

fyi the job search thing is no joke now. you have to log 3 job contacts per week and they actually check. my friend got disqualified for not keeping proper records

0 coins

Good to know. Is there a specific format for the job search log or can you just keep your own records?

0 coins

they have a form on the esd website but you can also use your own system as long as you have all the required info (employer name, contact method, date, etc

0 coins

Something else to consider - if you're laid off vs fired makes a big difference. Laid off due to lack of work? Usually approved quickly. Fired for performance or attendance? Expect delays and possible disqualification while they investigate. The percentage calculation is the same either way though.

0 coins

I haven't been laid off yet, just trying to plan ahead. But good point about the separation reason mattering.

0 coins

Smart to plan ahead. Also remember you can't collect unemployment if you quit without good cause, so keep that in mind if you're thinking about leaving your job.

0 coins

wait so is the $999 maximum per week or per month? that seems really low if its monthly

0 coins

That's per week, not monthly. So the maximum you could get is about $3,996 per month.

0 coins

oh ok that makes more sense lol. i was like how is anyone supposed to live on $999 a month

0 coins

One more thing about getting through to Washington ESD - if you do need to call them for any reason (claim status, adjudication questions, etc.), I really recommend checking out that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier. I used it last month when my claim got stuck and it saved me literally hours of frustration. Much better than the constant busy signals.

0 coins

might have to try that, the esd phone system is seriously broken. how much does claimyr cost?

0 coins

I don't want to get into specific pricing here, but it was definitely worth it compared to wasting entire days trying to get through on my own.

0 coins

Just remember you have to be actively looking for work and able to work. Can't collect if you're going back to school full-time or have medical issues that prevent you from working. The percentage doesn't matter if you don't qualify in the first place.

0 coins

Good point. I'm definitely able and available to work, just want to understand the financial impact if I do get laid off.

0 coins

just filed my claim yesterday and the online system estimated $467/week for me. was making about $65k annually so that works out to roughly 40% of my gross weekly pay

0 coins

That's helpful context, thanks! Did the online system give you the estimate right away or did you have to wait?

0 coins

it showed up right after i completed the application but said it was just an estimate pending review

0 coins

Don't forget about taxes!! Unemployment benefits are taxable income. You can have taxes withheld or pay quarterly estimates. Found that out the hard way come tax time.

0 coins

Oh wow, didn't think about that. So the percentage is even lower after taxes then.

0 coins

Exactly. I think they withhold 10% federal if you request it, but you might owe more depending on your tax bracket.

0 coins

this is all making me anxious about potentially losing my job. seems like such a complicated system just to get basic help when youre unemployed

0 coins

It can seem overwhelming but the basics are straightforward - file your claim, file weekly claims on time, look for work, and keep records. Most people who qualify get approved without major issues.

0 coins

thanks, that helps. just worried about doing something wrong and getting denied

0 coins

Pro tip: when you do file, make sure you have all your employment info for the last 18 months ready - employer names, addresses, dates, and reason for separation. Having everything organized speeds up the process.

0 coins

Great advice. I'll start putting that together now just in case.

0 coins

been through this process 3 times over the years (layoffs in different industries). the percentage calculation stays consistent but processing times vary a lot depending on how busy they are. during covid it was a nightmare but seems better now

0 coins

Good to know it's improved since COVID. How long did it typically take to get your first payment?

0 coins

usually 2-3 weeks if there are no issues. longer if they need to verify something with your employer

0 coins

Another option if you can't get through on the phone is using that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier. My sister used it when her claim got stuck and she said it was way better than trying to call herself.

0 coins

Seems like a few people have had success with that service. Might be worth looking into if I run into phone issues.

0 coins

to directly answer your question - you can expect roughly 40-50% of your average weekly wage up to the $999 maximum. so on $4200/month you'd probably get around $400-500/week depending on your exact wage history

0 coins

Perfect, that's exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for the clear answer!

0 coins

make sure you understand the waiting week too. theres no payment for your first week of unemployment even if you qualify

0 coins

Wait, so you don't get paid for the first week at all? Even if you're approved?

0 coins

correct, the first week is unpaid. its called the waiting week and everyone has to serve it

0 coins

Here's the official formula if anyone wants the exact calculation: Weekly Benefit Amount = (Total wages in two highest quarters ÷ 52) × 0.0385. But it can't be less than $295 or more than $999 per week for 2025.

0 coins

Thanks for the exact formula! That's really helpful for calculating ahead of time.

0 coins

Bottom line - start with expecting about 45% of your weekly gross pay and go from there. The exact amount depends on your specific wage history but thats a good ballpark for budgeting purposes.

0 coins

Perfect, 45% gives me a good starting point for planning. Really appreciate everyone's help with this!
